As for people asking what's the best job.. my answer is always "depends on what you enjoy - try out each type.. melee, mage, etc. and see which you like the best". I never try to give absolute answers because they're subjective at best.
Every job has a use - if the players take the time to think outside of the strict regimen they apply to everyone and everything in the game and dare to mix things up a bit, I'm certain other possibilities would be discovered.
Again, a big part of what limits people and brings about these impressions that X job is useless is that people look at them in the context of how they are accustom to playing the game. When you're locked into a certain routine, yes, certain things are not going to fit. That doesn't make them "useless" it simply means using them requires a different approach.
If people weren't so single-mindedly obssessed with having to always get the best xp all the time, or having the absolute best party make-up, or having the absolute best gear setup and on and on, or were willing to change things up and try different strategies, I think people would find there are quite good uses for all jobs at all levels. As someone else noted.. it also has alot to do with what you're fighting. If you're used to fighting specific mobs at a specific level range with a specific party makeup, then yes.. of course, certain changes in the party setup aren't going to work so well perhaps. However.. who's to say there aren't other mobs else where that would be ideal? But that's a whole other part of the problem... How you're "supposed to level" in a specific spot at a specific level range. That's another way the players of this game limit the game for themselves.
Of course not every job is ideal for all situations.. but every job can contribute in some way.
I can't tell you how many times I've been in a party for 30+ minutes while the leader looked for the "perfect" job to fill a spot and then we ended up disbanding because he couldn't. Meanwhile, there were a dozen other options available that would have done the job just fine. But it wasn't that "perfect" job that you're "supposed to have", so it was no good. So.. we sat there for 30+ minutes and ended up getting *no* xp... because he was obssessed with the perfect party setup to get the best xp. That example right there illustrates perfectly the problem in that mentality. People wind up limiting the game for themselves... and others.
These ideas of Dragoon sucks.. and Monk sucks, etc.. are all in the context of the routines players have reigned themselves into. I've seen Dragoons do some sick damage. I've seen Monks do some sick damage.. Who cares if one does more damage than the other? The point is.. they both can do respectable damage, can contribute to a party, and neither should be looked like a red-headed stepchild and shunned as such. Doing so is the product of the elitist mentality I mentioned earlier. The only time that matters is when people are hung-up on having to do the most possible damage at all times. To people who are content to see the mobs going down and the xp going up and everyone contributing to it, it's a negligible difference.
People need to just lighten up, forget about having to be/have/do the best at all times and just have fun for once. As it is, too many have sucked the spirit of the game right out of it and reduced it down to little more than a numbers game.

Maybe, You don't realize this yet, But some people Don't like exp parties. Its not that they don't like their job, but the way their job performs in Exp party situations. Some jobs, Like WHM, I can't stand to party more than 3 hours at a time, Because its just mindnumbling boring. So if I party for 3 hours, I enjoy it a lot more with the better exp I get.
You might not be that way, but I am. Its ridiculous to call somone an elitist because they want the best exp for their time.

I don't think it's lying at all.
