Was wondering if anyone had an idea of how they are going to do the In-game economy in this game. For instance housing, vehicles, weapons, armor, money, crafting, eye candy items, rare items, loot from mobs are a few of the traditional things in most mmorpg's. I've just been pondering ways of how they would pull off implementing these things. I mean if your a super hero it would be kind of strange looting things from aliens or villans that you could actually use. And if your a super hero what use would there be for money.
Also curious if there will be some kind of crafting system, I really cant imagine what you would want to craft. This game would be hidiously boring if all you did was kill things and level your guy up. It's all the extra's especially housing and rare items that make mmorpgs enjoyable for me.
anyone care to comment?

From what I know so far, there will not be any crafting in City of Heroes. Maybe they are going to do something like UXO, which also has no crafting. On the official site in the FAQ, there is a question about having cars in the game. The answer is that there will not be any vehicles in the initial release. This game revolves around combat. I don't really know of any heroes who craft things to give to other heroes. Just doesn't make sense to me. There are some interesting features in the reward program and also the idea of contacts in game. Head over to the official site and read up on it if you haven't already.
While I agree with your point regarding crafting, Imije, from everything I've read in the game, I don't see how it would work. For instance, there is a power in Ranged where you can have your Primary be "Assult Weapons," which you carry around with you and shoot baddies with. Then, when you get your Power increases, it adds different attacks. Therefore, since it's all about your power, not your weapon, why would anyone else need one.
This aside, as you level you're supposed to be able to "purchase" items from your Contact. Could be anything from Inspirations to "Costume Accessories" (I don't know much about these at the time, tho my guts says it is more to indivdualize your character further, plus a little stat perk).
Oh, and back to the original post, there isn't a real Economy. However, from fighting battles, you earn "Influence" which is like $$$ for NPCs. One of these things will be Team Head Quarters (although it won't be ready for the release, word is that it'll be a part of the 1st Expansion).
Nuff.

The "economy" in CoH is basically made up of 3 things. Influence is your money, you can buy costume upgrades and inspirations with it, inspirations are basically 1 shot potions, they restore health, endurance etc. and finally enhancements which as mentioned in the above post pretty much give permenant boosts like damage increase, range increase and lower endurance useage to the powers you choose to enhance.
Mobs you "kill" can "drop" inspirations and enhancements, there is no looting bodies, after you defeat an enemy if he "dropped" anything it will automatically appear in your inventory. So aside from the inspirations and enhancements there is no "loot". There are no armor or jewelry slots, you just have the costume you create. No crafting, no rare items, no eye candy items, no PvP and no player attributes to adjust (str, dex, con, etc.). There is also no player vehichles or housing in the release but some people on the CoH forums seem to think both will be added in future expansions, personally I doubt either will be.
I agree with your hidiously boring comment 100%. I've pre-ordered and will play the first free month but I really hope they add a lot more game content, because no matter how big a superhero fan I am I need more then just the mindless pointless killing of enemies to keep me interested in a game.
I actually never thought about that kind of crafting.. the inventor thing. That'd be interesting... but i doubt there'd be many people around doing it. LoL.
just my thoughts on it, though.
I think they reffered to money as influence or somethin, you need it to buy Insperations(or enhancements, one of the two i think) from contacts, & you need it to pay your hospital bills after near deaths, considering you dont actually die.
If you cant cover the billl they remove some of your experience temporarily, till you pay the debt.
You'll put it all on the line for that one moment of glory, Prepare yourself for the fight of your life!

There may be a slight economy selling power enhancements but I dont see it being a big business since there are NPCs that sell whatever you need anyway.
You'd have to collect hundreds of enhancements to have what people want to buy, but as I understand it you have no inventory and can only hold so many enhancements at a time.
I for one like this idea. Im tired of these games being about uber economies and the have and have nots. Just because someone power games doesnt mean they should have insanely better gear than the casual player.
So your saying that even though you haven't spent near as much time as the powergamer on your character, and your character development, you should still be just as "uber" as them? How do you justify that? You haven't DONE ANYTHING to make you uber. You wanna be "uber", get your @$$ out there and fight with them.
And note - I've been playing Everquest for almost 5 years now, and my highest character that I've leveled is 52. I could care less about being uber. But I'm also not thinking that I should have what they have, because I have not put in anywhere NEAR as much time as they have. I dont DESERVE what they have.
