it'd fall under motherboard drivers unless you have a sound card...  the mother board drivers are the easiest to forget/miss...  granted sound's working so it most likely isn't that.

This problem can be caused by so many things.  The obvious should be checked first.  Check to make sure the volume in windows is not muted or turned down (control panel/sounds and audio devices).  Next, make sure the mic is plugged into the correct port.   Third, check that there is no in-line volume control, mute switch or power switch that needs attention.  These are generally the main problems people encounter.

If you still can't resolve the issue, I would suggest trying a USB mic.  These usually work without fail.  If you need more help, PM me.

By the way, which software are you trying to use?

Um, my mic don't work tried everything really doesn't help us.

    1) Sound Card Make/Model

    2) Mic specs (audio jack/usb/bluetooth) and Make/Model

    3) Name of program you are trying to use. (TS, Vent, Windows Recorder)

    4) Operating system.
