Okay.
DDO sucks. Like, almost hardcore. Its a softcore blowjob, by an ugly chick with braces.
For one, the graphics and framerate sucks on everything but you. The environments are good, but the character animation sucks. It's like Morrowind, except... worse.
Okay, so apparantly every single mission is instanced. Also, there like, is no general chat. There is REAL specific area chat, but no GENERAL chat. You are almost completely isolated.
The combat sucks. Its like WoW combat, except WAY LESS DEEP. You just hit your right mouse button and swing real pretty. It's real difficult to select the bastard monsters, and they don't show up on your screen until you basically aggro them.
As far as I saw with my free trial, there is a really lame scripted beginning for you.
I could rant on forever, cuz this game is flawed, but I'll leave you with this:
This game is controlled by four main companies; Atari, Hasbro, WotC, and Turbine. Now, I'm not exactly sure if Atari has an MMO (which i doubt), but these companies honestly have NO experience, and NO idea what they are doing 
.
Leave it to the pros. Please. I don't even know if they've changed anything major with the game, either.

I played DDO when it came out and i was disgusted. I liked the combat, but everything else in my opinion was pathetic, short, and not MMOish at all.
I threw it away
Normally before playing a game its smart to check on youtube for any gameplay video's and see if there are any raw unedited ones, usually gives good input into what the game is like.
I suggest if you get dissapointed by animations you ought to look for gameplay vids before downloading.
PS: If you do this make sure you turn your volume off generally these people add music to make it look better
