Motherboard Help

Hey I'm building a new computer and i need help with the motherboard.  I was thinking about getting a 3.0 ghz p4 or athlon 3000+ (dunno which one) with like 800 FSB, but I cant figure out all the jargon with the motherboard descriptions and all.  I want to get a namebrand probably but nothing too expensive (i.e 150+ or so).  Anyone know of any good motherboard that can handle a 3 ghz processor with 800 FSB?

Thanks.

Go to this link for Intel : http://www.newegg.com/app/manufactory.asp?catalog=280&DEPA=1

This one for AMD : http://www.newegg.com/app/manufactory.asp?catalog=22&DEPA=1

Intel image AMD? It has been a long debate for years, I can't really help you decide but once you chose a side you'll probly stick to it.  A P4 3.0Ghz and a AMD 3000 w/800fsb cost darn near the same...so goodluck picking one.

Well as long as you pick a good mobo for the 3.0Ghz, your system will rock.

Let me know what mobos you are considering and I'll help with the tech lingo.

P4 3.0Ghz is on the way. Oh boy, oh boy. (^.^)

    Thanks for helpin.

I found this one that has 4 RAM slots and 2 IDE thingies.  The only one I could see with 800 FSB with 4 RAM slots, i dont really need 4 ram slots but it wouldnt hurt.

Thats a pretty good choice, ASUS is said to be one of the best board makers.  There were some others with 4 slots, but actually that particular one is a great value.

Yes I agree with choosing Asus.  I just build 2.8 P4 with this board http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-479&depa=1 and it is working very well for all my gaming needs.  Granted you may not want Raid or Firewire but for a few bucks more it may come in handy one day.

I also get a lil nervous having only 2 ram slots... but that's just me.

Other than that I think the board would do well for you.  This might confuse you but you could check out  http://www.motherboards.org/ to read some reviews

Ahh no not my board..  it has 4.  I said only having 2 would make me a lil nervous.  I could never get by with 2 slots image

The one Runesword chose only has 2.

It  does?? I thought the 4x DIMM support thing under RAM meant slots. Hmm....

Ah well who knows.  Motherboard are too confusing for me.

    Thanks.

The mobo runesoul chose has four...

Anyway, Runesoul, that board is an excellent choice, and is actually the board I was going to upgrade to this summer when i get my new processor.  If you end up going with the P4800D or the P4800D-E, either one is good.  Only difference is bells and whistles.  Don't pay extra for what you don't need, but if you need it, ASUS boards are pretty much the best.

Seems like a decent MOBO, you definetly want 4 ram slots so you can add more later and mabe get a few more months out of your system later on when upgrade time is comming up again. The chipset that comes with that board is a little slower in the memory department though then other chipsets on the market. Here is some info on the available chipsets if you wanted to check into them.http://www20.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20031215/index.html

I'd still feel better with 4 slots. You know that in the future your comp will become obsolete faster than the 4 slot ones...unless you want to upgrade your motherboard later on.

Hmm, I thought I posted a reply earlier guess it didn't come out or somethin o well.  Is the chipset on the board I selected really slow and can you get faster ones for not that much more money?

Also I have a Dell right now imageimageimageimageimage and they are evil.  Can I use any parts from it in my new comp.  I already have a big old case to use, but could i use like the fans, sound card, monitor, or hard drive?  It'd be nice if i could, but Dell is so evil i dunno.

    Thanks.

    What?! I use a Dell!!!image

Of course you could use the monitor and sound card. I've never tried but I bet the fans could be put in. I don't recommend putting in your old hard drive though lol.image

Why not?  It's a perfectly good 40 gig hard drive.  Hmm.. I will go ponder..

    Thanks.

Motherboards (mobo) one may have to wait may / june to get a modern varietty. For amd you should consider nforce3 types. But for intel there is a significant shift away from the P4s over to the prescot and tejas with a change from pga to lga775 insert for the cpu, plus the shift to ddr2 memory plus the pci express south bridge. These upcoming mobo will be a good bit beter than current types using pga slots for ~$200 P4e cpu, ddr1 memory and pci bus plus X8 agp video card (gpu.)
Add to that the sata hard drives and the eventual 64bit operating system there are just so many things to consider now adays. At least when the pcix gpu retail the $400 to $500 R9800x and FX5950 may drop $100 to $200. The pcix gpu slots in the upcoming mobo will not be backwards compatable with the X8agp, and the 5 to 6GHz tejas cpu hopefully will have worked out the problem of prescot cpu melting their mobo due to excessive current draw & heat.
You have to decide if you want to pay the extra ($400 to $1000) to have a top of line system, or get a quite a good buy settling for two or three levels below that and create a system that is quite good by today's standards and likely one can get good prices buying those components from rich users selling off their high end components to afford the newest components that nolonger are compatable.
