it doesn't really matter how many people they got subscribed, Lineage II still has a big bot problem, bigger than most other games you find. Also I agree that this game's level layout is very bad.

I've played quite a few games and I've never specifically noticed the bots on any of them. I'm not saying that they're not there. I'm just saying I've never specifically noticed any.
In Lineage 2, it was the *first* thing I noticed, and I kept on noticing them untill I gave up and stopped playing.

Lineage2 is not perfect but what game is? I am brazilian and in my country l2 is the most popular MMORPG ever, indeed bots are a big issue but i havent find any other rpg better or even equal to lineage and i have tried many .... the year of 2007 will be decisive to lineage and WOW couse of the new releases like warhammer, age of conan (wich i cant wait to get my hands on) my point is l2 with all his problems is still the best.

Without real players buying the gold and items off the bots, how would that many bots last? If anything, the high amount of bots is an indication that there are much more real players in the game. Now I don't care if you dislike players who buy gold or not, but that is the truth.
At the end of the day, Lineage 2 has been, and is a very successful MMORPG worldwide. It doesn't matter what you think about it, because no one really cares. It just takes up your time and little bits of bandwidth for this site.

If you join the new server, Franz, you will DEFINITELY see the bot problem. Try playing on one of the older servers, it seems less of a problem (still a problem) but a LOT less compared to Franz.
With 100k subscribers in North America and Europe I'd say that was pretty good numbers. Especially, like many said before, this is an asian game designed for asian gamer's playstyles. The deeper pvp turns off many american gamers who prefer milder or "regulated" pvp. I'm sure some american gamers can or do enjoy L2, but for the most part the pvp in L2 is a bit too "hardcore" for the typical american gamer.

NCsoft has recently been banning A LOT of accounts that was used by botters. They've also pwnt most of the private servers out there, so ye L2 is kind of dead atm.. But i think this'll change in a bit. Not that major of a change.. but a little

Last time I looked Lineage plus Lineage 2 had a total of 4 million active players connedcting to their servers. Some of those were free trials and second accounts, but that's still a lot of players.

The reason for the bot pandemic in L2 is that botting is extremely and i mean EXTREMELY profitable in L2.
The first thing you have to understand is the fundamental flaw of Lineage 2:
Buffs are God.
Level, armor, skill... these things are all meaningless compared to buffs. You have a normal character that is pretty much incable of doing anything, but throw some prophet, swordsinger, bladedancer, etc. buffs on him and now he is a god on earth. One fully buffed character is worth more than a full party of unbuffed characters.
Not all classes get these buffs, but those that do are perfect for botting. The Prophet class is the most extreme example. Prophet buffs (or their Warcryer counterparts) are pretty much compulsory for any party. Prophets have just enough MP to buff the party. Of course, their damage output is so insignificant compared to that of archers/daggers/nukers that they might as well sit AFK for 15 minutes while their buffs are in effect. At least this way they will have regenerated enough MP to rebuff the party when the time comes. Once the buffs wear off, they spring back to life and rebuff the party. Repeat.
I swear that Prophets were specifically engineered by NCsoft to be 2boxed. And what better class for botting? The only offensive capability they have is Dryad Root, which they rarely have enough MP for anyways (because they spend all their MP buffing).
Most of the other support classes suffer from a similar problem. Swordsingers and Bladedancers are buffers, but as fighter classes they have some decent DPS (especially BDs). Their MP consumption almost makes botting them difficult, but L2superman has a nice auto kick/invite feature that makes them as perfect for it as Prophets. Bishops, Elven Elders, and Shilen Elders are more confied to the healing role, which makes them perfect PVE bots but in PVP you want an actual person on heals. The orc mages make good bots, but Overlords especially are equipped with some spells that can be devastating in PVP.
Although L2 is a very PVP oriented game, the incredibly long grind means that you will still be spending most of your time in PVE. And for PVE the above-mentioned classes are all excellent for botting. And since you can't do anything in this game without buffs in the first place, you see bots everywhere.
Necessity is the mother of invention, and in L2 you need buffs. Bots are the solution, and are so effective that a huge percentage of the population is willing to risk it all to use them.
The problem isn't the bots, it's the game. But L2 fanboys/purists and NCsoft will call this heresy, so the reign of bots continues...
