I just disagree with this "they should let us play on private servers because it sucks anyway/is too expensive/private servers are better" mentality.
You're right that this is just an excuse. I play on private servers because the smaller communities are much more closely knit and there isn't such an issue with botters and cheaters. The increased XP / gold rates also allow me to get to the meat of the game without the need for excessive grinding.
If you introduced any of these elements to the official servers, I'm sure it would be super popular for a little while, but I doubt it would have the longevity that L2 is going for.
This is a design issue. Longevity, as it applies to games, can mean a number of things. The excessive use of grinding is an artificial way of producing longevity. Good gameplay however, is timeless.
I still play Tetris, Counter-Strike, Starcraft, NetHack, Pac-Man, Street Fighter 2, Chess, Checkers, Texas Hold 'Em, etc. All of these games are infinitely replayable. Unlike the games I just listed, MMOs don't rely on compelling gameplay to keep players interested. MMOs rely on a kind of "toy collector" mentality, herding you from one shiny object to the next. Why do you want that new sword? Because you don't have it. Once you get that new sword, you don't want it anymore. MMOs fill your free time with the pursuit of stuff and hope like hell that they've given you enough stuff to last until they can squeeze out another expansion with still more stuff. The first MMO that breaks this cycle will probably not have to worry to much about private servers. At least not to the extent that L2 does.
The real problem with L2 is that it's a good game buried under an unreasonably long grind. They could take out the grind altogether (allow players to start at the level cap) and just concentrate on sieges and PvP and be a much better game IMO.
You know whats really fun though, Technically speaking you can steal all the files you want take them all from WoW every model script to data line.
Change 1 point. Its not copyright for 2 reasons. One you have changed the data therefor it doesnt match there. 2. Come on people, the private servers arent ruining any of the games. I personally never play on them but who cares if there are 20 wow servers or 15 rose online servers its not like the companies are losing millions of players. The free servers are said to be slow, crappy, and more boring then the actual game.
FBI can kiss my ass, Blizzard wont even go to the FBI they will personally find you and hit you with a windfury mace (sry)
My only point is say your copying data. Um change the color of their eyes a tint on a weapon. its Legal. Unless you are litteraly using script for script your actual legal in a sense that they cant get mad. Read the ToS it says Copyright Infringment is not tolerated. Data copied exactly from World of Warcraft will not be tolerated blah blah.
I could care less for Free Servers but ...im sry it is illegal but thats pushing it? They have not really hurt these companies to much.
