As an EVE player I can certainly respect Saga of Ryzom. I seriously considered joining it many times. I certainly hope this doesn't spell doom or a significant retooling of the games core values.
i think eve online and ryzom were created my the same people under a different banner. they look alike. but you should join when or if the company gets taken over.
Sorry to say. But Ryzom as good idea as it was - had one gaping problem.
There was simply no content in the game. It did have beutiful world, ecology and some of the greatest communities ever.
But the game had no content , and dared to call that sandbox ... all that just couldnt hold water.
A good sandbox game should have open world, community and content.
And if you decide to make random ecology your only content. A real sandbox. Than you must give players much more posibilities - like building towns, cities, having real important and functioning economy.
Ryzom was simply another game with great idea, but unfinished (not the first game to fall under that category)
Hard core players managed to invest enough effort to keep playing... but many many others just didnt see where is the point?
Sadly for the community , and generaly beutiful game that should gotten a bit more devloper (investor) love...

Have you even played Ryzom? I don't think these two games could be any more different if they tried.
Having said that, it's sad that such a creative and clever game simply couldn't deliver on content.

Sad Day indeed, I played the free trial of Ryzom and must say i was very impressed by the concept. It's too bad they are "selling" it will probably go to SOE, or god forbid Blizzard. so they can dumb it down so that any half witted moron bnet kiddie can play and omg pwnz0r people.

LOL, this caught me by surprise.
But on a more serious note, I hate to see games with different concepts go under, and like some others... "almost" gave Ryzom a try. But the posts I saw from people on various forums sort of convinced me that it was a game for "elite" players ( sort of like Eve) and that I might not measure up as a lowly Noob.

I quit Ryzom about 1.5 years ago and went to EvE. At the time I predicted both here and in the SoR forums that Ryzom would not survive. They took a fantastic PvE concept, a dynamic war of survival against the Kitin, and completely forgot about it. Then they added half-baked PvP. The very ideas that attracted many people, including myself, to SoR, are the ones they abandoned first.
I know Grimachu has some specific ideas about what "content" is and is not. However, it is obvious that his tastes in this matter are not shared by enough people to create a viable game. What's especially sad is that Ryzom was supposed to have unique content that would have satisfied all. Grimachu doesn't like cookie-cutter quests; fine, many agree with him. But in SoR you might have had a situation where all of a sudden a call went out from some remote outpost that they were being attacked by a horde of Kitin. There was supposed to be an opportunity to influence and build a gameworld, based on player actions. Sadly, none of it was ever realized. I'm glad I got out when I did.

So I opted to leave WOW and return to DAOC.
