Help on buying a computer.

Do you think the following computer would be a nice gaming machine? Am I lacking something in this system or it seems fine. I want a computer that will be able to run Oblivion, Civilization 4, and Warhammer Online when it will come out.

I have a question about processors. A lot has changed in the processors since I last bought a computer, can this processor run the last Splinter Cell (which ask a normal 3ghz)? Intel Core 2 Duo is better than AMD, right?

Prices are in Canadian dollar, so it's normal if it's higher than prices in the US.

I know nothing of hardware, but I tell you this -

Floppy Drives Mitsumi FA404A-BK 7-IN-1 Floppy Drive & Flash Reader CF/SM/SD/MMC/MS Black

Is a total waste of money. Why spend 30 odd dolars on a floppy disk drive?

That will be an excellent machine for gaming.

No idea whether it's value for money, but the hardware spec is great.

It's not the floppy drive that I need, but the 7 in 1 Flash reader  : I have a Sony Memory Card for my camera, and a SD card for my PDA : it will allow me to transfer data more easilly.

I don't have an option to take only the 7 in 1 flash reader, it comes with a floppy disk drive.

If you want a really good gaming rig, I'd say bump the RAM to two gigs.

I highly suggest 2 gigs of RAM also; but you can get by with 1 provided you aren't doing online competitive FPS gaming where every frame counts.

Perhaps you should spring for the E6600 instead of the E6400- the E6600 has a 4mb cache instead of a 2mb which makes a big difference in high end gaming.  But yes- practically all Conroe processors- except for the base model; beats anything AMD has to offer in bench testing (FX 62) and around 1/3rd the price.  Clock cycles (Mhz/Ghz) means very little these days.

I also advise against the 7600 and going with a more recent card; as I have owned a 7600 and an x800 pro and they struggled with this year's and last year's games.  I now own an x1900GT that I got off Ebay brand new for under $200 and I'm very happy with it for the price.

Once I buy a Conroe and update my BIOS- I will be able to run F.E.A.R. at max settings flawlessly.  Still running an old Pentium 4 520 3ghz single core.

Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. ... There's a bad moon on the rise.

i dont get why your spending 300 dollars on a processor and half that on a video card.

the video card is significantly more important for gaming..........

i would personally get a BFG tech 7950.

or while in roam buy the new 8800 GTX....... 600 dollars but the best thats ever been concieved and ATI will not beat it in their new series.

P.S.  Save yourself the money on the copy of XP... I'm not saying to use another operating system... just to save yourself the money on it... internetz... *wink*

With the exception of my amd dual core processor, geil ram, different case and slightly different monitor that is almost identical to the rig I got just couple months ago for about $1650 Canadian. Best purchase of my life by far, although I am planning on throwing another $170 in soon to upgrade it to 2Gb of Ram.

Oh, and as to your question; Yes, it is an amazing gaming machine. Go for it! image

Buying a 7950, 7900 GT or the 7900 GTX is just over all a realy bad idea, if your in that price range, drop the cash and get an 8800 for DX10 and SM 4.0.

The 7600GT is by far probably the best deal on the market right now in the lower to mid range card deals, buy into one, save your money and invest in something come March. Either the 8800GTXT's that will be released or the 3K models about to be unvailed.

So you can install the drivers for your sata drive during windows installation?  So you can use it to boot from in an emergency or to falsh your bios in the future, or transfer word files.  I use mine all the time.

All current GFX cards will support DX 10.

DX10 has no new FX only optimised drivers. DX10 = DX9 with higher frame rates.
