of course GW's PvP is fun to some people and not so fun to others.
Its balanced and theres no I-WIN button. and considering we get an expansion every six months(about $9 a month) we get huge changes to our PvP with more abilities and another PvE campaige, along with general improvements for the whole game.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
either way it has some of the best PvP for an MMO... granted some people call fun PvP using power build #507 that 50% of the rest of the population is using also, fun. So ofcourse some people wouldn't like like it.

Originally posted by TwilightEdge I will just say this.. gw is the only online rpg which has tournaments.. (at least i didn't hear about other). =] So yes.. it is fun, at least for me.
Actually EvE has such tournements too which are telivised.
Anyway i voted pretty high as it at least tries and succedes [to a degree] to do PvP properly.
When I played GW at first the PvP was pretty fun. It was very hyped imo but it still did the job pretty well. After a few weeks I just got dead bored of it. Now I login every few weeks just to give it a small whiz to see if it's gotten fun again but alas, no. Same old same old. I guess what got to me the most was the fact that the PvP was very meaningless. There was no risk, no reward. There wherent any zones for your guild to control like Arena.net had promised.
I guess some of these issues that I have with the game have been fixed with the expansions. I wouldnt know seeing how I havent bought any of them. None of them really interested me really and my friends have told me that if I find the PvP in GW boring now then I'll just think that the PvP in the expansions is equally boring.

well im no expert.. but theres only what? 3 games where PvP actually has a real "point" and where there are rewards and penalties =/
"if" you can get into a good pvp guild I could see it being fun.
The problem is however, you see, is that 80% of the population of guild wars suck completly in PvP. Thus, it's hard as hell to get the rank 3 req. most pvp guilds have.
The strategy in GW PvP is insanely complex as you and your group choose your builds. I havent even started to understand PvP in GW and I have been playing GW on and off since release.
Heres some things that excite me in GW PvP:
~ The teams are always fair... you dont get kiddies ganking or people winning just because they are a high level and visiting low level areas
~ The elaborate Tournaments played out across all the GW Guilds
~ The strategy in creating a team build is incredibly complex and could easily be the difference between winning or losing
~ PvP requires very little twitch, but unlike most mmorpgs you must be quick thinking and communicative during play
~ Guilds can take ownership of Cantha outposts. As the two factions of Cantha fight, the maps of Alliance battles change, and factions take over each others cities.
~ The Hall of Heroes holds Country vs Country battles which determine the favour of the gods for each country. If your country is leading and has the favour of the gods, then you are given some helpful buffs in PvE play (for a price, and varying with location)
~ The PvP is not dependent on items or level
~ You can create PvP characters that are max level with the best items immediately after purchasing the game. You wont have much versitility though, and if you never played GW before you'll suck.
~ The new Hero Battles brings an awesome 1vs1 arena into light which combines real time strategy to the GW gameplay
~ There are plenty of rewards for PvP, including regular XP, a few different types of faction points (that help you increase your versitility, traded for items and guild stuff, used to take over cities in Cantha, buy fireworks even, ect), fame points & titles (show off your superiority to others with special emotes and titles), guild rating (bring fame to your guild by bringing it into the top ranking guilds), favour of the gods (fight for your nation to bring PvE buffs to all of those playing in your nation's districts), ect.
I'm probably missing some stuff but thats okay
Heres what is missing from GW PvP, and as you can tell I'm rather happy that these things are missing, but I know some people like them:
~ You cant have items stolen from you, other players cant take items from you after killing you or anything like that.
~ There arent massive battles, I think the max battle size is 24 players (and some NPCs), so those big raid battles where everyone is glitching around and dying instantly are out of the question in GW.
~ You cant beat other players just by getting the best items, and for that reason, you cant just buy a good GW account on eBay or something and think you'll be the king of guildwars.
~ Chat isnt disabled with opposing faction/enemy players... You can chat with them, they dont 'speak another language' or whatever. This means sometimes they'll be childish and say stupid things, and those of us who dont want to hear what the enemy has to say should probably disable their local chats.
Nooo I reckon you should go take a vacation. Video games are fun but sometimes we need something else to get us out of these depressive states, you know? Maybe go out and live a little, have some fun, smile, take off our hats, that sort of thing.

If you don't get into a good guild it probably sucks. Even than...hardly any people use VOIP chat because they're to cheap to buy a real mmo and they're to cheap to buy a mic. (My experience)

Yeah I agree to some extent. If I could do anything to GW, I would make it into a P2P game, just to get some extra content more often, to make it so people on mmorpg.com stop saying 'GW is not a mmorpg', and so that people stop playing GW just because you dont need a credit card to play. The lack of monthly payments mean that more kids play. It doesnt effect you much, especially once you found a suitable guild, but it can be annoying from time to time.
Actually right now I dont have a guild! So I'm missing out on some of the PvP, but not entirely. Having some friends is enough to get by, really. And as far as PvE goes, PUGs are still pretty decent, no worse than any other MMORPG. Even when there are kids in your group, as long as you dont cause troubles with them things usually go smoothly.
(GW probably wouldnt have done so well if it were a P2P game, but I dont care, if I could do one thing to it, I would make it P2P anyways, just because I'm selfish like that. Or maybe I would add a LFG window... Hum...)

I have to agree.
It is lots of fun at first. Especially, the Winter's Day snow ball fights which was really my first taste of pvp in GW. It does get boring after awhile though because it is all the same. I've never done guld pvp though, just went to the arenas where you get a random group so maybe guild pvp is better.
I think it is worth buying though since there is no monthly fee. I do still very rarely get on and play a little.
Your mind is like a parachute, it's only useful when it's open. Don't forget, you can use the block function on trolls.
In my opinion it is horrible / useless pvp, just as the entire game is. I honestly think it is funny how in alliance battles how people argue, oh god you kurzicks ****ing suck, or you luxons are horrible etc, when all it takes is a few seconds to leave your guild and join one of the other side. and controlling towns? useless.GVG battles, also nothing to get. Nothing to acheive, cause at level 6 you can have the best weapons in the game, and the armor is all about ricing out your character- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricer
and all people do is talk about a game being free, when does price have to do with how a game is, a measly 15 bucks a month?, ok so because a regular tv eats less power than a plasma that makes it better, everyone agree?
The battles were fun, but there was no war to win. What's the point?
The only thing I could see to achieve in it was beating my own personal score in consecutive wins. My highest was 36 I think, and 50 in the level 10 arena. I quit myself there because I got bored.
I enjoy pvp where there is a greater goal. Beating the other alliance, winning sieges, conquering land, etc. Not just "win the match". I just pick up ut2k4 if I want that kind of gameplay.
For people saying there is no reward, what do you call a free trip to wherever the tournament is held and 50.000$ for your team if you win. Or simply the fact that you are better than the other team (unlike many other games where you can only say, you had better equipment ).

Yes, all of the PvP is "useless" in guildwars, if you have a complete inability to get satisfaction out of playing a game against other people, and beating them because you are more skilled than them. I love this idea that game activities are useless unless fake items drop when you beat someone. "Want to play some Chess?" "No, Chess is a useless game, because if I beat you, you won't drop a Quel'Serrar".
I think it's a real shame what all of the gear dependent MMOs have done to peoples thinking about games.

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
i hope you're not implying that in other games pvp is a solo effort the fact that there is no serious penalty to pvp its not fun or a challenge

Pointless pvp... WHO CARES? I just wanna kill people, not have some epically long storyline building up to getting to kill people.
But, different people different tastes. Oh and I rated it "yeah" coz its good but not that good.
