Memento (2000) -- Fantastic movie

SerienSerien Member CommonPosts: 8,460
This may be a very trite type of thread, but give me a break here guys --

I've always loved movies that make you think, as in, think a LOT. This movie is phenomenal, I do suggest that anyone that likes to predict the ends of movies to go check this one out.

I could go into deep detail about the plot, but it's about a man whose wife gets raped and killed while he received a blow to the head causing brain damage disallowing him to create new memories.
He is in search of the rapist and killer -- with no short term memory.

It's a really, really great movie.

It just shot up to number one on my list, and that's hard to do! image

Potential spoiler ahead, hilight to read:

The thing that pissed me off when I watched the movie: If the guy has short term memory loss, how does he remember the fact that he has short term memory loss, and remind people of this fact throughout the movie?

Other then that, yea I'd recommend seeing it. I enjoyed it.

How can you search for somthing when you can't make new memories? Don't that mean you can't remind yourself of new clues? My top movie that seems to be in this type of catagory is Inside Man.

Ahh ok, well I do know some movies have to accept some certain "problem" to accour that can't be explained in order to still make a movie. I wonder if I said that right?

Madjoe, do you know if Leanord's wife was a diabetic?

was he "Sammy" himself? or was Teddy just messing with his head?

    suspension of disbelief.

Hey in that Star Wars movie they had the sounds of lazer fire and explosions! There isn't sound in space!!!

    suspension of disbelief.

Anyway if you liked that movie, go see Idenity with John Cusak and others. Really good plot twists and what not.

In regards to Memento, I praise it for it's original style and interesting story, but IMHO.... not that great a flick.

    I've already seen Memento too

even in the cinema if I'm remembering correctly

really good movie, I can recommend it as well, although I had a pretty hard time understanding the whole contents while watching it for the first time

Latro in the mist is much better.  Greek soldier recieves a head wound and possibly a curse.  Every 12 hours he forgets pretty much everything.  He writes his experiences on a scroll daily to remind himself what has happened, who he is, who he can trust, and where he is going.  Oh, and now he sees the spirits and gods of the greeks and others.  Latro in the Mist, Gene Wolfe.  It's a book, so it'll require reading.  And, being that isn't a pop-up book with pictures,  99% of you wouldn't even try to read it.

I think that movie is great, seen it twice, but that is not enough.  There is something that whipped my thought process about this movie into a frenzy at the end, the last time I saw the film.  And I believe it gives you some answers, but I could not watch it again because I had to leave a friends house.  Now I need to go out and find this...

Eh...Watchable but I didn't really care for it. Clean Slate with Dana Carvey was better.

Great movie. It's on my top list. I love these movies, movies that you have to watch several times to really "get". To be honest I was kinda confused after I saw it the first time image

It saddens me that a Gene Wolfe reader can be such a douche.

I hadn't seen the movie in a good while, so I rewatched it when you asked this.
I can logically say that it could go either way. Leonard could have easily created Sammy as a coping mechanism, or he just as easily could have just used Sammy as a frame of reference for the condition.
It is the beauty of biased narration. It's one of my favorite forms of storytelling, as it leaves a lot of choices up to the reader/viewer.
All things considered, though, with Leonard's attitude at the end of the movie, I'd say he is Sammy.
