i played eve for about 3 months and quit and came back a few times as there is just something good in that game that draws me to it and many many things that i find bad and boring that drew me away from it.
95% of the time i was bored with nothing to do but go do boring repetative missions and kill drones. not even sure if it was worth it to play, i could of just keep on raising my sp's by loging in here and there untill i finaly had something usefull. old players own you regulary, big alliances already own big part of the universe, is there really a place in this world for a fresh starter? these things i found bad.
good things were as eve seemed as the most realistic mmo envirenment i have seen, with me playing other mmo's. however pvp system is just plain silly, click&orbit ship control is silly, and all you gotta do is fit your ship as good as possible with as good gear as possible and pray you encounter a ship that matches your fitting/ship class to wtfpwn him. and ofc press those 5 buttons needed in actual fight. no brainstorming there.even this i could go with, if there wasnt for those bad things i encountered 1st. that i will always, always be behind really old players by a mile. that their alliances are so strong i can just out my tail between my legs and run when i see some of those players and their inbalanced buddies.
what i wanted to ask is, will there ever be a fresh start in eve? like a new server or something? i would consider coming back to eve as i see its potential, but in a envirement where you could actualy fit into.
i dont know what ccp is thinking due to the porblem of new players, the more the time passes by, new players will find it harder and harder to blend into this economy, wich is already really imbalanced.
i would also like to see a game like eve but better, with many holes fixed, where your actualy a character and not a ship, walking on spacestions. where skillpoint system would be fixed with something better than the current "do misssions for 1st 2 months untill u get some guns to actualy survive". where you would actualy have controls to fly your own ship, not have it autoorbit/click in space to move. also in all current mmo's this system where you have your target and just click skills just plain sucks, with big random hits that 2 shot someone doe to your gear you gained in last 2 years to "poon" alot of noobs. all mmos today miss the skill aspect in combat.
all ya eve fans, dont take this the wrong way, im just saying what i tought that was good and what sucks about eve. sure, if your into it and have some imagination eve can be awesome for you, same as any other mmo. but really, what you do is preditermined by the limited game mechanics, wich leave very little room for improvisation. and those game mechanics just keep you playing as long as you can, the longer you play the better you are, and not becouse you gained skill but becouse you gained stuff.

The best advice I can give you is set yourself a goal. What do you want to be? What do you want to pilot? Check the skills you need to fly and equip the ship you're in love with, and focus on those skills completely. I made the mistake of collecting a wide range of skills and training them all, meaning I could fly many ships but none of them very well.
You WILL catch up to veterans if you focus - not it terms of number of skillpoints (which is actually a very inaccurate way of determining the pilots capabilities in the ship they're flying) but in terms of how far you can bring a single ship. There are only so many skills which benefit a single ship, and in the end a vet can still only fly one ship so the playing field does level out. It just means they can choose from a wider variety of ships than you.
Regarding PvP, there is strategy and smarts in fitting your ship, in forming your gangs, in picking your fights, in knowing how to swiftly react to enemy tactics, and especially in working together.
That will likely just get you killed mate, it seems simple.... and silly.... its not.
*hint* you can fly your ship, there are things like tracking and distance affecting ability of gunnery, modules that improve yours - even through odd ways like simply slowing them down. These you must learn and understand to both win and avoid losing.
Yes there a is an imbalance amongst some things, but why should someone whos invested time and of course money have the same as you - your trial and 2 weeks paid up go kill someone 1 year in.... you can do this, but they should always have the ability to match and supercede your fittings and ability. Personally id be disheartened if new born babies came into this world all prepped and ready to write a test for me in computing. I like to think my extra years mean something.... however a 10 year old.... id be happy if one could.

a new server or something?
Sorry, its a single shard perpetual universe.
Just like real life. If you want it youll have to learn how to take it, fair means or foul.
You couldnt choose a better time to come back to EVE. With new characters getting 800k SP on startup as of wednesday you can jump right into the action. Not only that but adv learning skill pre-reqs are being reduced to level 4 basics, that cuts around 20 days off your learning skill learning time.
Decide how you want to make isk, mining or missions. Then decide where you want to go from there, Industry or PVP? Specialize your skills, it takes longer to cover multiple areas. Find an active corp that works in that area and make sure its active. You want to be grouping with people nightly and doing weekly events. Corps are a core feature in EVE, try to get involved, build friendships.
If you do all the above and your not having fun, then I guess EVE isnt for you.

Yes there is a way for a fresh starter as proven by quite a few players I know. Don't let yourself be intimidated big large entities, like alliances. Most large entities in EVE which were destroyed or had to disband happened because of smaller groups of players. It's all about planning and the motivation to actually do something with the possibilities EVE offers. The rest of your post contains so many false facts or half true statements, that I think you might have simply not "played properly" (for a lack of better term). Hook up with a bunch of players (ideally maybe one of them an experienced player) and try to explore your possibilities. If all you see in EVE is mining and doing missions you are not really bothering to look. And I won't even go into that "buhuhu he has more SP than me" discussion, because it has been proven over and over that organization, dedication, and planning overrule SPs. Always.
One good-meant advice. EVE is as good as the people you play it with. EVE is not meant to be played solo, actually you can't play it solo, since you always interact with players, directly or indirectly.
If you need advice or help, I (and others here) can offer that, but to find yourself a goal (or to motivate yourself to find one) is your task, nobody can help you with that.

like people hae said, eve is an mmo that you really NEED to not play solo. it's a social game, on many levels. while being sociable in a typical mmorpg just means that you chat ingame or on voice, with folks while you each do your own thing, or you're all farming something, so you're on auto-pilot ingame and just chatting to pass the time on voice... it means something different in a game like eve.
you could always set about to recruiting other new/semi-new players to your corporation, expanding that corporation into an alliance, and then set out to take a 0.0 system. you don't have to be greedy and try to conquer all of eve. your new alliance could easily make friends with other alliances and live happily ever after. i think ISS is an example of a 'neutral' alliance that holds a number of systems, and yet they've also built up a sizable navy fleet.

You can play this solo as well tho.. its not as fun..
I have seen huge battles fought and its a spectacle to be sure.. some folks get lag.. some folks dont depends on your pc and how much stress the node has.
I will say this again:
This is the only MMO where YOU control your destiny

UO is no longer an MMO is it? and I have never played ryzom.. basicly what I mean you control your destiny is that you can Actually influence the game and other players to side or go against you.. not some cookie cutter you cannot attack that garbage

Um
UO absolutely is still an MMO. And it still has over 100,000 players last I heard. Need to come out from under your rock more often. In fact UO is about to get a huge graphics update. Won't make it 'modern' but it definitely improves the current one a ton.
Ryzom is ok I guess. I found it really mind-numbingly boring. Which is obviously a common reaction to it since Nevrax is now officially bankrupt after being in bankruptcy protection for the past 2 years. The game just isn't making any money. So who knows what's going to happen with Ryzom. My guess is since it doesn't have a big IP behind it it'll just die though. No real incentive for anyone to buy Nevrax out and try to keep it going.

hopefully, the non-linear-progression genre will grow and the dummied down "here's what you do from start to finish" style of wow will not have lots of new games.

Unfortunately I fear quite the opposite will be true. People have seen that a stupided down game like WoW sells a trillion copies and therefore more people will play a dumb, spoon fed game rather than a challening "you mean I have to think?" type game.
MMORPGs are slowly turning from labors of love where the story and challenge were the main goal to money making monsters where selling copies and just getting it done are all that matter. That's the main reason most games now are considered an "MMOG" rather than "MMORPG", they've taken the roleplaying out of games and made them.. just games.

Hmm
Tabula Rasa and Darkfall are both going to be non-linear.
Few others are planning to as well (but they're not even in beta yet so we'll see).
Non linear isn't dead. Just because 1 or 2 big hits are going linear doesn't mean every game will. Not every developer wants to be 'just another EQ/WoW clone'.
