Sleeper Hit?

MrViceMrVice Member Posts: 197

It's 2004, and anybody who knows anything about the video game market knows that this is the year of the mmorpg.  In fact in this year alone, there will be more mmorpgs released then there are currently on the market.  The big boys are going up to bat, blizzard with their WOW, SOE with EQ2, EA with UO:X, and AC soft with L2.  Those games aren't what this post is about, what I would like to know is, which gaming company is going to have the sleeper hit of 2004.  Which game is going to emurge into it's own, despite not having a big pr budget or a name brand dev.  Much like Mythic did three years ago with DAOC.  I'm currious what you all have to say, but please don't turn this into a this game rox thread.  Please be prepared to back you're opinion with facts.

Hard to tell until you actually get to see how the gameplay is.  Can only speculate so far just from graphics alone.  I dont think anything will beat EQ2 just because SOE is established and has a large player base with EQ.  SOE knows they did it right and I dont think EQ2 will be an exeption.

If its true that when you drop a cat it lands on its feet or if you drop toast it lands butter-side down... what happens if you strap toast to a cats back and drop it?

Um... I would hardly call EQ2 a sleeper.  Sure it's not crapping out information like WOW, but it's still I highly publicized game wth an a already large support base.   And while I agree that it's hard to tell what a game is going to be like without actually getting your grubby hands on it, you can still get a fair idea of what a game is going to be like by reading FAQ's, Dev Journals and or Interviews, and from reviews from beta players... not that they're supposed to be any of those...

Keep an eye on Guild Wars.  I think it might become a "sleeper" hit for 2004 image

Yes, this is the one I am looking forward to. It looks like it has the right formula for a very entertaining game.

I didnt call EQ2 a sleeper hit, as you put it.  Im just saying the competition will be hard pressed.

What about Realms of Torment?  Aging, possible permana death, lineage, etc.  Sounds interesting.

I'm hoping for Guild Wars to be an extreme hit for the MMORPG.  It's the one I'm looking forward to the most out of all the ones coming out.

I am not much putting much stock in a MMORPG game that doesn't have a monthly fee. Guild wars will clearly have to skimp on something for that to to work. It looks and sounds awesome but that single point scares me.

I'm not sure CoH is considered a sleeper, but I think it will be one of the best for 2004. Guild Wars is definitely a sleeper and might shock some people.

Its not going to be released this year, but I can see Vanguard: Saga of Heros to be an amazing game.  This will be in part because Brad McQuaid (co-creator of EQ) will be on the design team and he knows what it takes to make a MMORPG.  EQ began to go downhill with tedious events and waterdown content after he left.

As for a sleeper, City of Hero's is my bet.

I agree with you on this.  A MMORPG will never be high quality without a monthly fee.  However, I think GW is going to get their fees all the same with a system that divides their world into many upgradable zones.  I imagine that they are planning on bringing in the same revenues - just using a different model.  But it too hope that it works image
