MMOG - Massively Multiplayer Online Game (meaning atleast 10,000 simultaneous users online - limit by I don't know who, I can't remember who gave it, Origin I think).

Genres:

1)  MMOPKG - Player-Killing (first game:  Lineage by NCSoft has a user base of twice the amount UO and EQ combined; also Lineage 2 by NCSoft as well)

2)  MMORPG - Role-Playing (first game:  Ultima Online by Origin Systems, Inc.)

3)  MMOHNSG - Hack-n-Slash (first game:  EverQuest by Sony Entertainment; another game: Ragnarok Online by Gravity)

4)  MMOFPSG - First-Person-Shooting (first game:  ToyLand [something] by NCSoft [again])

(have I forgotten something or have something to add?)

Types:

1)  Fantasy

2)  Science Fiction

3)  Sci-Fi Fantasy

4)  SuperHero  (first game:  City of Heroes by NCSoft [for the 4th time])

(anything else?)

I don't think it would count but I played magic online for right at 2 years(just quit recently) and lord of the ring tcg came out not too long ago. Again prolly dosen't count for what you are talking about but there were tons of people on magic online.

EQ isn't hack and slash.  If you consider it hack and slash, I doubt you've actually ever played a real hack and slash MMO.  It's an MMORPG just like UO, and UO wasn't the first MMORPG, Meridian 59 was.

NCSoft has only 4 MMORPGs. Lineage 1, Lineage2, CoH, and Guild Wars. Not sure what Toyland game you are talking about. Neocron considers themselves the first FPS MMORPG. For all I know they are the first in that category (not genre).

The RTS Genres are starting to be formed into MMO. (slowly)

So far I know of these two:

Good.  Well, I guess it's time we set the categories and/or genres for MMOGs.

Nope not Toyland, I now got the name it's "Toy Strikers".  They're claiming that it's an MMOFPSG.

From what I know NCSoft's released game are:  Lineage, Lineage 2, Gameting, City of Heroes.

Currently under development:  Toy Strikers, Tabula Rasa, and Guild Wars.

Well most of your facts are wrong, as stated, Meridian 59 is and will always be the first MMORPG, made in what, 1993 or something?

And also, EQ is not a hack n slash game, reserve that right to a game like RO or D2.

Also, I'm pretty postive Neocron would be the first FPSMMO.

Also to note, a little spurn of an MMORPG:

CORPG (Competitively Online Role Playing Game) , Titles (and only one title):

    Guild Wars.

It's called MMOFPS.. FPS for first person shooter.

I'd like to add the genre historical.. For Pirates of the Burning Sea and especially A Tale in the Desert. Historical can have fighting in it, or be non-combat such as ATITD.

Yeah theres the MMORTS, (Real Time Strategy) games like Homeworld and Homeworld 2 ( although they have single player too, its still considered a MMO too ) and Darkspace, EvE, and a variety of others.

RTS games arent common because they usually require alot of people to maintain them and the things the create, because it is a hassle too.

We are not after who's right or who's wrong.  We are after to gethering informations, correct stuffs, and compile the facts.

Yes Meridian 59 but the question is, articles, researches, and even MMOG companies do not consider Meridian 59 as the 1st MMOG.  In fact, the Western world knew that Ultima Online was the first (and many claims that they coined the term Massively Multiplayer Online Game and set the standard of an MMOG to have at least 10,000 online players simultaneously [read the articles during 1997-1999]).  But after Richard G. left EA, he finally confirmed that the 1st was Lineage by NCSoft which came out in 1996 (read articles on the net).

So the question now, who to believe?  It came from Richard G. himself that Lineage came out before Ultima Online and that makes Lineage the first MMOG and Ultima Online the second.  I for one can argue Meridian 59 is the first but again all the recorded reports, articles, and historical records says otherwise.

    Decision?

    ---

I haven't played EQ.  I used to believe it's an MMORPG but after reading the statement of researchers and Richard G. (somewhere, wish I saved the URL) that EQ is a HnS I was shocked, EQ is an MMOHNSG argh.  Care to clear this issue?  You've played EQ, I wish I can, so what is EQ really?  MMORPG?

It's the same with RO.  RO becomes an MMOHNSG if the players do just that, but if Role-Players are active in RO (any server, any country) RO will be an MMORPG.  It's a good point (made in another forum) but that's not the criteria, the criteria is the "environment" is RO RP-encouraging or HNS-encouraging?  Certainly many will agree that RO is a HNS-encouraging environment and thus making it an MMOHNSG.

So for EQ what's the verdict?

I think we the players should really take back the control of MMOGs.  Researchers and developers and companies should not be the one to dictate what is and what's not, don't you agree?  Most of the time they do stuffs their own way.  They don't give a damn with the sub-categories of MMOGs so we the players should.  If they want to create games without considering much of or requests then let's start by defining what an MMOG is and by defining the sub-categories of MMOGs and the criterias.

Maybe the time will come when these companies will start listening to us "the players" of what's good and what's not in an MMOG because we made an effort to standardized the MMOG Genre.

Example:  Should we use MMOFPSG or MMOFPS?

Right now we're clear that an MMOG must have at least 10,000 simultaneous online users.  An MMOG is a Parent Category with it there are Sub-Categories like MMORPG.

    Accepted Sub-Categories are:

    MMORPG

    MMOFPS / MMOFPSG

    MMOHNSG

    MMORTS / MMORTSG

Anything else to add?  Criterions?  Decisions?  Violent Reactions?
