Today I was getting pretty frustrated with FFXI because I was paying money to look at a blank desert begging for a team. I was sorely tempted to reinstitute my Lineage 2 account because of this. I loved Lineage 2, but the very small community finally drove me away. At least on Leona the population has dropped significantly ever since Warcraft came out.
I'd heard about Silkroad Online but never actually gave it a try beyond ten minutes. A good friend of mine that still plays Lineage 2 was thinking about switching over to Silkroad because he had heard it was so similar to L2. I decided to give it a real try this time, because really what did I have to lose. It's free. The game is bloody fun once you get into it. I suppose it can be considered a grind because you have to kill a lot of mobs before you level up, but each battle only lasts a couple seconds so it evens out to what you have to do for Warcraft or Everquest anyway.
The main reason I think it appeals to me is that the interface, aside from a few finer points, is almost exactly like Lineage 2. I work for a family company that is shutting down after 10 years so my financial future is in serious question, so I like the fact that it is free to play. Granted some of the items you can buy from the item mall for real money are tempting, like the 100% experience scrolls etc..but they are not necessary. That's one thing going in FFXI's favor, items that grant more xp are traded for conquest points instead of real money but the forced grouping and monthly fee have turned me off a bit.
To make a long story slightly longer, I am really enjoying Silkroad Online. I really doubt that it is for everyone, but based on the server population it sure seems to be for a heck of a lot of people.

I returned to Silkroad recently.
The lag is down a lot; they still have the issue where I can only really log-in early mornings/late evenings, but that's fine by me. I'm just impressed they reduced the lag by so much since last time I played.
Ok,it suffers a lot of problems but I still think it's the best free MMORPG I've ever played, and continue to play now.
When I started playing Silk Roads, it seemed awesome, interface was a little crappy but the graphics are amazing for a free game. Anyways, the whole game is a level grind. There isn't really any sort of background story, it's just "go to this person for a quest"
then he tells you "go kill 10 of this creature"
then "20 of another creature"
and so on...
I didn't really get too far into the game, so my opinion might not be that great. I don't know if the storyline picks up after the initial 15 or 20 lvls. But no one should have to sit and grind for 20 lvls for something to become exciting.
well in my opinion SRO (silkroad online) is a nice and iteresting game, exept for the lag and the fact that there are lots of boters !!! and there for making it almost impossible for players to join a server and play, other than that SRO is fun playin it from lvls 1-25, from lvl 25 the game just seems like its never gonna let u go up one more lvl at least, and also even thought each player lvls have their own area they can be in, high lvls still annoy and make it almost impossible for everyone else to enjoy, for example, a week ago (if im correct) in SRO there was a special Thanxgiving event, where players would be able to aquire special items and give it to a special NPC, the NPC would reward u with a random item like 3k, special identity card, etc. but most of the time u would get the oh so famous "monster summom scroll". all the high lvl players (lvl 45+) would go to areas where low lvl players would roam and dey would summon dese horribly strong monsters and everyone exept the high lvls would get owned, to me SRO is only fun once u get to a high lvl, like 40 at least, so u dont get owned by every player around you, i currently have a lvl 27,13,19 and 18 characters in venice server, and it is so annoying the fact that i cant lvl up cause of all the high lvls roamin around low lvl areas. so if u want to have a really good time in SRO my advice is as soon as they make a new server try to be one of the 1st people to join the server and lvl up as quick as possible until u hit 20 (1-20 lvling is quick if der arent high lvls around u to bother u), den ull finnaly get to enjoy SRO to the fullest.
*sry for my bad grammar*
Me and my friends played up to about 21-22. So, we took a quest that was to find 100 of these "Eggs" or whatever from mobs. The drop rate was like litteraly one egg in like 10 kills.
So after a ton of grind we turned it in and got the next quest. "find 500 eggs'.
