OK - I know that depends on my personality, etc. but thought I would take a stab in the dark.
The last time I've played a MMORPG is Asheron's Call 1 when it first came out. I'm looking at re-entering the MMORPG world and wanted to know which game I should start with... I was thinking AC2; however, I'm concerned since it has been out awhile that I might be the only newbie joining.
So, are there any new MMORPG games that may make sense... I loved AC1 and would like something similar.
Would it be Final Fantasy XI or Everquest????
I also want to make sure I fit in (i.e. everyone is at a level of 100 and it just doesn't make any sense for me to play since the others are either killing me or killing all of the creatures, etc.).
Or, Since I own an XBOX, should I just wait for FABLE --- whenever it comes out.
Thanks!

FFXI is recent and you definitley would not be the only newbie. It's very friendly and i'm sure there's people to help you.
Everquest has been out for 5 years and people won't help you out.
FFXI- 27Warrior/13Monk

If you liked AC1... your best bet may very well be AC1 still today.
Most of the newer games have polished graphics, but have streamlined everything so much so that all the little kids can play, it really seems to take away a lot.
I would avoid AC2. Nice graphics. Shrinking player base everyday. And there is a reason for that. AC1 has about 10 times the active players today as AC2 does. And again, there's a reason for that. It's a MUCH better game. Also AC1 (and AC2) has went back to Turbine and they are promising a new re-vamped graphics expansion in the future, and have re-released the game client available for download at their website. Check it out! ...btw, I would bet that AC2 will be completely shut down within a year as they realize there is simply too much cost and trouble for the still- shrinking player base.
Other games that are very good with superb graphics and large player bases are Dark Age of Camelot. If you buy this one, buy the GOLD edition first (about $15-$20) - It has both the first editions combined... then consider buying the latest expansion, Shrouded Isles (about $20-$30).
Lineage II is a very strong game with stellar graphics, PvP and looks to have a very huge player base as well. It launches next month. I am playing the beta, and love it. (Still wish it was a little more like AC1 and not quite so stream-lined however)... but it's still going to be a top notch mmorpg.
Also, if you have never checked out or played the king of mmorpg's, then you should. Ultima Online started it all back in 1997, taking MUDS graphical and every mmorpg today owes its success to the original king, UO. Ultima Online is still one of the best mmorpgs out. The graphics are dated, yes. But they are still cleaner and prettier then some recent strategy games like "Rise of Nations". The sheer depth and possibilities are unmatched by every mmorpg out since. The fun factor of UO is probably the highest of all games today. And there's a good reason UO still has over 250,000 loyal subscribers even after 6 years on the market. Yet another expansion is promised later this year.. Talk about keeping a game going strong! (If you do try UO, download it and try it for free at the website. Also, DO NOT play the 3d Version!! The 2D is BY FAR prettier, easier to see, and attractive).
Hope my suggestions help you.
P.S. Keep your eye on two games coming to us in the future... "Dark and Light" and "Darkfall" both look very, very, very promising. Other possible great mmorpg's this year could be "World or Warcraft" and Turbines(makers or Asherons Call) Lord of the Ring "Middle Earth Online".

Either it's a testament to the development cycle of older MMOG's or the fact that some new releases have been a major disappointment, but I've noticed a number of posts where players have been going back to established MMOG's.
Personally, I think this is a good thing because in most - not all - cases, there is a well estabalished community, an established, hopefully polished game and these games must have something to offer. That said, from reading the specific MMOG forums on the left (look at the game listings forums) some like EQ, would feel rather empty as a newbie.
I was always skeptical about trying established MMOG's after a few years because I felt that the player base wouldn't be there, or would be far too high level and I would be left on my lonesome. Pushing that skepticism aside, I intend on trying out AO after my examination in June (intermediate stage accountancy).

Which MMOG? Factor in the following:
Setting: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, RL, etc?
PvE vs PvP?
What kind of combat, crafting and economic system?
Level treadmill? Skill based system?
You really need to sit down and work out what features are you looking for in a MMOG. Once you know yourself, feel free to refine your question and also pay a visit to the individual MMOG forums on this site. The great thing about established MMOG's is that there is a wealth of player feedback - disclaimer: take with a pinch of salt, ignoring 1 sentence unsubstantiated posts.

Ah, fantasy based eh? (AC1). Never played any of the AC games but you're a little out of luck on the ol' fantasy titles. Looking at the game list (not definitive but a good start finger-in-the-wind style) we have:
AC
AC2
DAoC
EQ
Final Fantasy XI
Horizons
UO
Of those, DAoC is primarily PvP in the latter stages of the game i.e. Realm vs Realm. Only played EQ in the list but 5 years on, newbies might struggle as player comments mention that early expansion zones are bereft of players (you mentioned this fear in your post).
AC2 and Horizons would be 'caveat emptor' (let the buyer beware!) so I would definitely read up on the forums as well some of the other game sites.
