No I don't mean skill based like Quake 3...
I mean Skill based as an alternative to class systems. This can be seen
in games like Ultima Online, Neocron, and pre-cu-nge SWG.
This is by far my favorite type of MMORPG, usually these games have
social skills and involve much more then combat. Such as non-combat
skills like taming creatures, dancing, alchemy. These skill set based
character encourge roleplay, and discourge grinding levels.
What I'm asking is. Can you guys think of more examples of these skill set character systems?

Saga of Ryzom had the best skill based system going. Too bad they couldn't make a better go of it. I really hope some developer out there picks up their stanza idea. It's nice to be able to customize skills.

EVE Online is completely skill-based.

Saga of Ryzom has a very nice skillbased system.
You even build your own Actions, e.g. you could build a spell dealing cold-damage with low powercost but long casttime or vice versa.
Edit:
Well, someone was quicker so I'll answer the reply:
Yes, but dosnt Ryzom still have levels?
Sure they have levels, but they are different from levels in other games. If you use heal-spells you'll get levels in Defensive Magic allowing you to buy new Heal-Spells or Buffs. If you use melee attacks you'll earn some levels in melee-combat.
It's a quite complex system without class restrictions.
Yeah levels opened up higher skill sets and branches of skills. It was remarkably well done.

I dont know if this really discourages grinding. You can grind a level, a quest, a raid, an instance, or even skills.
THe only thing i have ever seen promote roleplay is roleplayers in mmo's.
The only way i can see something promoting roleplay that would also kill the grinding mentality is have a game more honed on player skill over player gear.
overall, meaning high level players can destroy low level players 100%
of the time. Usually the only way to level up is to gain experience,
which is through combat. There are countless things a character can do
and learn other then combat.
not all roleplayers want to grind killing murloks to level up.
with a select skill system players get better at what they want, doing what they want. which keeps the roleplayer in character.
