Wow, that shows your intelligence. Obviously, I was referring to the 10yr old behind the character. With such astoundingly high intelligence, it's a wonder why you're a WoW Player and not an EVE Player. It boggles the mind.
Originally posted by ChaoticPasta For all its complexities, this game seems to boil down to the same thing every other MMO does: He who played the most is better.
Not really, it's the pilot that knows how best to fight that is "better". That has little to do with in game skill levels of skill points. A young pilot that takes the time and effort to learn the game and train his character to take advantage of skills, ships, weapons and encounters will do better than someone's that's played since day one but hasn't learned any tactics.
How long you've played and how many skills you have and how big your ship is means nothing if the other PERSON is smarter than you.
And fizzle sounds like he never tried, all his complaints, while true on one level, are easily avoided or handled. Again, just have to learn the world, not the skills.
Wait... so first you come here saying EVE is a waste of time don't play it. I and everyone else argue and prove your accusations wrong, so now you go off the deep end saying ALL MMORPGs are a waste of time, complaining how you wasted your time playing WoW for a couple of months, and suggesting that everyone should quit, go to a bar, and get drunk? Why are you even here at mmorpg.com?
If you believe you're wasiting your time playing MMORPGs then I would go out on a limb to suggest that you're still waisting your time by spending it trolling a website dedicated to MMORPGs.
Congratulations! You've spent your time trolling this thread and you'll never get that time back. Cheers!
Hey there, i would say do the 14day trial and give it a whirl. I have been playin for 11days now and i didnt even do the trial, and tbh wiv you im bloody lovin the game. I cant fault it in anyway, im enjoyin the online experince and this is the first mmorpg iv ever played.
So if i was you have a go at the 14day trial and just see for ya self.
I have to ask, are all the "post deleted" signs created by the mods? If so, wow, a lot of flaming must have occurred...but now the meat of this post.
Originally posted by fizzle322 At first glance Eve is deep and extremely complex. When you get right down to it tho, it's basically a juvenile grieferville. Can't even do a mission without other players bothering you.The answer is always "wardec em" but people are actually doing missions to make money, if they had money to go wardec and run around losing ships, they wouldn't be doing missions.Basically in one fell swoop CCP has gutted the PVE side of Eve, and only left the PVP side.
Let's talk about missions. I do them quite a bit, so much I can use the best lvl 4 agents out of Freedom Extension. In all the missions I've done to reach that point, I have not been bothered one bit.
Granted, my current agent is in a lowsec system so I can potentially be bothered. But that has yet to be a problem, and they would have to camp the station to really bother me. For one I'm in the mission area, (especially a deadspace mission area) I'm pretty immune to any others.
YOu can also keep easier tabs on people in the system via the standings/sec status icons being show in local chat now.
But as far as them gutting the PvE side, I don't think so. I don't really have time to list everything they've done to boost PvE in EVE, but it's pretty substantial. It may not be up to the par of the more PvE oriented games but they are certainly not unenjoyable.
Originally posted by fizzle322 Myself personally, I've always been the type that like to do EVERYTHING in the game, just not all at the same time. When I want to mine, I just want to mine and relax, not deal with little kids. When I want to PVP, I want to just focus on killing, not deal with resource management and where do I get my next ship from.WHen I want to PVE, I just want to PVE and not have to deal with shmucks trying to bother me.Basically I like everything neatly compartmentalized, so I can pick and choose what I want to do on any given night. In Eve you cannot do that.
Want to mine and relax, do it in highsec (in some places there is even kernite in the high areas, and pyrox/omber are also stable ores for highsec).
Want to do it in low sec, join a good corp, or in a out of the way lowsec area.
You can relax and not worry about "little kids" bothering you.
As far as PVPing without worrying about logistics. Well, you want PVP that is the total opposite of what EVE is. The subject on the superiority of FFA PVP (and I speak this as a more "carebearish/industrialist" player) is part of another thread but it can be summed up in one sentence.
Its keeps the economy going, by supplying a constant demand for goods.
Hence, it helps industrial players, and I've already spoken about PvE. Granted there is still some risk, but you just have to keep on your toes.
Originally posted by fizzle322 In Eve if you want to mine, you will be FORCED to fight.
Or you can mine smart, or mine with friends. The latter are not hard to find.
Originally posted by fizzle322 If you want to fight, basically that just means you sit at a gate all day *yawn*
You've never been in a raid have you? They are anything but camping gates. Sometimes camping is neccessary if you want to secure a system, but usually there is a very good reason why. Plus, if you do it with friends (which is usually the case) it's easier.
Originally posted by fizzle322 If you want to PVE again you are forced to fight.PVP only exists to wave your e-peen at other people, it's not a test of skill, basically your ship fights on auto, and you only press a few buttons. It's not like WoW where if you are really fast you can wtfpwn someone. In Eve no matter how fast you are, BC always > cruiser.
It also requires a good setup, moving your ship to an optimal range, aligning it so it'll have the best chance to hit (transversal), or as a defensive move, staying out of your enemy's range, keeping your tranversal up so he can't hit you easily, and using your setup to counter his.
It's not a twitch game, but you certainly have to keep on your toes, and it's certainly not automatic.
Have you ever been in a good fleet fight?
About the BC > Cruiser thing...
A SR speed setup throax can do some serious damage, if not destroy, a LR brutix. Add on or more thorax's (or any other cruiser) it doesn't matter either way, the Brutix is toast.
It's all about a good setup and smart manuvering.
Honestly Fizzle I'm pretty sure I told you this before...
Originally posted by fizzle322 I mean people make excuses like "Eve is a PVP game."Well it's not really a PVP game because theres no RL skills involved.BF2 is a PVP game, Eve is a time investment game, the more time you play the bigger your e-peen gets.Aaaaanyway.The first few months in Eve is exciting. After a while you begin to see a pattern.PVP = Either griefing (stealing ore, stealing cans, etc) or camping gates/stations.What it all boils down to is that Eve is about as much fun as watching paint dry.
I believe my previous statments have refuted this part.
To the original poster, EVE is not the easiest game to get into. It needs some effort, and you have to find and make your own fun. But once you do, odds are you'll be hooked for awhile.
EVE is the only MMOG that I have actually fallen asleep while "playing". Any game where other players recommend you read a book, watch T.V., do your laundry, make a sandwich, or surf the web while you are on autopilot has something inherently wrong with it. The travel downtime is so over the top I coudn't really ever get into it.
I've tried EVE on 3 different occassions and while I was able to get plenty of things done around the house while "playing" the game, it just didn't grab me. I consider myself an intelligent person and I have desperatly tried to figure out what I'm not getting with EVE but I just can't figure it out. I like PvP and I don't mind being ganked or losing my ship, etc. It just seemed I spent more time on autopilot than doing those types of things.
Obviously some people really love this game. They are very passionate about it and, who knows, you might like it too. Hell, people around here love it so much that its wrist slashingly bad PvE was nominated for best PvE game.
EVE is a time sync to end all time syncs. If you don't have a lot of time to invest when you sit down for a gaming session then its probably not for you. Of course all the EVE fans will tell me I'm full of crap but speaking as someone that isn't drinking the cool-aid this is a fact. It simply takes so long to get from point A to point B that 90% of your time is spent traveling.
I have a younger brother that played EVE and he didn't travel so much. He was in a corp and they spent their time controlling 2 or 3 zones. He mainly would kill other players coming into their zone or mine rocks for his corp in his battleship. Last time I talked to him he had quit EVE.
EVE is the Mac of the gaming world. Not a lot of people play it (relative to the overall market) but those that do love it more than anything in the world. They are generally fanatical and if you don't like the game for any reason then you must not be smart. (see elitist in dictionary for furhter reference) I half expect them to book a flight to Ghana for the big Jim Jones festival.

Did you ever ask yourself WHY you were always traveling. Did you ask yourself if you NEED to do all that traveling? The obvious answer is NO because if you had you might come to realize that you don't NEED to do a lot of travelling in EVE if you don't want to, it's entirely optional. Generally EVERYTHING you need is within 4 or 5 jumps of where you set up your homebase. I barely have enough time to take a washroom break when I'm travelling in EVE, let alone do anything else. Hell even that is dangerous since I live in Lowsec and can be attacked at any time.

I'm sure you meant time sink there. Anyways depending on how you play EVE you can advance easily playing only 1-2 hours a night, unlike high-end gameplay in games like WoW or EQ where you HAVE to set aside 5-6 hours to do many of the raids. The advantage of spending more time in EVE is that you are able to increase you isk and assets more than someone who plays only 1-2 hours a night, which is perfectly reasonable. Also the bigger your group of friends the faster you can attain assets. A group will always be more efficient than a lone player, as it should be.

IF he didn't like that he could have looked for another corp, again the game will not do these things for you, it's up to YOU to make things happen.

Yes. I often asked myself why a mission would make me go 5 to 7 hops one way and then 5 to 7 hops back to the agent. It seems they could just as easily make misssions always be in the same zone as the agent. Or at least a reasonable 1 to 2 jumps away. 1 or 2 jumps would still allow you to be ganked by players/rats which is the only reason I can think of why they want you to travel out of zone for missions.
I don't like 5-6 hour raids in WoW or EQ either. I never proclaimed that those aspects of those games weren't time sinks as well. But at least during a raid you aren't left to simply stare at your monitor. It does require some interactivity with the game itself.
More time in game means more isk. Very reasonable.
My gripe with EVE isn't necearrily the total amount of time I spent traveling its the proportion of time spent traveling vs. doing other stuff even short distances. Although I would rather stare at jump gates and space stations for hours on end than spend another minute orbiting an asteroid watching the mining laser do its thing.
There are lots of players like you that get EVE and I respect that. I'm glad you enjoy it. It is a quality game. It is a great economic sim on top of the PvP. But, for me, the bottom line is that I just wasn't having fun with it as much as I tried.
Eve is a great game. With the new exspansion now out starter players have much better skill point to start. This is a HUGE improvement from when Eve first come out. Eve is a game that "you make it what you want". From mining to ratting there is so much to do. I myself have found great fun running missions. I do lvl 3's solo and right now I do lvl 4s with my corpmate. We all run lvl 4s and switch off. We can spend all night doing this making a huge amount of isk. Yes, at start it can seem a little boring, this is only because you wont have the isk to buy a good ship right off the bat. After the tutorial you can get a good frig. From there its up to you. I would make a plan when you do the char selection do you want mining, combat, or industry. This will affect your starting skills. However you are not limited to this since you can train every skill in the game. Take your time, DO THE TUTORIAL and just have fun.
P.S.
I just got xfire so those hours dont reflect my real game time.
Dear god --do the Tutorial all the way through. If you do not, you will hate this game. Even if you finish it, you may still hate it, but you'll at least understand why you do.
This game takes a lot of time to understand and get into. Definately unique in the MMO market. Not for everyone, but for those who get into it... they reaaaally get into it.
I think the game is overrated slightly, but still solid.
eve is extremely slow but exciting if you like to risk what you have, not like wow or swg with no consequences to death. my beef with the game is 27 days to get a response to a petition, and after 27 days i got a generic mail stating they don't have time to reply but to feel free to try again.
It's a very slow moving MMO, but once you get it out of your head that you don't need to "grind grind grind" like you do in every other MMO, it opens up a whole nother world of conquest and player interaction. It's entirely player driven, so you can do just about anything you want. I personally make it a point to hunt pirates (player pirates).
Yes. I often asked myself why a mission would make me go 5 to 7 hops one way and then 5 to 7 hops back to the agent. It seems they could just as easily make misssions always be in the same zone as the agent. I'm going to take a guess, that you were doing Courier missions. They are missions that effectively turn you into a gofer for the agent(run this here so I don't have to). There are several "professions/Departments" that agents have such as Marketing, Administration, Production, Mining, Security, Internal Security, and several more. Depending on the department, a agent will give out a different ratio of Courier missions to Combat missions. Combat Missions tend to take place at encouters that you warp to that are usually either in system or 1-2 jumps away. Also they involve shooting/getting shot. You probably would have enjoyed doing those a little bit more. Command, Security, and Surveillance agents give you the highest chance or doing combat missions (95%).
Sadly if I had to pick one thing I don't like about eve is the massive amount of information that while isn't nessicary to know, helps a new player out ALOT. Even now with the introduction of the ability to manually warp to 0 km instead of 15km, alot of players don't realize that its faster to manually fly places instead of autopiloting.
There are some things in EVE that are more important than all others. Mostly, it has people that want to Oppress one another. There's Power to be had, and people want it.
Right now I am reading Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. It's one of those reminders of just how fragile civilization and ethics really are. Good people, neighbors, even children are all only so far away from turning on you. Your rights, a farce. Property, no longer a mutual agreement. Your life, expendable.
The urge to hurt, suppress, kill, and even enslave all rapidly emerge in what always becomes a fight for survival. Not far behind that comes cannibalism. (Boil well, and go for the healthy ones.)
EVE is always full of civilized people who aren't quite ready to come to grips with this, which is why they are so easily victimized. You can't really put an objective number on top of that raw emotion and call it content.
In EVE, there's not much desperation, but for many, there's always the realization that there's so little stopping you from being BAD. The more you allow that to sink in, and the more you invest yourself in that, the more you stand to reap from the experience.
If you just want to get by, then that's all you'll ever do. EVE gives you the opportunity to let it all ride though. You can be classy or you can be crass, but eventually all that people think about you is in terms of Power.
Whether you're a mission spoiler, a well-meaning alliance director, a mafia guy, the POS ransomer, or the prober-for-hire, or one of the innumerable support roles that grease the wheels of vice and criminality, anyone can find a niche in the struggle.
You have to learn to make yourself stop wasting time thinking "This is bad, or this is worse." and just think "How can I approach this situation and get mine, and how can I snare these hotshots in my web."
