The Chronicles of Spellborn - The Howling with Within Temptation

Within Temptation formed in Holland around the nucleus of singer Sharon den Adel and guitarist / song writer Robert Westerholt. Their breakthrough album 'Mother Earth' - a wired amalgam of orchestral theatre and anthemic, metallic riffs - conquered the hearts and souls of the rock community of the whole of Europe. The album went gold and platinum in Germany, Holland, and Belgium.

When two creative and artistic minds create something new together, it is bound to be something special and unique. Last February, Spellborn NV announced a special partnership with Within Temptation, a symphonic rock band known for its haunting Celtic melodies and powerful vocals and the fruits of this partnership are now starting to emerge with a special 6 minute long game-trailer for The Chronicles of Spellborn called 'The Howling'.

What do you think of TCoS's partnership with Within Temptation? What do you think of Within Temptations music? And do you think their music would match the game style? Here is the link to their game trailer of The Howling , the trailer isn't bad with the music in my opinion but the video quality is absolutely rubbish.

AS explained in the news post that is not the 'offical' video, google makes it look utter shite if you goto it's offical site http://the-howling.com you will find that it's MUCH better quality.. Also to point out the 'parnership' is only during the promotional aspect of the game so far the devs have hinted that WT may be linked to other apects but it's also been made clear that WT's music doesn't appear nor reflect TCoS' music although that said the music is still very good..

Sorry for sounding harsh but many many people have only just took notice of TCoS purly because of that video and are prejugding and/or assuming things just from that video and not reading into the actal information that predates it (found at http://www.tcos.com ) I'm not saying you havn't yourself however I just wanted to clear imformation up and set things stright here before TCoS gets prejudged via 'chinese whispers' as it is a damn good and unique title thats been ignored by many until now :)

    Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!

I've always loved WT and I'm a big supporter of TCoS so this is a great event for me.

Personally, I think it's a great match for the two. WT has always been original, stiring and striking music and TCoS is exactly that. It's a wonderful promo material and I think it shows the lengths by which this dev group is taking to finally make a different game and a world that will draw you in, in some very special ways.

I certainly hope this garners some good attention for the game, I'm hoping we're all in for a very special suprise when it releases.

While I don't particularly enjoy gothic metal, Within Temptation are quite special, and it's quite a nice video, win win for everyone, except Lacuna Coil.

Within temptation is indeed a great band, lots of good bands come from holland "epica, After Forever, Kamelot" just to name a few. I hope the game matches up with the band.

Within Temptation actually reminds me a lot of the band Nightwish who are a Goth Rock band, both band's music styles are quite similar.

Oh c'mon now ;). I'm sure Lacuna Coil is just fine with Within Temptations success, without or without this video.

Besides, I really wouldn't compare the two. Lacuna Coil is more along the lines of Collide and Sneer, where WT is more closely relatable to NightWish. Either way, all are most excelent bands.

Maybe less visibility during development can be a good thing...
At least you don't have to put up with all those people that bring the game down without even playing it.

EDIT: I was replying to Kremliks post... image

Hehe, that can certainly be true. **coughs** Vanguard **coughs**

On the other hand though, I think it's really a good time for TCoS to get a larger public following as it's been in the shadows of some of the big boys that are being release far to long.

It's one of the few none-IP MMO's comming out that has a genuine uniqueness to it and while nothing is written in stone of course, has the possibility to really do well because of that.

Yes, maybe less hype the better eh? :)

Either way it's a big 'FU' to the 'Game X is gonna be the best thing ever' fanbois who have been ramming certain games in our faces for the past few months while this puppy has been slilently working away the background, I certainly hope they have better luck on the funding then Ryzom did like that it's the only thing that can crush it..

    Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!

The trouble with WT is that their music works much better live; I was lucky to see them performing live last summer. Somehow the individual songs just don't "stick", with a few possible exceptions. That said, I'm sure there's plenty of potential there, considering how this kind of music excels at creating powerful atmospheres and emotions. This song seems like hit material btw, one of their best songs to date - if this is the way they are going, more power to them.

I must admit though that I liked Lacuna Coil at least as much when I saw them live a few months ago. image But yeah I would much rather compare Lacuna Coil to something like Evanescence than WT / Nightwish. I love them all anyway.

Mine keeps stopping at 1:36.  I think they are forgetting the most important part of this music video.  All the shots on the lead singer are close ups.  She is wearing a very good dress that shows some of the good parts.  The shots should all be medium.  With all the closeups and extreme close-ups you see her ugly parts like the makeup starting to bead from sweat.

You can find the full video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcwO0VS9FVo

The 1:36 video is just a short version that they send out to some sites.
The full video has way better scenes. The giant warships and the part where the camera flies over Quarterstone image

Wow! Jade06 and I actually agree on something... I think I just saw a piggy flying past the window image.

About 3 years ago my sister and I heard that Darling Violetta (one of my all time favorites) was going to have a small show on a Saturday night in some small club in Buffalo (she lives in Toronto and I live in Ottawa). So anyways I packed up the little Jetta, picked her up in Toronto and we head State side. This was like in January too so we were just happy there was no snow storm going on.

The show was on a Saturday night, so we drove all through Friday night, found a hotel to crash in and proceeded to figure out wherever the hell this little club was. Well we found it, flirted our asses off to actually get into the show and got in.

Darling Violetta played an hour set and it was amazing, then as if that wasn't enough, Collide came on (my all time favorite band) and I absolutely died with happiness, we had absolutely no idea they were even there to begin with. After an hour and half of them completely amazing everyone in the place they announced they had a special guest band and to our amazement it was Lacuna Coil, who I'd never ever seen before but loved all the same.

So basically here I was with my sister, in this absolutely nothing little club, in a crowd of about 80 or so people, all the band people from Darling Violetta and Collide (I actually got to talk to Karrin and Statik, almost having a heart attack in the process) in the crowd with us all the while listening to Lacuna Coil.

For most people, these bands aren't all that special or big and popular, but for this was one of those night you just absolutely dream about and remember forever.

Since then I've seen Lacuna Coil twice and Collide about a dozen times and every single times it's just absolutely spectacular. Alot of these bands need to be seen live to really appreciate the raw talent that's there. Unlike alot of todays "singers" and "bands" these people have talent, voice are not digitally remastered, they write their own music and they can actually play the instruments you see them playing.

They are a breath of fresh air in a time of pre-packaged, pre-assembled, pretty but clueless bands and pop stars that seems to infest what we call music now days.

Within Temptation is a great band, and I like rock music in my games. I think it's great, it's fresh, and it's new. I hope the game itself will become somewhat good.

    One word:

    Karmacode.

That album was pure pain. Edit to expand: I liked the other three albums, Comalies, In a Reverie and Unleashed Memories, with Karmacode it just seemed they were trying to turn into KoRn.

I'm getting offtopic though. The thing I'm most excited about in tCoS is manual targeting.

Nice! image It reminds me about my introduction to the rave/trance/goa techno scene (which was before I found goth, of course), back then it was still so new; a totally dark warehouse, UV lights, and house full of relatively unknown DJs from Germany and UK who have since gone on to become some of the most well-known techno artists in the world. We had Paul Van Dyk (yeah I'm sure nobody here knows these guys, I'm just going down memory lane...) doing an intimate 3 hour set in a side room, I recall having a nice one-on-one chat with RMB after his performance, and so on...

It all went to hell of course - what started out as the closest thing to a religious experience I've ever had turned into "clubbing", and newcomers focused on drugs and dressing up rather than what it was really all about. Even the music is only a pale shadow of its former self now. Or, to put this in the words of a character in a particular cult classic: "A man has an idea. The idea attracts others, like-minded. The idea expands. The idea becomes an institution. What was the idea? That's what's been bothering me." But at least for a while, it was the most important thing in my life.

Yeah, I was amazed myself when I realised that they were actually singing for real rather than from tape. I have WT's video album, and sadly it seems to me that the stuff they play at concerts comes from tape you see, but Lacuna Coil (and their warmup bands) were singing their hearts out for real.

I feel the exact opposide about WT. I live in the Netherlands, so its pretty hard to miss them, and I heard them live a few time. the music is pretty good...but when she sings live, I just can't help but to think "for the love of god, SHUT UP!" it just hurts my ears.

Music that doesn't hurt your ears live isn't worth listening to anyway, me thinks. image In general, I tend to think that if something doesn't hit you with full force and totally overwhelm you, it's really not worth bothering with at all.

In some bands only their live music is worth listening to though, like Muse is my favourite band but they are so much better live.
