Intel Dual Core and DAoC...(read on)

nthnaounnthnaoun Member Posts: 1,438

I just bought a Dell Intel Dual Core 3Ghz, 1GB RAM, Nvidia Geforce 7300 and my old computer was a Dell Intel Pent. 4, 756RAM, and Nvidia Geforce 5500. My old computer ran DAoC a lot better than my new one. DAoC keep crashing back to the desk top (exiting completely out of the game) and the Techs at DAoC don't really know why. They think it is because I have a Intel Dual Core, which DAoC is not equipped to play. The Techs said that DAoC hasn't been patched with new technology to be able to run with a Dual Core properly. He looked at my computer and said my computer is fine, also recommended that I turn of my Anit-Virus software.

Long story short, I've done all they asked and the game still keeps crashing. Has anyone else experienced this? Since I've gotten my new computer, I've played Asheron's Call, WoW, Shadowbane, FFXI, and a host of other games and haven't had any problems.

The prior complaint some people had was with AMD.  My AMD has
never had any problems but others have.  I believe the issue had
more to do with the chipset than the CPU.  I know there are DAOC
employees that use the Dual Core and they play fine.

One thing that some people who used AMD and had problems with did to
solve the problem was to set the affinity to only one core.  You
might try that with the Intel to see if it works.

DAOC is not optimized to take advantage of dual core technology, but
that is not to same as it not being equiped to play.  Dual cores
are supposed to work the same as single cores in theory and I have
never had any problems.  But I would try setting the affinity and
see if that helps.  You might also look for patches.  I know
for AMD they came out with a patch to optimize its performance, perhaps
there is one for Intel as well.  I know that everyone I knew that
had problems with AMD had their problem solved by the patch.

We tried the affinity thing already and the chipset thing. I'm not sure what patches you speak of though, aside from the Direct X October patch and the graphic drivers patch.

It was something AMD released for this dual core CPU's to improve
performance issues.  This will nto help with Intel, but you could
check their website to see if they have anything.  Another
possibility is to call Dell about it.

    Tried older gfx-drivers?

7300 is NOT a gaming chipset - its worse than the old 5200 in real performance. Ever considered a real gfx card ?

From what I've read and experienced, (because I'm also upgrading), it is specifically what game "engine" a game uses

that allow a game to run on more than one core.

The costs involved in upgrading or updating from an "engine" or existing "engine" to one that allows

for more than one core can often outweight most of the costs involved with people who upgrade

their computers and then quit because they can't play the game.

That's the quick and dirty answer.

Keep reading if you still care.

A DAoC rep. would either not know this (some people are kept out of the tech loop)

or would send you on a wild goose chase rather than tell you that you better think about quitting because

the game's "engine" doesn't support your new hardware. This is because he or she would

probably know most rational people would choose their hardware over the game, if already purchased.

So, you go on and on getting frustrated trying new things.  And in turn, DAoC still gets money every month to

    pay bills.

Basically the costs DO NOT outweight the disadvantages at this moment. And this is a very hard fact

to face when you've spent years inside a game like this building a character.  The company simply

does not take steps to keep up with technology. And in today's world, that is a double edged sword,

technology is advancing sooo rapidly that how can they and still have enough for their next expansion pack .... I mean .... bills.

And ofcourse the user sees a much better computer out there they can afford even 2 years later (which is a while in today's

age) and goes and buys it.

Mythic does not have a big sign on the herald saying, "We do NOT support dual anything!!!!" because that would

undoubetly steer people away since you almost have to try to find a computer that isn't dual something these

    days.

These games take roughly 2 years to make, heck these days, 2 years is a lifetime as far as technology goes.

And as far as it being just a patch ... come on, really ... they still haven't fixed Thanes yet and that's a problem

they can solve by patching the game "engine"; do you really think they're gonna fix a problem as advanced

as this even if it involves just a patch?! They've come out with 2 expansions since dual cores have hit the market

they either think the average user almost never upgrades their computer or they deny the existance

of dual core because it's more cost effective to do so.

So enevitably your emotion go as follows:
    ------>  ------>

    AIN'T IT A VICIOUS CYCLE!!!

"The succubus hits you in the nuts for 550 damage."
-Wow, she really knows how to suck D!

DAOC supports dual core as much as almost any other game does.  It is not optimized for it however, meaning that it is not written currently to divide the processing power between the two cores to take full advantage of it.

Yet, if you read the thread you would have realized that this was not his problem at all so why you are trolling I have no idea.
