Questions I can't get answered.

Right off the bat I have to say I will not play this game at release because everything I think I'll like about it is the same stuff SOE promised for EQ2 (trade caravans... housing market... players mattering in the world...) and they broke almost every pre-release promise down to the letter. That being said, I have some questions that I can't get answered anywhere:

1. Will this be a "one-world" game like EVE or Second Life? Or will there be multiple servers with new ones opening later?

2. Will this game have the same old "hit the attack button" combat system as WoW and EQ or will we finally get to actually fight? I have to say I'm sick of attack-button style MMORPGs. Let the stats affect how much damage your sword does, or if you can pierce armor with it. Hitting Q and dinking with the same pattern of skill/talent/spell buttons over and over again is boring. I've done it for five years now. I feel bad for the people who've done it for 10.

3. Is there conquerable territory? How does this work with PVP?

4. Does anyone know what the level grind will be like? What kind of time sinks are built into this game?

I've looked through a number of interviews and most of what I find is either about mounts or Sigil's relationship with SOE. I don't care about Sigil's relationship with SOE. I want to know if this will be a cool game. Though, I have to say, I would probably pre-order this game if SOE wouldn't have blown the EQ 2 launch so badly.

Thanks,

B

your real combat is not going to happen while the internet still has lag.  That is all we need thousand of people hitting the internet because their connection sucks and it got them killed.

Frankly, Age of Conan sounds more like the game you are looking for.

Reactionary-based combat in a game doesn't work very well.  It's not like people employ "skill" to win in those types of situations.  Usually, what happens is that people discover the "easiest" (or cheapest) way to fight people and they repeat that over and over again.  For example, in WoW, people discovered that by strafing around people and jumping around, you can greatly diminish their ability to hit you.  This is not "skill".  It's some idiot on a keyboard holding down the same buttons over and over again because he knows it allows for an unfair advantage.  If you want to play games where "skill" dictates your ability, go play some FPS games like Battlefield 2 (but even those have so many exploiters it's sickening).

MMOs are role-playing games, and often are more likely to incorporate strategic combat than "twitch" combat.  The fact that SWG tried something like this and it outraged most of their fans should keep other developers from making the same mistake.

Yes there will be multiple servers. Sigil has hinted of alternate ruleset servers and have stated there will be pvp. We wont know full details till after the NDA is lifted.

Combat will be a series of starting moves, bridges, and finishing moves. Along with that you will have to decide do I continue with my combo or do I dodge or counter a spell incoming or do I rescue another player that has gotten agro. It is supposed to be much more involved than click and loot.

With as big a world as Vanguard encompasses that is in itself is a time sink. From what I've heard they are still tweaking the grind. From what I can gather from the thousands of posts is you can level fairly quickly if that is all you want to do. But if you want to experience all the game has to offer including the best loot it will be consideralby more involved than WOW or EQ2.

According to the Devs they have 7 years worth of content story boarded. How much of that comes into existance is yet to be seen.

Guess IMO to sum up what I have gleened about Vanguard is that there will be MUCH more content than any MMO has ever had. There will be similarities to both WOW and EQ as well as the MUD's they grew up with. They have taken what worked and left out what didnt and put this all togehter in the world they dreamed about playing in. How we choose to experience that content is up to us.

BTW for the record Brad and Jeff left SOE before EQ2 and have stated many times it was not their vision of the successor to EQ1..
