Wow harmful to kids (continued)

I cannot find the posting nor would I bother as people plainly put their opinions that I was being paranoid.

Funny thing is I posted the stuff on their forums and I was outright ignored.

Right up until a parent quoted me and told me they was pulling their kid out of the game.

Now I got banned from posting til after Xmas. Wow when no one listened I was ignored Now someone does and I get banned.

I love it when someone tries to shush the public up to make money off of other people's kids.

Least some parents got word and took their kids out of the game. The banning was worth it to me.

Realmreaver formally of EQ, SWG, FFXI and WoW.

Malis/Pirotess of PSO.

Some named of Diablo 1 and 2 =)

Grendel Kinguard of GW.

Well, it's not really specific to WoW imo, but to Virtual Reality in general.

The way I see it is that the only reason why people are attacking World of Warcraft right now is that it's the most popular MMO at this point.

This same shit happened with Everquest when it was all the big noise.

So, it's not really anything new. And to be honest, it's not the games fault for whatever happens to kids, it's the parents fault for not monitoring their kids time online.

So yeah, posting crap like that is pointless.

    Groovy.

WoW is harmful to kids? Right ...

For the uneducated parent, Blizzard has implemented Parental Controls. You can find the information in the FAQ section.

    Quote from the FAQ:
The Parental Control feature allows a secondary login point from which the parent or guardian of a minor is able to control login time down to 30 minute intervals.

iv said this once, iv said this twice, iv said this a million times, mmorpgs are not for kids, not because they cant handle it or because mmorpgs are too violent for them, its because kids ruin mmorpg communities, usually when u come accross a noob of any sort, he turns out to be a kid, when ever u get flamed it usually turns out to be a kid, if mmos were full of people 18+ it would be much better, no i dont want it to be all "hello good sir how are you today" i still want the "u got pwned nub cake" but its just that kids take things too far and there minds arnt mature enough to cooperate with older people!

Yeah, it was all we heard about for months when that kid killed himself after his character died (or something along those lines).

Of course, that's all EverQuest's fault. It couldn't POSSIBLY be that these people are already messed up when they start playing these games.

    /rolleyes

WoW is half as deep as EverQuest was, and I'm having more fun playing browser-based games than grinding for that next purple. People play games to GIVE themselves choices, not take them away. If I wanted another job, I'd go get one that paid well instead of asking for my credit card. These people have nobody to blame but themselves.

WoW is harmfull to kids/human beings in the same way MacDonalds is harmfull to human beings, which is to say anything done in excess will be harmfull.

Moderation is key with any activity, which of course includes online gaming. If a parent is not "parenting" and letting his or her child play any game endlessly then it is bound to do some sort of harm, whether that be physcially, emotionally, socially. The same goes with an adult, if that person is not willing to be "self check" his or her priorities, things can and do tend to get out of control.

It's all about personal and parental responsibility.

That's the problem with folks, like the OP; personal responsibility is a foriegn concept.

Any activity can lend itself towards addictive behavior. World of Warcract is no different from previous or past MMOs. In the least, Blizzard has provided tools to help mitigate the potential for addictive behiors: parental controls, rested xp, etc.

Well, I am 55 years old and I play WoW every night.  My 15 year old has a level 60 Dwarf warrior and my 13 yr old has a level 60 nightelf Hunter.  Both their toons are decked out in the best gear in the game.  Yes, they MC'd over and over, yes they PvP'd over and over.......with all that said..they both go to Christian Schools and they both have straight A's in all their grades.  Both are basketball players on their school team and both are captains of their team.

NOW.............How is WoW bad for them?

God, we've run this over in my Mensa group and it's such a dead horse, but no one ever drops it...

Entertainment products are factually not harmful to kids or anyone, for that matter.  The "studies" done that have shown "evidence" that they are harmful are biased, flawed, and politically backed with a conservative agenda of censorship.

There is no entertainment activity that is harmful to a person or causes them to become unstable- any such problems that arise are not due to the entertainment product, but instead directly contributable to poor parenting and/or an already existing mental illness inherent in the user of said entertainment product.

If you took all games away, the people having problems "because of gaming" would instead be having problems "because of television" or "because of gardening" or "because of working on customizing their car".  Activities are not the cause- they are simply a catalyst.

Good parents keep full track of their kids' behavior, activities and maintain control over them.  If I had been a kid getting into problems over WoW in any way, my dad would have taken out his 'black belt' (not martial arts, but dress belt) and threaten to beat me within and inch of my life.  He never would have hit me, but as a kid I didn't know that and therefore was subservient to his wishes.  If I had continued, they simply would have taken my computer away or otherwise TOLD me what to do, and I would have listened.

There are too many poor parents out there who simply do not know what they are doing, and wish to pass the blame of their poor parenting skills onto others, and see a large and successful product like this as a great scapegoat.

    End of the truth.

I agree with that 80%.  I am very conservative. Online gaming, I think, is healthy for my kids.  It gives them goals to achieve and promotes common sense.  I still encourage their school work and their sports.  It is a balancing act.

I know some parents who use these type of games to keep the kids out of their hair.  This is very bad.  It is this type of parenting that makes the game look bad.

When I was younger the "bad video game" was Atari, then it was arcade games, then nintendo, then.......  It will never stop.  I remember when they said playing D&D pen/paper was very bad, devil worship .... There will always be something people complain about that is bad for our kids.  The kids that go nuts playing games, would have went nuts with drugs, or alcohol or D&D or fill in the blank.

What would you prefer your kids to be doing?  Watching cartoons?  Not Roadrunner or Tom & Jerry, isnt that supposed to be bad for kids?  Maybe you would prefer your kids to be running around town, thieving, gangbanging, doing drugs ....?

It is not bad for them because YOU are actually doing your job... being a parent.  Unlike most americans I'm sorry to say.  image

Too often parents use a MMOG (or tv, console game, etc) as a babysitter and then wonder why their kid grows up with a few "issues" when dealing with other people.

I remember the event with EQ1.  The man was living alone, was diagnosed with mental illness (forget which) and had not been taking his meds for weeks.  He logged onto EQ1, someone ingame said something to him (probably insulting) and he logged off and then blew his head off.  Mom stopped by to see how he was, found the EQ1 Character select screen on the PC and his gray matter sprayed on the wall.  So of course she said it was SOE's fault.  image
