I have to say that I'm impressed by the amount of money they gathered. Its sad to see a game die like that. It wasn't exactly the best thing since sliced bread, but it was quite a well done game. I hope it will live.

Thats easy, not enough people actually PAID to play the game. Its one thing to say and vote its a great game, its another to shell out a monthly sub for it.

Yeah, it's got a problem being a great game but not really capitalizing on any niche market. It kinda seems like it's the WoW of Niche... but being niche, ppl want specific things and Ryzom doesn't really give any of that.
I found that on the EVE forums and CCP Turned it down. If you want more info, there is a post about it in the EVE forums here.
I thought Saga of Ryzom was kinda retarded in terms of gameplay. It removes a decent amount of flavor with the "design your own skills" system that breaks everything down very mechanically. Not a whole lot of flourish to add to things to make things, well, "cool". Combine that with how advancement consisted of, "Grind until level" (especially so for crafting, which involves crafting a bunch of useless crud from whatever is cheapest to get your hands on just to level crafting skills up) and you get a pretty, but not terribly interesting MMORPG.
While I will regret Ryzom having to be sold. If this goes GPL, that would be crazy in a very good way, hopefully people would jump all over it. Even the more technically skilled people could maybe help out and create something uber.
But it is all just a pipe dream until/IF it happens. Hopefully they put them on the same server farm in Westwood Mass as DDO is on, that way I can rock it with like 12 ping.
Ryzom is pretty good and soemwhat innovative tbh, but it misses certain essential things.
It's right in between the mainstream and games like Eve Online, where content comes from players more then developers.
I've played Ryzom, and while it was fun it also missed that 'hook' taht keeps you coming. In games with the ambitions Ryzom had, that hook needs to be the playerbase and what it can do within the game. Ryzom never was able to show that it could deliver that.

I was going to reply with something well thought out to explain to you what you fail to understand but then i noticed you've racked up almost 1000 hours of Guild Wars. You're hopeless.

And this is the proof that the ratings on MMORPG.com are completely flawed. If all the people who rate Ryzom highly were actually playing it, as one would expect, the game would not be tanking. Either a few dishonest persons have made hundreds of accounts to highly rate Ryzom, or MMORPG.com is propping it up.
I am less inclined to think MMORPG.com is intentionally faking Ryzom's high ratings, though the admin's motivations for money via goldselling adverts does question the integrity of this site. But I prefer to believe it is simply an outdated ratings system because it never wipes older ratings. Games change over time and their ratings should reflect their current appreciation in an evolving environment of new competitors, technological improvements, and ideas.

I had to laugh out loud after reading the quoted post. The crafting and skill systems, IMO, were the best part of the game, not to mention the sense of adventure that EVERYTHING in the game carried with it. IMO, the part of the game I found most lacking was combat.

It's ranked #1, tied with other games. The only reason it's shown as #4 is because of the alphabetical sorting. Erm... it's not alphabetically sorted Of those games with an 8.3 ranking it has the lowest hidden decimal value.
Look at the games below 8.3 that are tied, they are not alphabetical.
TBH Ryzom's fate doesn't surprise me in the least. It had some really neat concepts and ideas but the gameplay was pretty dry. I have loved every other sandbox MMORPG I have played... Ryzom, however, I just couldn't get interested in. No particular reason I can put a finger on. Just the combination of the pieces in ryzom didn't add up to a 'fun' experience for me, and many others who tried it.
The company, jfyi, has been in bankruptcy protection since shortly after Ryzom released. The game has never *ever* cut a profit.

Eh, like many people have said: It's a game that can be respected for being good, but it just doesn't have that thing you need to keep you coming back for more.
I've always loved SoR and kept an active account for a long time just because I believed in the game itself. The community was great, the development team was one of the best around and it had lots of charm. I still genuinely believe that SoR had the best environments of any MMO out there, ever.
All that being said there was some fundemental flaws with the game that never were addressed and sadly hindered the games growth over time. Little to no growth in a story line which was supposed to be dynamic, features that took forever to come into play, little to no "actual" reason to play and a huge lack of focus on the main lands made it difficult to have any clear goals while playing.
Ryzom Ring was unfortunately flawed and not enough to attract enough people and IMO it was the wrong way to go for a first official expansion.
Either way, theres no denying it's a sad day and I hope it's not the end of MMO's of substance, which SoR most defanitely was.

I think there is a problem with the voting scheme. Personally, you should only get a limited number of votes like 3 or 5. This way people can't just vote on everygame.

Technically, Asheron's Call 2 never had an official expansion. They were all about moving the storyline ahead on a monthly basis, not a once per year basis. Still the game left a lot to be desired thus it closed.
SoR won't die for multiple reasons. 1. Plenty of big publishers will look into buying it out, netting a AAA quality MMO that is among the top rated in the world for a small price, 2. There are enough current players that even a smaller company could drum up more players given the proper circumstances, 3. If a company doesn't buy it out the fans will as is evident from the "Free Ryzom" project. It'll go open source and then people will run their own SoR servers legally!

I second that. I tried SoR 2 or 3 times, and found it to be a pretty but uninteresting game. Sad to hear this game go. It was a solid game, but not for me.

both times I played it wasn't too impressed, but hopefully doesn't die. Mmorpgs that die when people still want to play really bad.
