I tried entering the frontiers once, only to walk about 100 yards from the gates to be killed in 2 hits by some purple monster which I was assuming was some form of guard, so I turned around and forgot about it.

The frontiers are not for you.  You should have read more on the RvR system.  The content there is 45+.  You need to go to the level specific battlegrounds instead.  The best choice is at level 24 when you go to Thid.

Guards look like guards not mobs.  Enemy guards will never be close to the entrence.  I am surprised there were any mobs near the entrence like this, but perhaps there are.  I never walk around NF from the entrence and use the teleporters instead.

The battleground I had access to was empty, it was the first one that starts giving realm points, too, apparently.

The level 20-24 BG is almost always busy unless you go out at odd times.  This is not the first one that gives rps though.

As a veteran of this game for almost 6 years now, I can say the population is definitely declining, but it doesn't seem to have affected the 'what can I do and when' aspect.  There are still lots of things available, and a lot of alliances looking for people to attend their outings.

On the topic of battlegrounds (specifically speaking from a Classic Server player's position), the first active battleground is Lion's Den.  Level 5-9 characters are in there on a daily basis kicking each other's butts.  At that same level, 5-9, there's Demon's Breach which is just as active as Lion's Den ... but without the siege weapons that everyone gets killed in one shot by in Lion's Den! (Yes, I know, at some point here soon or recently, they've removed siege weapons from Lion's Den.)

In my opinion, the only down-side of this game is the customer service.  On that topic, I'll leave it to the individual to judge.

If you do jump into DAoC, even if just for the trial, stop by Hibernia (Ector is where I play Hibs) and I'll be more than happy to help you get started in the right direction with a decent suit of level 10 gear (what we call a full set of aurulite armor, trinkets, and weapons).

Just keep an eye out for Depatchy-Ector and mention this post!
