I like guild wars... it's a fun little game that I play when I feel the desire for a 'fantasy' "mmo" fix. It's got just enough to sate the need to play a fantasy style game then I can happily go back to EVE. Since it doesn't have a monthly fee I can enjoy it when I want and if I don't feel like playing for several weeks it doesn't bother me at all My only big complaints about Guildwars are: 1) Guild's don't seem to last very long. Every guild I have joined has vanished within a month or so. 2) No way for players to easily sell items to one another. Sure you can auction, etc, but without player vendors it is VERY difficult to sell items to one another so the economy really sucks.
Other than that it's a nice little game that I play when EVE is down for patching/maintenence or when I just feel the urge to play a fantasy setting game. I got both the original (Prophecies) and 1st sequel (Factions) for free. I may eventually get nightfall but since I haven't finished either of the first two yet it'll probably be a while.

I'm glad to see a rational person who actually takes it for what it is rather than what it iisn't. An interesting thing they did with the new party serach was also use it for trading so you can list what you are selling rather than spam the trade channel. Its not a an auction house or a vendor but its a nice elegant little idea I didn't think of.

1 - thats becose there are 3 million acounts sold , you dont find good guilds around the corner. im not going to say my guild is the best , but we are preaty solid. if you stop playing for more then 1 month you might get kicked for inactive becose we have full house , 100 members , we need to kick the inactive ones to make room for new ones. you are welcome to join us , wisper me IGN neoteo ex animo
2-the new search window made a lot of stuff much easyer to deal with , you can see people now even chat in local !!!!
Guild Wars is a good game. It may not be everybody's cup of tea, but I think most people will agree with me when I say the following things:
It has passable, if limited in breadth, PVE content with good visuals. It has an in-depth and unique skill system. It allows for a greater degree of character experimentation than other MMORPG's. It features some of the best arena PVP of any MMORPG. It features what might be considered the best and most streamlined guild ladder and competition system of any PVP MMORPG, with the caveat that this PVP is limited to arenas.
For some people, these features make it awesome. Of course, for those who like MMORPG's with a large gameworld, emphasis on PVE, or advancement based in grinding or itemization, the game's strong points don't really make up for what they're missing. In the end, I think the game is good at what it does, and the rest is simply preference.
That said, while these numbers are accurate, don't assume by default that NCSoft considers this game a success. It's very difficult for me to get an accurate reading of their feelings as a publisher, but I get the impression that while they view Guild Wars as a success, they expected more from it in terms of revenue-generation. On the other hand, I'm fairly certain when I say that other publishers are not impressed by Guild Wars's numbers. I doubt we're ever going to see another game with the same business model in the near future, honestly.
Incorrect. Blizzard only counts active accounts. Please don't make me prove it ONCE more , I'm tired of copy/pasting those press releases.
They count "active accounts" as anyone who either has a current subscription or who's characters still exist from a previous subscription. Those asterix are a pain aren't they? WoW is still huge in MMO terms, but not in the whole of computer gaming.

" World of Warcraft customers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or purchased a prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the installation box bundled with one free month access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as customers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Customers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules."
It really doesn't hurt to do just a bit of research. As soon as the account subscriber has ran out, it is not included. it doesn't matter if a character is still there or not.
1. Guild Wars is an mmorpg. However, I for one do not tire of this discussion.
2. Guild Wars is different than other MMOs with persistent worlds, and I never tire of the GW vs. other game [WoW] discussions either.
3. I have a theory that people who like golf are more likely to like GW because they both share that element of (in the end) playing against yourself. No, not playing with yourself - that is for WoWers Just kidding, I couldn't help it, lol, WoW is a good game too, just different. Anyway, I think my point stands about the satisfaction GW delivers being very self directed.
4. Congrats Anet on 3 mil. Here's looking forward to the next 3!!!
By Dave Kosak | April 28, 2004 With awe-inspiring graphics, a unique gameplay mechanic, and no monthly fees, Guild Wars is a massively multiplayer online fantasy RPG that distinguishes itself from the crowd. Did we mention it's fun?
let me take the good part out
Guild Wars is a massively multiplayer online fantasy RPG
Who cares? It's a fun team-based action RPG. Admittingly, I too haven't played in a long time, but that is only because other games keep grabbing my attention. Not to mention the fact that I'm an idiot and bought Factions first. I played the tests of Prophecies and Nightfall and they are much better.
I guess you voted with your money as is your right to do and cancelled your subscription thus denying them any more revenue from you....Oh wait....There is no subscription.
It doesnt matter if you play or not, you bought the game..

Could you please point out the massively part about GW? Thank you.

...Gring in Guild Wars? WHAT? I have played single player rpg:s that have a "bigger grind" that GW.
I can understand thinking GW not counting as a mmorpg, but grind doesnt exist in any kind of meaningfull way in GW. (You can grind/farm titles or gold so you can buy rare weapon/armor-skins, but all that has zero impact on PvE and PvP).
So what grind exacly are talking about?
Originally posted by Gameloading Could you please point out the massively part about GW? Thank you.
Its a corpg, the official faq even says so (dont even think ArenaNet ever called it a mmmorpg).
GW & "D&D Online" fulfill the requirements for being listed at mmorpg.com, the discussion for being a mmorpg or not has a few dozen or so threads & I cant bother to drag up old & new arguments for either side.
Do they just count Nightfall? Or the Orignal Guild Wars? Cause I know they count all the expensions has different games, which is why here at MMORPG.com there's three listings. So if they count them all toghter, yea it would be easy to get 3 million people buying the game. Cause really if your counting some people 2 or 3 times it adds up.
Edit: I know my spelling is messed up and I might not make much sense. Sorry, not correcting it yet. Just got off an all-night christmas eve workfest. So I'm tired and just surfing the web a bit before crashing in bed.

He probably just killed mobs and ignored the quests. the grind in GW takes a good amount of time if you don't do the quests

3 million units sold, do notice it does not say accounts. Still if its only 500k people playing thats not too bad, there are lots of online-games with fewer players than that. Because there is no monthly fee its hard to say how active the account holders really are.
(For the rating list nowadays all GW-games count as one since some people complained about it, CoV/CoH still count as one iirc. Game listing has GW still as 3 seperate games).

Guildwars is an OK game i play it occasionally when im not playing eve as i do love fantasy.
Now i like the fact ti has no subscription thats good.
I also like the graphics as they are pretty good and much better than another game i tried [wow]
I dont like the instancing tho i play these games to socialise.
IF horizons ever gets fixed tho [too many problems for me to specify] i will play that instead despite the subscription.
jokes on you!
imho not a spectacular number, afterall 75% of them is kids that aren't allowed to pay monthly subscriptions with a credit card.
I pay more for games that don't have childy communities! afterall I do play games to get relaxed
The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
GW is not an mmo, thank you.
It's better be hated for who you are, than loved for who you aren't.

Then why have GW's devs stated its not an mmo then.
