Think of it this way.. Spending your time in World of Warcraft on a buggy, always crashing server would get old after a while, I'm sure. I would rather just wait untill retail so that when it does come out theres something to celebrate about. All those people in beta wont get that satisfaction. Its not like they get a big headstart. We will probly get more information from them than we would like. Yeah they might have a better idea of where things are but dont forget that there is also going to be an open beta. All i want to know is if Shaman or Druid would make a better Tauren so i know what to do when I start. So in a way, i feel like i gained something by not getting in beta. Its a win/win situation, and i won! WoW what a coindedence...
Uhhh first of all. People who got beta emails can't play the game yet. It says clearly we have to wait a few weeks till they get us started. Unless your alpha.
Then where are all these screenshots coming from? and i saw a webcam with someone playing WoW Beta yesterday. You must have read it wrong. Maybe it was talking about playing phase 2 cause that is out in a couple weeks.
viet you obviously dont know anything about wow beta, you were obviously picked for phase TWO, people picked for phase 1 HAVE started, but you must wait until its over.

Obviously you need to read more of the FAQ's, Dev comments, and web magazine reviews. Far as game crashes, well at E3 they had 3 machines running it, and only one of them crashed and that was only once. As for buggy, just because it's retail wouldn't mean anything in the world of mmorpg's. I beta tested SB, and when that hit retail all they did was basicaly ADD more bugs by tossing in new features etc right before release without giving the beta testers time to test them.
Though Blizzard games do have a high standard of excellence when it comes to releasing a complete game with little to no flaws.
As for not getting into beta. I'd be pysched to get in to help find bugs, and fix balance issues and give feedback that's what I love about beta. I'd also play horde in beta, since when release comes out I'm going to be Alliance. That way everything would still be new to me, in a sense.
Oh well *raises his glass* here's to open beta.

At first I was kinda upset by it but then I learned that right now they are only testing Alliance characters and there is a level cap of 30. I'm going to be an Undead Warlock and I'm fine waiting a week or two until one of the later phases have the Horde (if I do get an email...). Besides right now they are working on the bigger bugs in the system, by then it should be a bit more stable. Although as it is I've heard this isn't many problems with the Beta as it is.

Uhh first of all Viet Boy, you are wrong. People who got a phase 1 beta letter are already playing. People were downloading it Friday, and you would know that if you would check the beta boards.
So, as of right now, Alpha AND Phase 1 Beta people are playing.

I know, I just didn't know that their was different phases till later on. And I thought only their was 1 phase out so sorry to confuse.

Thats normally why they add more people to beta. So they can stress the servers and fix stuff like that. I hear that in alpha with the limited number of people they had testing, the servers were doing fine, but as soon as they added more people they started getting crashes. Not to mention they have to tune areas for set amount of people also.
Being part of something that may become a huge hit and be able to contribute to the over all play quality is something, or atleast I think so. Sure you may not get your name in the credits but you still have the satisfaction of knowing you helped in some form shape the game.
Myself, I really like beta testing games.

From the looks of this post you have not been in beta before.
1) beta's are SUPPOSED to be buggy 2) Blizzards games are always well prepared 3) Your getting this game for FREE when you are a beta tester, why would you possibly NOT want to get into the beta, you have nothing to lose.
I wouldnt make that assumtion btw. Ive done beta on various projects and i often think "i wish i had waited" yet i contued to write reports and email bugs and defects every day until retail release.
Im actually NOT applying for certain mmos or game etc for beta testing now since they are the ones i really want to play and very often it does spoil the overall feeling of newness and fun, once its retail.
Testing can be fun but sometimes its just a drag ( 4x exp for testers then retail normal exp and bleh exp is slow etc.)
I hope WoW isnt too late and over hyped by time of release
Umm. . . many of you aren't taking into account that with the onslaught of mmorpg's, beta's arent really beta's anymore, they are marketing tools. Look at how easy it is to get into a beta now, compared to the infancy period of UO, AC, and EQ. These games are a hell of alot more polished upon open beta then they were 5 years ago. Some of them (take KO and L2) are just mirrors of complete games.
I do see his pont tho... I mean sometimes betsa testing a game can ruing the fun of actually playing it. Its just like if you created a game all by ureself, knew the ins and outs of the game and how it developed. I doubt you could play that game for very long without getting bored.
Basically we all want World of Warcraft and are willing to do anything to get in as earlier as possible, but if you join too early it could ruin the end-game appeal of the game.
Beta Tested: Lineage 2, Ryzom, City of Heroes, RYL, EverQuest 2 World Of Warcraft European Truly Loved: World of Warcraft
I'm still unsure, myself. The pro of being in beta for me would be having a chance to give meaningful input on the games development and help ensure that it will be a great mmorpg. However I also want to wait until release so that I don't spoil any of it by seeing even just a partialy incomplete world. Since your character will be wiped before release (undoubtably), it's not like you'll be getting much of a head start. I have decided though that if I get into beta, be it open or closed. I'm making a horde character, since at release I plan to play Alliance. That way I'd just learn how WoW works, but the land, the quests, just about everything would still be new.

I played beta for the Diablo II expansion LOC and I loved it. The game was basically complete, they were testing balance and stress loading.
Blizzard hasn't failed me yet, that is unusual for a gaming company.
