Ok after all the disappointments of games that were released or not that were supposed to be in 06'. I am hoping for a better turn out of mmorpg's in 07. How many of you think it is looking promising from what is being made now?
Do not be so picky and remember that diamonds are often found in the rough. It's not so much as meeting a standard, it was just an off year for MMOs. Take Auto Assult as an example of this. A good idea that had issues with a very long beta to the simple fact that each race had the same class with different names. Netdevil tried so hard to get this game going they may of created the greatest WOW Clone yet, but that is not what people wanted. I'm going to try this game again soon, and I hope they have made some changes for the better, and have stepped away from the WOW template.
People like new experiances, thats why Guild Wars NF and Eve are going strong. They have offered things that WOW can not. Face it, even with 8 million++ players WOW is lacking in many things. Both of the above games are a change of pace that WOW, and many other MMOs can't offer.
As for 2007, its looking more like either Revenge of the WOW, Vanguard strikes back, or it's time to go sailing and do some real Pirating!
Yeah, maybe some of us want more bang for our bucks. You sound like we should all just settle for the garbage that has been coming out. That is fine for you if that makes you happy. Go ahead and spend your bucks any way you want. That is your choice. As for the rest of us. We hold the right to spend or NOT spend ours as we want.
Yes, I expect more then just good graphics and a hack-n-slash with no direction. I want a game that has a good community. Things to do besides kill stuff or craft. I want player housing to stash my stuff in, to decorate and for role playing. I want fluff and loads of it with plenty of storage space for it all. Game play means a lot. So does the meat of a game.
Anymore I'm just playing the UO private shards since I like custom rules to that game, and the pre-UOR publish as well.
Currently, I'm deciding between AC1 [the first MMO I played a long time back] and DAOC. I just wish the folks at Turbine would update the GFX engine in AC1 to at least a comparable quality as AO or even EQ1, geez!

Ok but, you must understand that the folks at Turbine are busy now with making The Lord of the Ring Online. I suggest you do as many of us are now. Look around and try/test as many as you can untill you find one you like. Of course (sad to say), there realy isn't much out there at this time.
Hey I have an idea... Play a computer game that isn't an MMO. *OMFG*
I know, I didn't think they existed either; but they do! Fable, Neverwinter Nights, Oblivion, KOTOR and many others... Just go to EB Games or any other store that sells games for that matter and look around, chances are good that you will find something you are at least mildly interested in. Now just think how great it will be when you won't have to put up with the annoying 11 year old kiddies and the 1337 |-|4X0R5.
Watcha talking about? This was an awesome year for free mmo's with cash shops. I think GPotato's Stock went up a whole $.30 which is alot in the stock market world. Many casual games also hit the market like Golfing. Now I am no golfer, but the golf mmo's can be pretty fun. Also Granado Espada was released in Asia, and Ragnarok Online 2 rescently had a preview event in Korea. Not sure how the gameplay was yet, but the screenshots were very re-assuring.
However, I agree it was a terrible year for p2p western games. I had high hopes for DnD online and Auto Assault. Looks like quite a few others slated for next year are also making the same mistake those 2 games did. Releasing a visibily unfinished and unpolished product that only a small minority of players can play with little to no advertising.
06 was bad for mmorpg's but 07 looks maybe the best year yet for mmorpg's, i cant wait for Stargate Worlds and Star Trek online, been waiting for a good sifi mmorpg for a vary long time.

Perfectly said Mozis. 2006 may have sucked a bit for MMOGs, but it was a decent year for shooters (great if you're a console player) and an outstanding year in terms of RPGs and strategy games. The problem is, many MMOG players don't want to buy any other games but MMOGs. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "oh, I would pick up that cool new game but I've got WOW" or "I save so much money by paying $15 a month versus buying a new game a month." While I understand the sentiment, MMOG players do need to branch out a little bit. If a great game comes out in a genre you enjoy, please please please stop raiding the same goddam instance for the millionth time and try something different. Your inner gamer will thank you.
I have been following a few P2P for over a year and longer that are slotted for release in 07'. I hope that at least one of those is a good game. Sure I tried GPotatoe games along with many other Korean games this past year. I need more meat to a game then just killing stuff or crafting though. I said that earlier. Sorry for the redundancy.
Dark Solstice, and The Lord of the Ring Online are looking the best to me so far. I like games with strong communities and role playing.

The next "good MMOs" IMO are going to be either:
WAR (unlikely, yet can't dismiss them, yet)
Aion (same as WAR)
HJ (more likely, but when?)
Stargate (gonna rock most likely)
BioWare MMO's (by 2010? Yet, it is the best guess as a WoW successor)
So 2007? I have no hope for 2007, yet I would really enjoy been surprised.

Age of Conan comes out in 2007, so it will undoubtedly be a great year simply for that reason
vanguard does too, but that wont have quite as profound an impact
Huxley should be coming out, and that should be amazing if all goes as planned
and im not sure about any of the other games are going to be good, maybe WAR but im not so sure if that will be any good
"200X sucked! It was the worst year for MMORPGs. I can't wait til the great games coming up next year release. They will totally be the pwnzers!"
It gets really redundant if you ask me. Once a few of these games get released in 2007 you'll add those to the list next December.
"WAR sucked! Its PvP system was way lacking in the loot department. Its just another WoW clone."
"Vanguard? God what a grindfest, they should update the playing style to 2007, not 1998 lolzers!"
I don't know though, perhaps I'll be proven wrong this year...
P.S. I am not talking about people solely on this board, more of a MMORPG community as a whole in general.
Eternally mine,

The MMO gaming blog I write for.
2006 was not the worst year for new mmorpg's.
1979 saw zero mmorpgs released (p2p or f2p).
Me i'm going to stick with old games that have been updated alot
