Your assertion, made with no supporting evidence, amde me curious, so I did a quick check. While not a perfect indicator, the number of posts for a certain game made on a forum is at least a general indicator of interest in the game. This may or may not translate into numbers of fans, but at least it must have some correlation.
I looked at the general forum on morpg.com for the 3 top rated games (by mmorpg's poll), EVE, Guild Wars, and EQII.
I found it very interesting that GW had 50% more threads in the general fourum than EVE, and EQII had 100% more.
Given this, I would hazard to say that the reason for the sweep has more to do with game quality than with # of fanbois on mmorpg.com.
That's my opinion, you are of course welcome to disagree.

You wish.
Yeah I do wish people could deal with it but not everyone is as well equipped mentaly to deal with these facts as most EVE players!
EVE rocks so much all other MMOs drown in its wake, it's official!

On EvE's front page they purposely send all their fans here to vote so really its no suprise they won. I always said the polls and ratings here on this site seemed a little suspect. but like someone stated mmorpg caters to a hardcore mmorpg fanbase that likes to try a lot of different mmos. anyway im going to try this EvE cause I do hear good things bout it really. so they probabvly deserve a lot of good scores although u would think another MMO would win another of its categories.

But the difference is that EVE is the only MMORPG where I've sacrificed poultry to the DEVs in Voodoo ceremonies in the hope that I can get that Navy Apocolypse. EVE is more than a game, I always keep some kittens handy for when I PvP so I have atleast one to drown if I get podded, or one to drown if the enemy used stabs. Then there is the Caldari cult of David Hasselhoff which is probably going a bit too far for this forum, but don't speak ill of EVE lest you wish to incurr the wrath of DAVE!

If a WoW CM put something on WoW site/forums for even one day it would have blown EvE and every other game completely out of the competition.
Note: I am not saying this because I think EvE is a bad game, because it isn't. I am saying this because EvE advertises this poll on their website and other games such as WoW do not which puts this poll in favor of EvE.

After the vote was over and EVE got officially nominated they put a news item about it on the front page.
Bottom line: EVE has roughly 1/100th the playerbase that WoW does. Saying EVE somehow rigged the voting is just plain stupid. As has been said before in other threads:
More people probably voted AGAINST WoW than voted FOR EVE
That said, I do find EVE far superior to WoW in every single category except PVE (And WoW only wins there till you hit 60)
I agree with an above poster: I find it FAR more interesting that everyone voted that no games released in 2006 were worth playing.

"EVE a finalist in MMORPG.com Player's Choice Awards
MMORPG.com has announced the nominations for this year's Player Choice Awards and EVE, once again, is a leading contender in five out of seven categories. Final voting is now underway with EVE having the potential to repeat last year's sweep with awards in Favorite Graphics, Favorite PvE, Favorite PvP, Favorite Story and Favorite Game."
This was postedf 6/12/2006 before the poll was done lol. I'm not hating im gonna go d/l EvE but not because of that award. Only because my friend says its awesome. Btw, I have heard they always send folks to mmorpg.com anyway which is cool

EVE puts news about the game on their front page, the voters choice awards DID concern EVE and being news, info about it was put on the front. Because the people at WoW didn't care enough or choose to do the same means nothing.
MMORPG.com isn't some obscure website, it's probably the most known website conerning MMO's out there TBH, and they advertised the the awards voting on their frontpage for weeks. Trying to act like becuase CCP put a blurb on their frontpage about the voting somehow skewed the results is ludacris at best.
If you don't like the results blame the 6m+ WoW players who couldn't be bothered to come here or couldn't make the effort to vote. Obviously the alot smaller number of EVE players did like their game enough to take the time and make the effort to vote how they felt.
Everyone had their chance, the voting went on for weeks, and trying to say what MIGHT of happened, MAYBE, means nothing because at the end of the day just like in real life if you didn't take the time to vote your opinions or complaints mean nothing. Thats why it's called the VOTERS choice awards. Obviously those who DID VOTE liked EVE over any other game.

i guess we'll never know.
but what this does point to, and i hold solidly, is that the blizzard devs just don't give a rats ass... they have alot to do, but they have more than enough $ to do it 100x more effective than they are doing it.
they didn't post it on their site becuase they didn't CARE. EvE:O devs are constantly evolving their game, they're about to do a graphics overhaul, they constantly add new items and constantly make it clear that they love their game. Blizzard feels much more alienated from it's costumers, much more of a heavy-hitting corporation than an organization passionate about what they're doing.
they're revamps are changes to class talents, and tweaking skills, the only department that's doing something is the dungeon mapping, and they only create the highest end dungeons, the last lowest-end dungeon they made, the last extension to the world? was maraudan, and they're following up with this trend by adding an expansion that only is package for the higher levels. there will be a pitiful handful of new zones, level 1-20 for the new races to start in and jeweler, -.-
After playing both pretty avidly, i must say the Eve:O devs blow WoW's outta the water, they communicate 100x more, they listen to people, they're constantly evolving and so is the game. WoW has been stagnant for a very long time now.
WoW was a great game for a while, but it never went anywhere, it still isn't, there hasn't been anything innovative at all since launch. the change to the PvP system? that's just a new way to grind gear.

It's very easy to see by how much eve won:
Look at the results (percentages)
At the end they tell you how many voted (2400 or so I believe)
So out of 2400 or so EVE won in every category. To see how many voted for EVE in each category just multiply 2400 (or whatever the exact figure is) by the % of votes EVE got and you will know exactly how many people voted for EVE.
In most cases EVE had fewer than 60% or so of the votes so under 2000 people voted for EVE
Considering there are over 500,000 registered accounts on this website and only about 80,000 EVE players it's pretty hard to immagine that a post on the www.eve-online.com website made much impact at all on the voting results. But you're welcome to blame it on that if it makes you feel better about your game, whatever it happens to be.
EVE won, and won by a landslide, in every category it was nominated in (Except PVE, and I do agree that the PVE win was kinda silly, I voted for WoW in that category but I don't feel it deserved the title either. Wish there'd been a 'neither' option on that one really because, imo, EQ2 has the best PVE currently). You can blame that on a post on the website all you want. Bottom line: In the end it doesn't matter. EVE is ranked #1 here, and has been other than the year that woW originally released.
The number of votes I wish we could know is:
How many people didn't necessarily vote for EVE but were, rather, just voting AGAINST WoW? THAT would be a fun number to know.
Edit: did a little digging for ya:
60,000 total votes between nominations and final rounds.
during the final rounds I found this tidbit:
Quoted FROM the news article:
CCP’s sandbox sci-fi game, EVE Online ran away with the voting in this category for the second year in a row. Capturing a whopping 61% of the 4983 votes cast in this category, EVE left the competition, EverQuest II (23%) and World of Warcraft ( 15%) in the pixilated dust.
Since it's fairly safe to say that anyone who voted in one category voted in them all I would guess that around 5000 accounts here voted in the finals.
So all you need to do is go in each category and multiplay 4983 by the percent of votes each category got.
Remember: MMORPG.COM has hundreds of thousands of accounts. EVE has 160,000 accounts (and about 80,000 players). And WoW has over 7 million accounts (probably around 4 million actual players). So keep that in mind while thinking that a post on the EVE website somehow got EVE the win.

But the point is they DIDNT....The readers choice is what about we as a community (of mmorpg.com) think is the best game. If WOW doesnt care about its ratings, so be it, but they aint winnin any medals.
Again, WoW doesn't need a website to tell them their game is good. They know their game is good. If it wasn't, it wouldn't have 7+ million people playing it. In my opinion if the front page of WoW told people to go vote like EvE did, it would have won easy, but that's my opinion, and you are all welcome to your own. If WoW won, everyone here would be saying, "Oh, it only won because it has more people playing it, WoW sucks, and everyone knows it...cept the 7+million people playing it"
And fankly all those people saying they don't play WoW because its a "newbs" game are full of sh!t, in my opinion. They, and you, play it, but you have to bash it to "be cool" I guess.
I am not saying this stuff because I think EvE is a bad game, because it's not. I like EvE, but some of you are just so close minded it's pathetic.

At what point are you going to figure out everyone here doesn't give a rats ass about WoW? Seriously take a look at what forum this is.
It says EVE General Discussion.
It doesn't say EVE General Discusssion + Bitter WoW Fanbois now does it???
This was a thread about EVEs wins in Readers Choice Awards, it didn't say anything about what WOULD of happened, if more of the 6m players from wow had voted.
But they didn't vote did they? And those people WHO DID VOTE, liked EVE. And so EVE won. END OF STORY.
The rest of your rant is insane at best . Nobody in this thread has bashed on WoW, said that it sucks, or said it was for noobs, except you that is. All your ramblings about WoW just makes you come off like some bitter fanboi who can't get over the fact that WoW didn't win.
They didn't, get over it already. If you can't, then by all means feel free to post about it, in the WOW FORUMS.
Congratulations EVE and CCP. Very good work, and awards very much deserved.
As for all of you EVE haters with nothing better to do than troll our forums and talk about all the reasons you hate EVE:
STFU already. CCP didn't rig the vote. That's absolutely rediculous. I'm pretty sure they have better things to do. And the fact that it was on the main site is only a reflection of CCP keeping up on current events around the net about EVE and telling their subscribers about them. Wish every MMO development studio would do that, it really saves a lot of time searching forums and fan sites.

It´s so effing boring to hear EVE fanatics "discuss" with WoW fanatics which are the better game. Pointless!!!
Get a debate going on the most interesting vote; the fact that we didn´t think that any new MMO were good. Now that sure scared some devs!!
I love EVE, so for me it´s number one by far. Does that mean WoW or DoD or GW are bad?? Not at all, just not my cup of tea.
Close this discussion already..
Probably not since some of you (EX. Gameloading) spend more time on this site than playing MMORPGs.
LOL I tussled with them on the Archlord forum about hyping that game, hard to believe they can smack talk EVE while promoting AL left and right.
To each their own I guess

they're revamps are changes to class talents, and tweaking skills, the only department that's doing something is the dungeon mapping, and they only create the highest end dungeons, the last lowest-end dungeon they made, the last extension to the world? was maraudan, and they're following up with this trend by adding an expansion that only is package for the higher levels. there will be a pitiful handful of new zones, level 1-20 for the new races to start in and jeweler, -.-
After playing both pretty avidly, i must say the Eve:O devs blow WoW's outta the water, they communicate 100x more, they listen to people, they're constantly evolving and so is the game. WoW has been stagnant for a very long time now.
WoW was a great game for a while, but it never went anywhere, it still isn't, there hasn't been anything innovative at all since launch. the change to the PvP system? that's just a new way to grind gear.
EvE wins it for me because of that.
Except that the EVE CM's didn't put it on the front page. EVE players posted it. And it didn't get posted to the front page. It was a forum post, thankyouverrymuch.
After the vote was over and EVE got officially nominated they put a news item about it on the front page.
Bottom line: EVE has roughly 1/100th the playerbase that WoW does. Saying EVE somehow rigged the voting is just plain stupid. As has been said before in other threads:
You made no sense. How could the voting not be skewed in EvE's favor? I am not saying EvE "rigged" the voting, but they did have it advertised on the front page ((and yes, it was on the very first page you go to when you type www.eve-online.com and hit enter, and it's actually still there...)) of their site for like a week or two when the only real competitor never once mentioned it on their front page nor their forums. If WoW would have advertised this voting thing it would have won hands down, and there is no denying it, simply because of the numbers. I am interested is seeing by how much EvE won by seeing as they advertised and WoW didn't.
I believe it would have been much different if WoW even had it on their front page for the few hours on tuesday when the servers are down for maint. Enough people would have been to the WoW site and seen it and WoW would have easily won. You can't deny this and remain credible, sorry.
Since it's fairly safe to say that anyone who voted in one category voted in them all I would guess that around 5000 accounts here voted in the finals.
So all you need to do is go in each category and multiplay 4983 by the percent of votes each category got.
Remember: MMORPG.COM has hundreds of thousands of accounts. EVE has 160,000 accounts (and about 80,000 players). And WoW has over 7 million accounts (probably around 4 million actual players). So keep that in mind while thinking that a post on the EVE website somehow got EVE the win.

I am saying this because EvE advertises this poll on their website and other games such as WoW do not which puts this poll in favor of EvE. But the point is they DIDNT....The readers choice is what about we as a community (of mmorpg.com) think is the best game. If WOW doesnt care about its ratings, so be it, but they aint winnin any medals.
Ever consider a career in diplomacy? If so, I think I'd try elsewhere!
They're found here mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/category/102
As for all of you EVE haters with nothing better to do than troll our forums and talk about all the reasons you hate EVE:
STFU already. CCP didn't rig the vote. That's absolutely rediculous. I'm pretty sure they have better things to do. And the fact that it was on the main site is only a reflection of CCP keeping up on current events around the net about EVE and telling their subscribers about them. Wish every MMO development studio would do that, it really saves a lot of time searching forums and fan sites.
