Learning skills first?

ZeroDepthZeroDepth Member Posts: 142
Well I've been playing EVE Online for several months now and have always wondered if of getting my advanced learning skills to 4 was a good sp investment for future training, or a waste of time better spent on my mining/industrial specialization.

So do you all think it was a good choice or a waste of time?

Thanks in advanced.

Skill programs like EVE Mon might help there, but training one of those skills to lvl 4 every now and then couldn't hurt.

in the short time training the learning skills kicks you in the nuts for progressing, long term it really begins to pay off.

Really if you plan to play long term the Learning skills to 5 and Advanced learning skills to 4 will help you tremendously in the long run.

Especially when you start to look at the real long training time skills that are weeks or even a month +.

While it makes for a very boring start and I don't generally recommend it... if you can stand the very slow start it gives you it is WELL worth the time invested in the long run.  Having those skills will help a ton even in the somewhat short term.  In 6 months you'll already be 'ahead' of where you would have been without them.  Despite sinking around 2 months into getting them.  Even if you don't train them right away, up front, you will eventually train them anyway.  If you're playing long term that just means you're giving yourself the greatest bang for your buck.  Means a slower start but a faster run down the stretch.

The only learning skills NOT worth getting are the advanced skills to 5... there's really no reason to train those because the time investment just doesn't justify the *very limited* benefit they give.  All the other levels are very much worth it, however.

With the advanced learning skills requirements being reduced to basic learning 4, I'd say it's worth it, if you skip the 5th level in all the basic skills and train up to level 4 advanced first it will speed up your traning time significantly without having to spend 2 months doing JUST learning skills.

If you aren't able to find something enjoyable or profitable to do in the game while training them though don't bother. Fun first always.

The reduction is req's is huge for learning skills, really makes them more worth it and pay-off faster.

But what I would reccomend is get yourself to the point you are comfortable skillwise doing what your doing (missions/mining/whatever) then do the learning skills while you play away.

By the sound of your post, it seems you already have the skills at 4. In which yes, it was a good choice, they do make a huge difference.

Since I am still a relatively new player and I did not train up all of my skills when I first started, I have been using EveMon to determine what skills to train, and when.

Once I have decided on a training goal I use EveMon to decide the order to train the needed skills in, then figure out what basic/advanced skills are primary and secondary skills needed for my goal.  Then I see which, if any, skills I can train first to shorten the path to my goal.

I realize that long term having all of my skills trained will be of greatest benefit, but so far I am training only what will shorten my path to a goal that will take a month or two to obtain.

Just a bit of info to help you decide if both your primary and secondry atributes for a skill is above 19 then its worth it.

I think that a great way for a new player to get started is to spend a couple of days training the basic learning skills to level 3.  If you have friends in the game that would be willing to lend you a little ISK, buy a set of +2 learning attribute implants for an extra boost.  Then move into training some of the basic functional skills to level 3 (or higher if needed as a prerequisite to another skill)  such as spaceship command, navigation, engineering, gunnery or industrial, etc until you have enough skills to have some fun in the game flying a frigate or cruiser and embarking upon your chosen career.  Then, circle back and spend a couple of weeks  training basic learning skills to level 4 and advanced learning skills to level 3.  From there, focus mainly on training functional skills.  You can work in some further training of the learning skills....advanced learning level 4, basic learning level 5, and if you are a real die-hard, advanced learning level 5... as your time in the game progresses, if you find that you like the game enough to stay with it for a long time.   Few players train advanced learning all the way to level 5, as it takes several years to break even on the time spent to get advanced learning to level 5.

Taram speaks the truth. :)  While learning skills are very important in the long run, they have almost no impact in the short term.  Training Learning skills first is plain stupid and will make you hate the game, especially if you don't have a friend giving you everything you can easily earn on your own.

Spending your first 3-4 days training skills that'll save you a few hours of time on the next few days of skills just makes no sense at all, especially not if the whole point is to save time months down the line.  Train skills you need for your ship and modules first.  Get things like Energy Upgrades, Hull Upgrades, Engineering, Electronics, Mechanic, Navigation, <faction> Frigate to level II or III first.  Than worry about spending a few days training Learning skills which will help you with the level III to IV jump and especially from IV to V.

Have fun with EvE your first week, train for the future your second week.  NEVER train Learning your first few days.
