EQ2 is really for people who like the lore but don’t want or can’t participate in the EQ1 playstyle. It’s more heavily quest oriented, and more friendly to logging in and immediately doing something productive. It then tries for as much emersion within this convenient framework as possible. *EQ2 was designed to complement EQ1 not replace it.*
Despite the apparent watering down it’s received over the last few months, conceptually Vanguard is more of a successor to the EQ1 playstyle. It concentrates more on emersion and world then on activity. Any convenience is achieved without sacrificing emersions, and it’s willing to go further in limiting convenience to encourage community.
If you want to sum it up I’d say EQ2 is aimed more at the middle of the road player who wants quests, lore, activity and convenience and is willing to sacrifice a little emersion for it. I think Vanguard is still going to be aimed at a slightly more hardcore crowd, people who want as much emersion as possible, are willing to put in longer play sessions and want the closeness that develops with people you trust when the a mistake can have great consequences.
Graphically the main similarity seems to be the overall quality and that both are trying to stick to fashions that would actually be practical in the real world. I certainly wouldn’t want either to go to the overblown cartoonary that WoW uses or the degree of smut in Lineage II but a little more cheesecake wouldn’t be amiss in a fantasy setting.
Vanguard is seamless, which means it’s unlikely to perform as well as EQ2 does at similar quality graphics.
