whats wrong with my machine that makes it run so bad?

Okay so today i tried out Vanguard which i've been very excited about, i can play every other game perfectly.

So my frame rates jump between like 40-and 2 like every second, which gives me and avg fps of 3.7, and I can't adjust the settings because when I open up the settings it gets black lines through, so i can't even read it. Anyways if anyone could tell me what is doing this on my system that would be great so I know what to try and fix

AMD 64 4200+ dual core

2gig Ram ddr2

nvidia geforce 6100

250gig harddrive

If you need to know anything else please let me know. thanks

Its always kinda choppy in certain areas and the server lag gives me hickups but the only thing i could say would be your video card, but everything else looks really top notch. It also helps if you defrag your drive. Try turing off sound or clouds or shadows.

That video card is kind of low.  My 6800 GT was running 20-25 FPS.  I just got a 7950GT 512 MB card hopefully that will up my performance.

Search the forums for a posting about changing the .ini file.  This is the same as changing your setting but with no gui.  I had the same problem as you and this fixed it.  I found that changing my resolution to 1024x768 lets you see the settings menu.

It is ABSOLUTELY your video card.  Is that even a 256Mb card?  The game is really meant to be run with a card from the 7xxx series or higher.  I don't think the 6xxx are even 256-bit.  II'm pretty sure they are all 128-bit.  Also, you might want to look at the clock and memory speed of that card in addition to its onboard memory.  In comparison, that 7950 GT 512MB is a really good card to run it on.  It's 256-bit.  Has high pixel pipelines, and you can overclock it to 600+Mhz clock speed and 1600+Mhz memory clock.  My wife tried playing it on her 256Mb geForce 6150LE, and it was NOT good at all.  I'm not saying you absolutely can't play it with a 7xxx or higher, but if you don't you're going to have to drop your settings down siginificantly.

i am having the same kind of problems as the op. i know i have a decent machine. i have read every post everywhere on tweaks and it just opens up more problems. now first let me say i have nothing against sigil, sony dont care about swg anything. i have posted before on judging the game on merits. for those who can play without issue i applaud you thats great. i also know its just beta and i have beta tested many games. now to my point . what gives with creating a game that most people who would pay for it, want to play it etc cnat play. i mean i would have to upgrade my machine and i already have 2gb of ram a good 512mb card and top notch processor. this game is the one i have really been looking forward to as a new game to break away from the rest. i just really hope thay dont rush this product because what i have seen looks really awesome but i am frustrated with it too. i love the classes the combat most things about it but i feel a bit let down can any one point me somewhere that would let me enjoy this experience without upgrading.

i am not bashing anything here i want to play but i suppose i am feeling a wee bit letdown at the moment so sorry if my tone came off harsh

if you think it is bad now you should have seen it a couple of months ago. Nothiong wrong with your machine, it is just bad server/graphics optimization on the devs end

    I miss DAoC

thanks everyone for your input most appreciated, i'll look into getting a new graphic card tomorrow to see if that helps

I believe this game will have really low subscription numbers because of the requirements of a monster of a computer to run it smoothly.  I for one am not going to spend $500-$1000 upgrading for a game that's "iffy"  and held by SOE's leash.

Geforce 6600 is a 256 graphics card and if you still can't get your game settings menu to pop up try changing the graphics card settings themselves on the desktop.
