Does Turbine even know how to make Mmo's without gay graphics-movement. I mean I liked Asheron's Call 2, but that was in 2002. If they are going with the same engine - style of play as D&D you can count me out.
It's not going to be as bad as D&D (which wasn't really a BAD game, just lacked in content really badly). They have been working on this game for longer and it is definately their "flagship" project. The graphics look similar in design, but they are better in my opinion. And gameplay-wise they are totally different. DDO is an instance-based dungeon-crawling game. I dont' even think it's fair to call it an MMO. LotRO on the other hand is a "true" MMO with an expansive world and more character interaction.
I'm going to try and keep an open mind about LotRO but it's difficult. Turbine has shown the knack for great vision that they don't have the talent to implement. My love of the IP will probably convince me to try the game when it launches but it's barely in my top 5 of anticipated games. DDO isn't really a bad game just a very tightly niched game, and not a niche I fall into.
From the screenshots and ingame movies being released the graphics are going to be way beyond DDO and the world appears to be massive (as middle earth should be). I think Turbine is going all out on this one and it is on the top of my list.
So what is it about the graphics engine you don't like? This might help us understand you a little better and explain anything you want to know.
OK ill try and explain it, hope you guys understand what I'm getting at here.
About DDO and Asheron's Call 2- I liked the way the team would set up, the way the loot was split up, the team factor was definately in there, very well done.
What I dont like about turbine, is that when you compare the way the items look, the way the characters look and run around, the way the camera moves, the way the environment around you looks, example in Anarchy Online, Pre Pub SWG, WoW, they really just dont compare, definately a 2nd class Mmo maker in those fields. You need to step it up a notch, otherwise Im telling you from now, you wont make it too far, I think Lotro is your last chance at proving to the masses that you are a heavyweight mmo company and not just a pleaser for a few.
I mean your engine, items and graphics come straight out of a mid-late 1990's era type of mmo, as if your fixated and stuck there. With all that new software and tech it's definately time you changed your style..........
I was just on your website and looked at one video and it jjust proved my point, that type of combat is so out of style, the typical same old stupid go into town and talk to a billion merchants with plain old white letters hanging over them, it's just the same old story, you guys just copy paste game over game its so clear to some people......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Take my advice if you ever plan to make a new game, switch to new programmers, I cant believe you didnt already with Lotro, what a waste of another beautiful franchise. Good luck.
I guess it's all a matter of opinion when it comes to the game engine and combat system. I watched a messed around with LotRO last year at PAX and it seemed great to me. That and the fact that I'm expecting to be able to play LotRO on medium-high settings makes me happy (Comparing to DDO requirements).
I like that more then Vanguards graphics heavy engine. I can barely even play that game.
LotRO will have lower requirements than Vanguard, but in my opinion they graphics seem better. Sure, they are not so "realistic" and have a more fantasy feel to them, but I think that's good. I'll take even WoW graphics over plastic-looking models with a claymation feel any day. As for being more geared to casual players, I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I think that most MMO players are casual players. Look at WoW... Other than its endgame, it's a casual player's game. And a hardcore player could still enjoy LotRO, they will just get through the content faster and end up relying on monster play and the little raid content for their entertainment until more options are added in.
I dont know much about the D&D game cuz I am not into the old D&D so never played it. But I have looked at stuff about it online and it dose not look horrible, Like someone said it is a niche game. With LORTO I think the major complant people will have is that it is not baised on the films but in fact off the books and from what I understand is pretty faithful to them (well for a game) It is kinda hard to belive that alot of people dont know the LOTRO books and not films Staring a Former Goonie, A Gay Icon, James Bond Villian,A guy who as a kid unfroze Mel Gibson, And a man who played a wheelchair bound Latino former drugdealer Ex-con in a Al Pacino Film
Yeah, I'm really glad they made books out of the movies. They just didn't get to tell the whole story there. But I think in the books, the writers were able to expand on their ideas and really tell what they had to leave out of the movies. I was really excited when I got to Barnes & Noble and saw the covers with Frodo on them!
(Disclaimer: Oh, by the way, I'm joking. Apparently somewhere there are people stupid enough to believe crap like that, but in this case it's solely for the purposes of humor.)

HEHEHE that was a good one!
Btw guys if my pervious post did not make any sense I am kinda doped up on cold meds.
What I'm really really afraid in this game (being an Tolken fan of old) is a huge mass of Legolas, Legoolas XLegolasX (and so forth) chars strolling around.

Wouldn't worry too much about that. That has been a point Turbine has said they intend to monitor. While it is very improbable that their name filter will contain all of the "creative" (and I use that loosly and very sarcastically) variations some people can come up with, if brought to their attention by a /report or whatever the command will be I'm sure that character won't be around too long, or they will just rename it.

Hopefully! In addition the Silmarillion dictionary and index is so rich you can draw names and inspiration from it for ages to come...most characters have several names, too!
True, but the average gamer, non-Tolkien fan picking up this game most probably won't take a moment to reference such resources to see naming conventions and come up with an appropriate name. Back when I first started MMO gaming with Ultima Online, I used to get upset when I saw characters with "witty" names and other names that weren't appropriate for the setting. I quickly learned that spending time worrying about them took away from the potential enjoyment I could get out of the game. So, I just started ignoring them, and I mean completly. If I ran by two different players at two different times who were both struggling with a mob, one with a game setting appropriate name (let's say Kharvos) and the other not (like MrPeePeePantz), I'd help Kharvos out and would stand by and watch MrPeePeePantz get killed.
Games are visual (no duh, right?) and meant as an escape to another world in the case of many MMOs. Part of creating that immersion is the way we name our characters. The naming of your character, while might seem trivial to some, has a profound effect on suspension of disbelief for many others. I Pantz doesn't have enough courtesy and respect for me to try to come up with a setting based name, the least I could do is get a good laugh while he takes a trip to the old Lifestone(tm).
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
Really? I thought the DDO graphics were god awefull... this of course is from what I remember... that said LoTR doesn't look at all like D&D so I'm a bet confused unless i'm remembering wrong. (Side note.. did they fix the targeting (or lack there of in D&D? )That was the worst thing about the game.
But yeah I remember D&D looking like it was drawn with a pencil or something.

lol. Yes, it will be. I come from beta (I also quit beta). The game is WoW with DDO flavour.

So does quitting Beta mean that you are no longer bound by the legal contract you signed for the length of the contract? Cause I don't think it does.

Hopefully the graphics will be similar. I'm running a 6600 GT and DDO looks great. I hate having to turn the settings right down to play this like SoH

Turbine is going on an Ultra-Casual route, but I don t think there is such kind of player around........only on Turbines head I guess.
An hint for Turbine...even casual players wants some depth and a bit of challenge in their games (not that they will listen)
