Single Player to Multiplayer

I dont really understand what they mean by this.  Obviously you start in a single player scenario but is the majority of the content single player?   Or is the single player part basically a tutorial?  If most of the game is a single player experience, is there anything in multiplayer besides big battles and bar fights?  Are there quests and ways to level or is the multiplayer portion more or less an end-game battleground?

They might make it like Guild Wars. The first few quests you do are single player just to get you used to the way things work then let you go and play with everyone else.

Guild Wars is instanced, of course.  Is AoC gonna be instanced then?

There are 80 levels. 20 of them are single player. I doubt that's a majority of content.

PS: Since most MMOs have 60 levels normally...

Sounds good.  So will there be PvE in the MMO portion or is it mainly PvP?

Just to expand on what is already said, and to clear up some ideas flying about:

    * The first 20 levels of Age of Conan will be what is considered a singleplayer game. During this time you build a background to your character, gaining your class and archtype, the quest storyline is different for each class.

    * All the singleplayer part is done on Funcom servers, and at certain points in your singleplayer experience you will be able to meet up and socialise with other players.

    * Once you hit 20 the real MMO begins, all prepared, with gear, a decent level of skills, and ready to take on the world.

    * You do not begin paying the monthly fee until you begin the multiplayer section, that is, once you hit level 20.

That is all I can remember for now, but with Anarchy online Funcom managed to provide a huge (I mean that in the largest of terms) for all 220 levels, plus the extra alien ones. So im sure the journey to level 80 will be full to the brim of content.

EDIT: And to reply to your post above Duke, it is a large mixture of both, PvP is utterly awesome, with city raids and sieges, wars between guilds and the Border kingdoms.

I suggest anyone who has an interest in this game go over to the community forums and read the FAQ on the AoC website.

www.bymitra.com is also an excellent recourse.

As far as i've read it is pure single player until level 5, and then from level 5 till 20 it is more of co-op multiplayer, you can meet players in town and for some of the quests you will be able to find help among other adventurers.

Also most likely the first 20 levels are going to be free to play - the only thing you'll have to pay for will be the game itself, it's a form of 30 day trial tough i bet hardcore gamers will enjoy it for less then 30 days hehe. Anway it's something that's yet to be confirmed as we get closer to the release.

The first 20 levels are a single player storyline, you can chat with and occaisionally group up with other players on the islands of Tortage, but the quests are written as a single player experience. One of the main points of the first 20 levels is that it is indeed a tutorial, sort of a kiddie pool if you will that will let a new player learn the ropes before being dumped out into the main world.

Multiplayer, the big fights mostly involve sieges of player towns, there will also be smaller encounters aside from the tavern brawls, in arenas and other locations such as the borderlands which are FFA PvP. So mind your surroundings, it might not just be a pack of wolves that ambush you this time.

There will be plenty of PvE, in fact Funcom has created seperate skill, xp, currency, loot, and equipment tables for both styles of gameplay. Assuming you stay off of the PvP servers, it will be quite possible to PvE all the way to the top and stay there without ever engaging in a player vs player fight, and vice versa to a lesser degree if your preference is PvP. Both hypothetical players will be able to participate in their own version of the city sieges that the endgame is focused around, the primary difference being the number and nature of the opponent. Of course, the best experience will be had by playing in the best of both worlds.

So then is it safe to assume one can level off of PVP? I know Warhammer Online is doing this, and I JUST started researching on AoC today so pardon my stupidity on the matter. AoC, and WAR are the two MMO's I am currently interested in. Now I am just trying to figure out which one I am MORE interested in. So far WAR has a lot of things that look really cool, but AoC seemingly has more innovation in terms of gameplay.

Also, this singleplayer to 20 aspect seems really cool. That way you are safe to level and learn without it being ganksville '07.

I will definitely try both AoC, and WAR and believe they will both be awesome in their own respect so it's going to be tough to choose. Luckily I am no longer 15 (like I was when I started EQ 9 years ago) so I can afford to play two if need be.

    Yes, and no

You have the basic 80 levels, these are gained through normal PvE

You have levels of the various crafting skill specialties, gained through various quests

and finally, you have PvP levels, gained through player fights, these allow you to get skills and stat bonuses intended exclusively for PvP.

Because the tables are seperated, you could potentially be only level 20 or so, and be a master in terms of PvP.
