They better modify the patcher before release

I'm sitting in my apartment watching my friend try to update his beta client.

He's gotten in 60ish percent twice now, and then his download craps out.

I'm actually AMAZED that Sigil/SOE didn't allow you to save your progress on your patching process. Especially given the fact that the game is so obnoxiously large. It doesn't seem like they took costumer satisfaction or convenience into account here at all.

For their own sake, they best correct this mistake before official launch, or I think they'll cost themselves even more customers. Let's face it, not many people are going to download 5-12 hours of patching more than once.

If you have any concerns, address them here:

That sounds really odd.  SOE uses the same patching process on all the servers they maintain.  And it should never cause the problem your friend is having.  Once the file being patched is downloaded, it's there in the folder.  Each file has a version number associated with it, and if it's the correct version, it's left alone.  If it's wrong, they update and replace the file.  It's not done in one big "lump" like WoW patches.  It sounds like a weird problem on his end, but I would recommend calling tech support or trying the SOE online support at station.sony.com/chat/.

I agree, Extra large + broken patcher = NOT good.

I am having feelings.. Dark and Light type of feelings.. I hope this isn't the case cause this has a larger following and I love a game with great community.

Yeah, I've never had problems with SOE patches myself. Other than them being long, haha.

I think it's because he's downloaded the client too. Thus, it's gotta DL the game and then the patches. The problem being, he can't seem to get the game fully downloaded.

I won't complain about a game's size, however, take into consideration that 17.5 gigs can take quite awhile to download, and he started downloading yesterday.

I don't see why they wouldn't just break it into 3 smaller chunks, and save it at different intervals.

Brihtwulf  is correct the patcher for vanguard is the same one as SOE uses for most all of its games. It downloads and processes each file as it is downloaded.  You can stop it at any time and it picks up where it stopped the next time. He should contact SOE support.

Does he have problems patching other SOE games?

man i dont even know why you would make a thread about this, people on mmorpg.com a) don't care about this extremely unimportant issue  b) can't do anything about it
  • batpuppybatpuppy Member Posts: 32
Yeah does seem strange to post this here. If he is downloading from fileplanet then he should try using their(fileplanets)  downloader and tools.
  • KurirKurir Member UncommonPosts: 244

Well if they use the same downloader/patcher that everyone else uses thank god I never played those games that use it. I have experienced the same issues that the OP describes, and its an absurely long process. I see no earthly reason that the program couldn't simply address those areas needing to be updated rather than going through the entire process each time a patch is released. Its takes literally all day and quite frankly it had better be changed upon commercial release because if anyone is like me, they won't put up with it for very long.

    Right.

Pardon me for thinking that possible customers might be turned off by yet another bug.

I don't recall asking for help either, I was merely trying to raise awareness.

Also, he has the zip-file already downloaded.

Well, at least you admit to your agenda (discouraging customers from purchasing a particular game).  It does look bad though coming from someone with "Staff Writer" below their name.

I haven't had any major problems patching Vanguard, so the problem your "friend" is having may or may not be related to the patcher.  You are jumping to conclusions.  Ask for help on the Vanguard beta forums if you are still having trouble patching.

Regardless, I doubt a patcher bug for a game still in beta would discourage anyone considering purchasing the game when it is eventually released.  That's just silly.

I applaud him for the post and for his "agenda". He cares about his readers.  Unlike SOE/Sigel cares about the customers.  Maybe he is trying to discourage them as a warning, "don't buy this POS lemon".

There's nothing wrong with it.  The dowload works fine.  The problem is that the UI is not correctly reflecting the status.

You will get all the files and when you will see "PLAY" it's ready.

Ya that is strange i stopped my download a few times , even checked the vanguard folder it was saving as it was downloading But god ya it took a long time to download  lol

since i didn't get a beta key for the NA release i thought i would try out the EQII expansion 7 day free trial

downloaded the game with no problem but then i got to the patching - at least 15 hours - couldn't say for sure as the time left went up and down  - finally got it done

very pretty game but lordy - if you buy a box in the store just how old is it and how long will the subsequent download be

got a key for vanguard from the european beta launch so didn't get to play EQII much - the packed version of the game downloaded in less than 2 minutes and was up to date as of saturday - but of course it must be patched and so far after 12 hours of downloading (on a 6 meg download - which is actually between 3 and 4) my time left varies from 5 to 7 hours left constantly

what i would like to know is why isn't the compacted client updated twice a day at least so the end-user doesn't have to go through this

Seems like Sony thinks they have MMO gamplayers on a morphine drip and will go through anything to get our fix

what is it  going to be like to buy the box which will be very outdated the day it is shipped?

SOE patcher is awesome, please read about it before you comment.   They use a new technology, you dont actually download the entire file if you have the older ones anymore, you download whats changed in that file.    If its stuck at 60% maybe he cant fit the 20 GBs into his PC HD :)

At  230 EST i got my CD-key for the european beta.following the directions in the email I dowloaded the 11 meg installer and got started.I umpacked the files and placed the installation directory on a drive with 133 gigs free to use.Got home at 1130 est and it still needed 2 hours two finish.Once it hit 00.00 it then read that it still had needed nine more hours to complete....After starting and stoping it twice it now reads 26 more hours to go since it seems most of the europeans are doing the same thing directly thru sony killing bandwith from max 185k a sec down to 50k a sec...

I could not agree with you more, I think if these so called 'writers' for this site want to post on these boards, they SHOULD NOT advertise the fact they do indeed write for this site. I have no plans to play Vanguard but using language such as 'yet another bug' is not professional and is biased and you are indirectly influencing people's opinions.

Can you (Cymdai) tell us actually why you feel the need to advertise you are a staff writer?? It is totally unnecessary for you to do this!

    Uh, relax.

I don't have an agenda. I'm sorry if it appears to you that I do.

My position should not affect my opinion. By your logic, it would be correct for me to merely ignore simple observations, as my opinions might offend a user.

I'm sorry if you choose to disagree with my phrasing, seeing  how there is nothing wrong with it. As long as there is at least 1 bug present in the game, saying "yet another bug" is correct. Find me a flawless game, and I'll re-word it.

Also, I found it silly to create an alternate account to post. I write for this site, why shouldn't I be allowed to browse it? That seems foolish.

I wonder if I would catch similar backlash if I were to make a topic praising Vanguard...for some reason, I doubt it.

Besides, this is a message board, not an official review. It's my job to be objective, it's my right to have an opinion.

Why not just delete from your profile the fact that you are a staff writer for this site?

Well to answer your question Cym yes the dowloader from SOE kinda sucks.Instead of haveing  3-4 compressed files its downloading every file one at a time while stoping to download one then starting up again to dowload the next. Its basically turning a 10 hour downloaded on my 1.5 meg dsl to a 24 hour dowload.O well at least i wasnt dumb enough to sign up for filplanet for this and just got in the free euro beta.

    P.S.

As a writer, you should know the power of language and how specific words can influence people's opinions.

I don't know of any other gaming website where the staff writers post in the forums and advertise the fact that they work/contribute to the site on which they are published.

Of course you have your own personal opinions and I believe you should be able to post them, however, can you tell me why we as readers NEED TO KNOW YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THIS SITE when you are posting under the alias of Cymdai?

And for the record, I have no intentions of playing Vanguard, I am happy with DDO.

The issue I have is of Journalisitc Integrity.

The account was upgraded by higher-ups. I don't get to choose whether or not it displays. I have one account here.

It was either make an alt, or post on my current. I chose to just keep this account.

I believe if there's a problem with that, the moderator or my higher-up will inform me.
