I say only has one more year. There are so many new game coming out (ie Vanguard, WAR, LotRO etc) and WoW hasnt really changed that much, BC didnt really add any new game play ideas its the same old WoW.
MMO expansions have always been less than what I wanted... don't know why.
Instead of an xpansion, I would rather have seen Blizz take that money and create a new mmo, something that combined rpg like wow had, with some rts like they did so well with in warcraft. But then, there are 7+ mill playing wow... and I absolutely don't understand why. My inability to comprehend that fact, to understand what kind of mentality the playerbase must be to play wow for 2+ years.... means that I'm completely out of touch and don't have a right to an opinion, let alone a prediction...
Why do WoW-haters insist on its demise? Do you think you've come up with something original? You haven't. People said WoW would fall when the FREE Guild Wars came out....nope WoW survived and grew. People said WoW would fall when D&D Online came out...nope WoW survived and grew.
There are a lot of people who wants to bash the winner. It has always been like that and it will propably continue.
During these bashings you'll often read things like: "Why does people play this game, I just don't get it!"
The answer is extremely obvious: It is accessible. Blizzard did what anybody could have done and they did it so well that they have now created what can only be referred to as the household name in MMOs. World of Warcraft is the standard to beat and it has nothing to do with graphics, gameplay, choice of classes/races/talents/skills/whatever in the first place. It has to do with how easy the game is getting into.
World of Warcraft is easy and it is rewarding, it doesn't punish you and it always, ALWAYS delivers on the question "What should I do now?".
It might not be the favourite game for the individual, I find flaws in WoW continually, but the flaws in WoW are outweighed by the accessibility of the game as a whole. And this whole is now so firmly stuck in the public mind that parents will allow their children to play WoW without hesitation, they have heard about it, they see that their kid can manage playing without having to resort to parental help, and they feel that the game is safe and a good passtime.
WoW will not see any noticable decline in subscribers anytime soon, they will continue to bring new people into the world of MMOs and some of those people will go to other (newer?) games as time passes. But new players will come in and WoW will stay on top of the MMO world for the foreseeable future. At least three more years.

They generally insist on it's demise to try, in some way, to validate their decision to leave the game or not play at all. Some of course have never ever played the game at all and just feel a need to bash something they know nothing about just because other people do it.
I must say that the ones that make me laugh out loud the most are those that say "well it only has 12 months left because game 'x' will be out by then." Firstly, these people, let alone the developers of the games themselves don't know exactly when or if these games will make it to market. Secondly, as no-one has ever played them, they have no idea whether the game will be a success or not. Even funnier still are those that insist that WoW is only popular because of the franchise it was born from, yet insist that games like Conan or Lord of the Rings will be a major success before it has even been seen or released???
At the end of the day, no-one knows for sure how long WoW will keep it's crown, for all we know Burning Crusade could crash and every player will leave in disgust within the first month of upgrade or it could live on for another 10 years, WHO KNOWS???
Just please stop making silly predictions, it has been done to death! Either play the game or don't, it is entirely up to you, but please remember that it is everyone else' individual choice to do the same.
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
Just because you quit WoW, doesn't mean everyone else will.
Been out over 2 years, and they're adding more servers still.
That's because of Asia.
The add/drop rate of people that play the game in the US and Europe is probably flattening out relatively quickly just going by feedback from various forums.
However WoW will never go away because of the Asia market. The same way they still have Starcraft tournaments, no matter what Blizzard does to WoW, they'll still play it.
--------------------------------------------- I live to fight, and fight to live.
I don't play WoW no more, but I thought I read Europeans were getting new servers for when the EXP was released, I guess it would be the same for USA'. No clue otherwise.

This is what people have been saying since the start of World of Warcraft. Give it a rest already. You say that BC didn't really add any new game play idea's. Funny thing is, Vanguard, WAR and Lotro don't add any new gameplay idea's either.

Well put Hubabuba. Well put indeed. Yes the expansion is not going to address all the issues that people don't like about the game, but it addresses many of them.
End game not accessable? So they lowered to 25 people max and made two difficulty settings to make end-game more accessable to more "casual" players.
Bland PVP content? Every new zone in Outland is having PVP objectives, and adding a new battleground.
Nothing else to do? 10 more levels (supposed to take as long 60-70 as 1-60 takes) and a boatload of new content, two new races to play around with, and having horde palidans and alliance shamans really mixes things up in terms of party/raid balance.
And I agree, EQ2, Guild Wars, DDO, and now Vanguard were/are all suppose to be WoW killers, but WoW as you said has grown to ridiculously huge size worldwide and will do so even more with Burning Crusade out. Try as they may, they just can't beat out WoW.
Why is this? It really is a great game and by far the best out there (in my opinion and the opinion of 7 million others it seems)
All games have their faults, and their strengths. WoW just has a lot more stengths
My oppinion, it's a drastic underestimation to count WoW out at any given point in the future, whether that be a year from now or even 5.
Blizzard has officialy stated a few times that they realised the expansion took to long to role out and that they want to fix that in the future. WoWs downright massive popularity through them for a loop big time, dealing with that kind of growth and the kinds of huge numbers they have is not easy, if you ask me it's a damn miracle they made it through 2 years without catastrophic failures of the client, servers or databases.
With TBC comming to fruition, a full on expansion team banging out the next ideas, I wouldn't be surprised to see an 8 or 10 month expansion turn around. They know it's big money and you count on Blizzard to go where the money is. They also know that without a massive amount of content to keep the natives happy, they don't have much time in the market, I guarantee you their not going to let that happen. All this is especially true when you take into consideration that WoW must be a huge % of their pure income revenue.
Just because you quit WoW, doesn't mean everyone else will.

Blizz opened 4 new relams in the US last week and are opening 6 new relams in the EU on the 15th.
Asia aint even getting the expansion at launch they have to wait a few months.LOL

Well thats not entirely true Gameloading. Vanguard has added the whole diplomacy aspect to their game, which is a very new concept to the western audience. As far as all the asian mmorpgs go, I am not sure, you would know better then me .
But anyways back to the original topic. I think that it is ridiculous to assume that WoW is going to be dead in 1 year. What will happen to it will be the same thing that has happened to EQ 1. The population will slowly diminish as more and more quality games come out. EQ 1 may not have a huge population like back in its prime but it still has a very healthy population. And that is all that matters. WoW will be the same way. They will still have plenty of fans years later.
I am one of those guys who got tired(bored) of WoW. Do I want to see it die though? No, why would I? It is a game that alot of people enjoy, so I am glad to see that it is around. I personally am waiting for Vanguard and possibly the Lord of the Rings Online, but I am glad to see that there are alot of options for different people to enjoy. Variety is the spice of life.
About 15 new US servers in the last month or so, yep sounds like a dying game to me (bringing the total to around 200 US servers). I have played WoW off and on and it is great at what it does, is it my favorite MMORPG, nope, but when real life crowds in on my gaming time, its about the only game I can log into for an hour a day and still advance. Plus for all the people who never played any of the other MMORPG's it is very easy to get into and to advance so people are not put off.
WoW's main clientele is the average player and the average player is not out whining on the boards, he doesn't even know the board exist. Forums usually attract the more experienced MMO player and they do not constitute WoW's main player base, even though you might be surprised how many of your old hardcore MMO buddies now live in WoW ....

Couldn't have said it better myself. I personally have no interest in wow's raid content so the end game got really boring to me, but I will never say that WoW isn't a great game. I am also still interested in Vanguard because it seems like it's going to have a bit more depth than WoW, and I am an ex EQ player so I am glad to see this game getting back to some of those roots. I've heard a lot of bad things about it, but I'll make my own judgements.
As for the life span of WoW, I think a year is a bit of a stretch. WoW will definitely be around for quite some time as it has an extremely LARGE population and following.
Vanguard sucks. I just came from playing the beta and LotRO was made by Turbine so you know that isn't going to be good.
So insightful... I too am in the beta and Vanguard seems to be shaping up pretty well to what it set out to be. A current generation hardcore niche game. They won't make a dent in WoW's numbers since they will probably be in the 300-500k subscription level and will be getting players from a bit everywhere. Actually the game is less hardcore than it seemed it would be a year ago, I would place it mid road between Eq1 and EQ 2.
I dont think any WOW killers are coming .. largly because theres no real such thing as a game killer (other then EA .. la morte Earth and Beyond. *sigh*). I do however think WOW .. who ironically recently boasted about there population going up and up .. are gonna see a conciderable fall off in population in the next few monthes because of games like Age of Conan, Vanguard, and WAR. Conan because of the shear innovation of what they are doing and Vanguard and WAR because of there approaches to player vs. player content that WOW is honestly lacking in severly. End game raids are only fun for so long.. and its obvious listening to the WOW community that that element is getting old fast. They need something fresh .. and I dont see them working on it. I work in the games retail market .. and alot of people are canceling there reservations for the expansion and alot of the die hard WOW fans who usually come in are reserving WAR and AoC like mad. That says it all for me. WOW will by no means die .. or even fall far to the wayside .. but I think there seat at the top is starting to crumble ... fast.
Player population in North America now exceeds 2 million, while Europe and China pass the 1.5 million player and 3.5 million player marks, respectively.
Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that World of Warcraft®, its subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), is now played by more than 8 million gamers around the world. World of Warcraft has also achieved new regional subscriber milestones, with more than 2 million players in North America, more than 1.5 million players in Europe, and more than 3.5 million players in China.

You miss the entire point of the thread. It isnt about what they are doing right now. Right now they have no real compition. Wait for a couple monthes when Age of Conan comes out .. or post summer when WAR hits. Those numbers which are inflated by lack of other real options compounded by a new expansion ... which always brings people back for another try ... are gonna seriously deflate some. Like I said ... WOW isnt gonna die ..but its definatly gonna lose some numbers. I can almost garuntee that.
Actually I do get the idea of the thread, when new games come out people leave for a month, hate being poor, low level, etc and a very large proportion comes back. WoW is still in the expansion phase, their numbers are constantly going up, stores keep a ton of them in stock cause they sell. This will end at some point but I am pretty sure we will see them hit 10 million + before the decline starts. There are 2 games that might get some numbers, Conan and Warhammer, but I think we will be talking about 500k a piece and not millions and these players will come from everywhere, the smaller MMORPG's will suffer a lot more than WoW will, since several are already in the declining phase and have no way to counter the exit of players the new games will cause.
Asherons Call, Anarchy Online, Horizons, Ryzom, Ultima Online, RF Online, Dark and Light etc are all games that may even cease to exist it the new releases are interesting, while WoW, being no longer just a game but an Internet phenomena will lose a few but at the same time is still attracting new players so it will not be noticable.
When games like Horizons, Dark and Light and SWG post NGE can putter around to this day, can you or anyone else confidently predict when a particular MMO is going to bite the dust?
Haters love to hate it. 7 Million people are having too much fun to argue.
Yeah, 6.99 million bubble gum chewing, baggy pants wearing, soda drinking, Britney Spears listening, cartoon watching, Mall hanging, Didn't see the Berlin Wall coming down people.

Yeah, 6.99 million bubble gum chewing, baggy pants wearing, soda drinking, Britney Spears listening, cartoon watching, Mall hanging, Didn't see the Berlin Wall coming down people.
Those bubblegum chewing kids have fully paid monthly subscriptions. And besides, those kids also tend to have several characters that they split thier play time between, exploring the differant race/class combinations available and running through the content multiple times. In other words, they see and do everything and stay busy playing thier slow leveling mid level toons.
This means that they are far less likely to notice things like weak end game content or hum-drum pvp- they'er too busy meeting people and having fun.
The profile of the MMO player has changed- WoW changed it. These kids will keep playing WoW, and by the time they get tired of it there will be a new crop of kids who grew out of their diapers watching big borther/sister play WoW.
I't is completely silly for anyonr to believ that this game is anyway near the peak of it's lifespan.
