I'd say i am a mix of all of those especially old-school. Like some some other people said i also play WoW. At the same time though I play all types of games no matter what genre.

Curt teh Juggler: our graduation ceremony was today, and right when some gamer nerd got his diploma, someone in the audience played the zelda "get item" music and he did the zelda spin-hold-out-item stance

Gamer who doesn’t play a whole lot and has other hobbies than gaming. A casual doesn’t necessarily play the newest games. They aren’t active in the gaming scene, though they might want read reviews of certain games before they go out and buy them. Casual gamers play both single player and multiplayer, but their skill level is lower than the hardcore gamers and than the cyberathletes. An example of a casual gamer could be a person who enjoys playing a bit counter strike after school. He doesn’t really care whether he wins or losses, he just wants to relax. It could also be a gamer who plays The Sims, a game where there’s no real competition. It’s a game where you can take your time, and enjoy the game whether you’ve played it 2 hours or 50 hours.

That's the sterotype of a causal gamer. You would think that one dosen't play the newest games, but as a hobby in your terms, they would. When one has a hobby, you are usually up to date with it. Casual gamers are mostly always active in the gaming scene. They are gamers, if it's somthing they enjoy of course they would. You can't necessarly say they always go by reviews, becuase usually they don't care what others think. They play what they are intresed in. To say that their skill level is lower than a hardcore gamer or so called cyberathletes is not true. A casual gamer or any gamer for that matter has the ability to take down anyone at any skill level.

To tell you the truth, I don't think you can catagorize the skill of a gamer, but most likely at the different levels they play. For example say you can play normally, but play around yet you can start being serious with it. I think the list of what you got is inaccurate in most cases. I would have ot say if you can shorten it all down to one sentence, it would be most prefferable. You can't catagorize a gamer so easily other than Old School and Hardcore.

I think that the Xbox Gamer Zone has a better view of it:

I like that you have a hybrid catagory, but one can be in more than 2 of those catagories. They can be in all of them. That is why I said you can't necessarly catagorize a gamer. We all have different taste and different methods. I would say I'm a hybrid, but you say only two so I would have to say none of the above. I can be all of them, yet when I play old school, I'm old school, if I'm playing to win, I can become hardcore, when I want to relax I can be casual, if I'm competing I can be competitive, if I can be any off the above twice, I guess I would be hybrid, but I can be all of the above or more than there which would make me none of the above, but I'm a gamer.

I think you should have just asked us instead of catagorizing us.
I am asking you. You don't have to be one of the gamers I descriped, as everybody is different. It's just so it easier to "catagorize" yourself, or find the type that's most like you.

As you see in my post, I'm hybrid of hardcore, competitive and old school. Some games I even play casual. But my main gaming profile would be competitive, since I mostly play games that requires a lot of skill and is very prominent in the E-sport scene.

Hmm when I played WoW - Hardcore and I dont regret a second of it.

Me now - CSS :), Casual/Competitive, Ive played it for so long that things have become predictable, Ive stopped using aiming weapons and just rush hard with P90 or Tmp... or awp when I'm lazy. Modjoe knows what I'm talking about no doubt.

For me gaming is a MUST after a long hard day at work... (unless I have other plans) not to a mention a good ice cold beer.

Mostly Casual. But then I work on games so I spend a lot of time checking out the competition. With games being work, I have other hobbies to keep my melon from asploding.

I'm currently designing a PnP RPG for play with my friends and I compete in Archery Tournaments. Ol' SKool Recurve BOOOOYAAAAA! No training wheels on my bow, baby!

As it is now, I'm in cal-main, and that's right in the middle of the pack of leagues.
I played competitively (all my multiplayer games are) with a friend of mine and I took down cal members too. That was when I had the game for a week or two. I tell these people how long I've been playing and they don't believe me. I just don't like being in charge of bombs. That's my weakness, like a burden on my sholders.

I still stand by my point though that you can't really catagorize a skill level of a gamer and it's all by preference. If I were to pick out of that list in the author post. I would have to say all of the above, but there are definitions in some of them in which I don't agree opun. Not trying to attack anyone on that. Just saying that a lot of it is...somthing I'm not feelin.

    i was hardcore gamer.

first of all i played single person games. until i started playing css. played it for over a year. hardcore style

than i met world of warcraft and it fucked up my life. played it for almost 2 years from when i came home till when i wanted to stop.

after that my social life was fucked up. and it started to get boring so i quited. than i played single person games again

but now i'm looking for a nice online game, but for the research i have done i think wow is one of the best online games.

maybe i start playing it again, but lesser hours than before.

have tried a lot of other online games but not one can match the fun of wow.

    cheers

    Casual.

I just play to relax and enjoy the environments and sounds and stuff.  It beats watching television lately.  I consider it along the lines of that kind of entertainment.  Like a movie or a good show.  I'm not a competitive t.v. watcher and I don't approach gaming that way either.
