Is it very similar to EQII?

Hi all!

I am still downloading my beta, but have read a massive amount of forum posts, seen hundreds of screenshots and watched my fair amount of vidoes.

It all comes down to this: Is this game more or less EQII? Same main guy behind it, similar graphics, interface and content.

Can anyone that have played both the beta and EQII tell me about how similar they are in practice?

They are rather similar in many aspects, particular the general look and feel of the graphics.  The gameplay is similar, but you can say that about most MMOs.  There are some more options to combat with various types of skill use, but it's nothing that wanders too far from the norm.  This mostly the click-and-wait (not as bad as some games though).  Of course both have a wide selection of races and classes, but Vanguard wins out here.  I haven't played on the PvP server, so I can't compare that aspect to it.  Also, Vanguard has a much more involved and complex crafting system, and they have the Diplomacy system (still haven't really understood the value of it though).  Are there any particular areas of similarity you're concerned about?

Shouldn't have that frenzied "whack-a-mole" button mashing that makes every class play the same in EQ2.

This will be a better game, I think.

To me, it reminds me more of EQ1 rather than EQ2

Well, the looks of a game are rather important to me to get into the groove. I am not 100% into the EQ-style graphics. I wished they had made it a little, little bit more like WoW. It looks a bit "stiff" as it is.

Well, gonna take a look atleast...

Graphically and gamplay wise (as far as the adventuring content goes) it's very similar in feel to EQ2.  The Vanbois can try to deny it but it's true.  However the crafting appears (don't have a ton of personal experience yet) so far to be fairly well done and diplomacy is definitely a nice addition.  Add onto that features like boats, player made houses, seamless world, etc and the game certainly shows itself to be a game worth merit without being a clone of prior games.

While I don't currently adore the game I think that with 6 - 12 months of continued improvement (hopefully to the character animations) and additions to the character creation customization (i.e. more hairstyles....which are needed pretty badly given that helmets don't actually show up ingame yet) the game will be quite solid.  Too bad SOE (they're the one footing the bill at this point) didn't allow some more time to polish the game up.

Eh? Seriously what do you even mean?

No, VG is more like EQ1 than EQ2. EQ2 has much better combat animations (and from what I've seen also spell casting effects) but VG definately has a better environmental graphics engine. The game looks great... as long as no one moves (piss poor animations, ala EQ1).

The game play and challenges are far more like Eq1 than EQ2... travel is kinda tedious, you get CRs around level 7, no instances /etc.

I mean EQ2 is a frenzied button-mashing exercise in which every character is setting off some sort of magical effect or heal spell through ordinary actions and Heroic Opportunity Wheel results.  An EQ2 fighter can be seen wielding a fiery sword at level one, even though the sword is crap and the fighter supposedly doesn't have any spells or magical items.

I agree that Vanguard should play more like EQ1, never said otherwise.

Simply said: if you liked EQ2 you may not like Vanguard much. Many things EQ2 has Vanguard has not (maybe not yet).

I still don't understand what you mean. You mash buttons just as much in VG as you do in EQ2 and even WoW for that matter.

Yeah, EQ2 has special moves that has effects on a low level guardian. His sword doesn't glow forever, only for that special move. Don't see why that's a negative. The animations in VG are horrible in comparison... melee is just beyond boring to watch.

With my cleric I am mashing my nuke spell and melee attack "style/spell" just as much as I was mashing my nukes and heals in EQ2.
