I believe i read somewhere that the new expansion would bring a lot more skill points to people just starting the game.
Currently I'm playing X3 which is a lot like EVE but without the skill point time sink, or the social side of it. So I'm looking to change my ways! If there is a link stating what the new system brings i'd be very greatful if someone w ould provide it.

Before the expansion the average starting skilpoints was about 30,000 on average.
Now its 800,000
Also the learning skills that mean you learn faster have been amde easier to learn overall.
CCP understand that there is a uphill climb for new people and as you can see they are trying to make things easier for newbies.
I intend to pick up a copy of X3 in the next week or two. From what I know about the game, X3 is a twitch based control interface which is NOTHING like EVE's coodinate controls. Also, X3's "empire building" could be a similar feature although it is also nothing like EVE's POS building and capital ship yard support and logistical requirements.
The graphics in X3 should be a little better where as you'll have more environmental elements presented in EVE's atmosphere.
You cannot use a joystick in EVE like you can with X3 nor would there be any purpose to do so. EVE plays more like an RTS interface whereas X3 exhibits more of a "fighter simulation" type of game play.
Don't come into EVE expecting it to be like x3 or you'll be very dissapointed. It's much more complex and dynamic.
1) New chars now have 800,000+ SP on creation.
2) Learning skill requirements were lowered. They are about 10x faster to train them now.
3) New Battlecruiser and Battleship added for each race. Battlecruiser works very well even/especially for newer players.
4) Warp to 0 given to all players... both speeds up and makes travel safer. Made instajump/dock bookmarks a thing of the past.
5) Salvaging - new playes can easily train up for this in under 1 day. Opens up a VERY easy way to make extra money.
Ton of other stuff but those are the ones that will jump right out at you when you first log in.

Actually eve is very similar to the X games.
It has a trading system.
It has a wide range of ships and modules.
It has pirates
It has gates as a form of travel
It has a area of space thats very unsafe [as in Xenon space]
You see X3 like eve was based on the game elite its just they took slightly differnt directions.
X games is single player and eve is multiplayer.
Graphic wise they will be at the same level later this year.
I take it that production is still as hard and unprofiting for starters as it used to be?
Well, the only reason it is unprofitable for starting players is that they wont have the ISK base to get those higher money making BPOs. Also, the market is saturated in most parts with the mods that the noobs would use, so those BPOs arent worth much. But it still is very possible to get some good ISK from production. Just quicker ways to make money at the start.
If you want big profits, you've got to take a gamble on something no one else has tried yet.

With standard tech 1 parts, you have competition from old players who have maxed out their production efficiency , meaning they need less materials for the same goods. So far, I've found that buying the minerals is more expensive than buying the finished product (my char has production efficiency at 3).This said, it can still make sense if you gather your own materials by mining or salvaging. I've made some nice money over the last weeks by building and selling rigs.
