personally i find class based games simply so much more fun -when done right-
With classes, the developers have much much more freedom for character creation, and things can be much more unique. for example daoc, theres alot of unique classes there. Necromancers, animists, vampiirs, bone dancers, theurgists, warlocks for the most unique imho.
Could any of these be done in a skill based system?
With skill based system theres customization for characters in the form of all skills available, but overall they are generally alot less unique. I see alot of praise for the original uo, but back in the day, excluding crafting skills, the actual combat selections were very very slim, sure there were ways to make yourself semi unique(besides people with extremely similar builds, common builds, or just base builds).
Theres alot of problems with class based games, simply because a lot of the time devs don't think outside of the box.
wow for example.
Warrior, its a melee char who takes and deals damage
rogue, its a stealth char who does melee damage
hunter, has a animal, shoots with ranged
warlock, has pets, and damage spells, and fear
mages, damage spells, some cc
shaman, melee/spells/heals
druid, spells/rogue/warrior forms/healing
paladin, melee/tanking/healing
priest, damage spells, heal spells.
are any of these classes really anything special or unique. Closest are shaman and druids, but even then the way they do things is still basic.
thats a problem.
Having base classes aren't a bad thing, people like them. The problem is the small selection, and the lack of anything thats really unique.
Class based games just need more unique elements in to exploit the system that skill based games just can't have.
