Newbie: Would like some direction please.

I want to be a captian fighting pirates. I want to be good at sea battle and land battle, an efficient warrior.
What should my skill set look like?
What special skills should I learn and focus on?
Where and what should I start with?

Well, first off, i would recommend becoming a merchant to fudn your career. After that, I would say leanr falchion skills, as they have good accuracy and a defense bonus.Then id also learn ming, wodcutting and foundry unless youd like to buy your own weapons. The rest is pretyt much up to you.

Is there any guides out there? for new members in particular? any clan sites with help details on? i think im doing ok in the game but i still havent really a clue what im doing. Im not in a guild or anything but would love someone to show me the ropes or read up on it so i can sort myself out better. I am loving it though

Documentation is one of the poorest side of the game. There are no real guides besides the ones avaliable at the website, and they are not that good. I recommend you to take a look at the guilds in your server.
