If you can overlook the fact that your basically paying them for nothing (most of the game is client side, why it was so easy for people to hack, the world isn't perssistant, gameplay ranges from acceptable to overly laggy despite your connection, etc) then at best its mediocre. It's good for something thats a bit diffrent, but either way, it lacks alot of features that would have been easy too add and could have pushed it up into the ranks of "great games", pay to play or otherwise.
My biggest problem was that i loved the idea behind the game, but the entire game feels like one big dissapointment; There is so much potential to that game that will never be met because Sega just doesn't care..at all. The japanese are content with it, so thats the end of discussion to them. Being the only Online rpg with an active, action based battle system, this game could have been huge internationally. Yet Sega proves time and time again that they arn't intrested at all in what international gamers want, and thier long list of failures from the death of the dreamcast till now shows it.
Had they taken the time to add a nice pvp system (player vs player), this game would easily be a smash hit, because it offer something unique no other game did, and would be extremely fun (the last phantasy star game, blue burst, had PvP, and although it was quite half assed, it was still alot of fun.) But once again, Japanese gamers arn't all that intrested in PvP, so they left it out, even though the majority of the rest of the world has atleast a passive intrest in it.
Basically take a great idea, combine it with Japanese arrogance, and you get PSU. Its bursting at the seams with potential, but it will never meet that potential because at some point, Sega just stuck thier nose up in the air and stopped admitting that American/European gamers have diffrent tastes in games, and expect diffrent things from a game, particularly one that charges you every month.
Just imagining a lineage 2 siege scale battle in PSU makes me drool, but the Japanese arn't intrested in that, so we will never see that. Sad part is, its not just PSU, its Sega as a whole. All of thier games lately have been trashy, and just don't stand up to the level of quality expected anymore. I loved Sega back in the old Genesis days, and even as recently as the Dreamcast days, but lately..they just lost thier touch, and whats more is that most of thier international fans are willing to help them out, and will tell them whats wrong with thier games, and how to improve them, but they are so arrogant that they never listen. Soon Sega won't have any internation fans left.
Its not a bad game, but what is going to piss you off more than anything is that they could have done so much more with PSU, but didn't. It's not that they set thier bar of quality low, its just that to them, if thier Japanese customers are happy, to hell with everyone else. Thats why it took them so long to even half assed deal with hackers, because on the Japanese servers, no one was "dishonorable" enough to cheat or damage other players rooms. The entire company reeks of arrogance, and im partially happy that they are failing and losing ground constantly, because with the attitudes they have now, they don't deserve to stand with companys that actually care about what ALL of thier customers want, not just the ones in the country local to them.
I hate to say it, but with the attitude they have now, they should have just died a long time ago and left us with our fond memories of days past; A giant fallen, thats the story of Sega..but they didn't fall because they wern't willing to make good games, they fell because they stopped caring. Nintendo was on the fringe for awhile, but atleast they realised thier mistake and made a come back. Sega is just dragging out the inevitable, sooner or later they are going to blink out of existance, and they deserve to go under after how pompous they have been acting.
