Greatest Game of All Time?

My vote would probably be cast for Fallout 1 & 2.

I say 1 & 2, because they are basically the same game. No total re-work needed. A few little tweaks here and there and basically the same game, but much longer and much more in depth.

The game is just down right amazing. I found the game in Walmart for $10 for both. Never heard of it before, but it looked cool. I installed it, got pissed off at the combat and quit for about a year. One day internet was down, so I was looking for something to do... "wth, I'll try this game again" that game was Fallout 1......... omg it was brilliance from the beginning. I screwed up the first time and played Fallout 2 and pissed off those guys in that town where you need to shut down the generator. So, going through there was absolute hell and I thought the game was junk for a long time.

Anyway, what's your vote?

I'm the only "real" gamer that I know who has never played fallout.

I think that if I had to pick the game that I enjoyed more than any other game...I would have to say probably Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas.  When I played it there was just such a feeling of completeness to the game, I couldn't think of anything that I wished was different...that's very rare.

I would put Starcraft, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Metal Gear Solid in the same category though, all truly amazing games.

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

I'd have to Tomb Raider. It's the one game that has succeded in putting action and adventure together to make somthing truley beautiful. Also starred a female which became one of the most famous female heroienes of the video game industry.  Not only that many of the games after that used it for reference.

Runners up is in my opinon: Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Grand Theft Auto 3 and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

The Runners up that people wouldn't agree opun is: Tenchu: Stealth Asassin, Mega Man Legends, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Twisted Metal 2, Spider-Man (PSX), and some others...

Fallout 2 is still the best game ive played by far, the atmosphere and characters you met in that game were pure gold, skill system was so good that it was a thrill to gain a level. I never really played Fallout 1, maybe i should pick it up...

Morrowind was good, Baldurs Gate 1was better (BG 2 not so much)... then there is lot of games that are older than most readers here

Is Fallout 2 kinda like Shadowrun for Genesis? I saw a game called Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. Is it worth picking up? I have never played Fallout before.

ive never played Shadowrun for Genesis, so cant say anything about that, but Brotherhood of Steel is something you should stay far far away from. It sucks.

The real Fallout games 1&2 are two games you should definetly look into (allthou, like i said i never played much Fallout 1).

EDIT: in short, Fallout is post-apocalyptic RPG.

EDIT2: for all Fallout fans, check out Conflict Omega. Its basicly Fallout MMORPG, allthou faaaar away from launch.

I think I'm the only one that will put a recent game in the list, but for me, its Gears of War.

Yeah Fallout is really something. I'm not sure how much I realised that at the time of playing, or because I have since kept finding myself thinking about it and the atmosphere and game mechanics. Morrowind would also have to be up there as one of my favourites; you could play that game for months and still have a way to go.

It all comes down to how one would measure the "greatest". If you break it down to componants, the way this site does to get its game ratings, I think you are already putting limits on how such things are judged (graphics and sound do not a great game make).

Probably, for me, the game that took most of my time up, that I spent hours thinking over and working out ways of improving my fighting, and spent more money on than any other game, was one that had no graphics at all. It's a text based MUD called Avalon (www.avalon-rpg.com anyone know it?). You need imagination, fast reading skills and to be able to program your macros, but the world created there and the options you have as a player make best current MMORPGs look as simple as Diablo. Fighting other players is outrageously complex, with more options for attacks and defences than you could ever hope to master. You can be involved in running cities (and even defining the political structure your city has) or marching armies to take over other cities. There was just so much this game got right, I've not really seen anything else that comes even close.

Damn I dont know where to start, I've been a gamer all my life and there's just so many...

Fallout 2 was brilliant, but as far as I can remember at this stage (im quite drunk atm) was Call of Duty 2 + expansion, playing on full surround sound and large monitor with top settings, I have never been so immersed, especially the Battle of Stalingard, I was so immersed. Hardcore is all I can say.

Greatest game just boils down to people's favourites. And I have so many. But to keep it easy, I'll name the first game which blew me away and that was Zelda.

Battlefield 1942 and the DC mod for it.

Nothing like it before it came out. Take a plan from your base and fly it over a vast empty mountain side. Parachute down with a sniper rifle and hide among the hills taking out enemies as the passed down below along a narrow road in an open jeep. Loved taking out the driver then picking off the passenger when the jeep rolled to a stop. Or doing the same thing but instead laying mines along the road then picking off the enemy as they stopped their jeep or tank short to avoid or get rid of the mines.

The above was on Gazala btw.

P.S. No Draenor, you're not the only game who never played Fallout... I didn't either!

Not at all. I think Gears of War is absolutely brilliant, especialy the co-op multiplayer through Xbox live is a blast to play.

    Command and Conquer

Brilliant story. Brilliant graphics/sound. Fantastic gameplay, perfecting the rts genre, with gameplay and game mechanics we see this very day. It's a revolution done right.... actually perfect in my opinion.

    God I love that...

I have to agree with Gameloading here. Although it's not my favourite game, it's definitely a runner up.

I think mine is Grand Theft Auto, or Metal Gear Solid. I'm not quite sure.

My favourite not-so-mainstream game is Jagged Alliance 2. What a great game that was.

Don't forget the FMVs of Emperor: Battle for Dune! I think it was the world's first 3D strategy game, as well. The AI was lackluster, but I still liked it.

Civilization. It was the first game i ever played. And probably one of the most well developed.

Good call. Almost forgot about it! I saw it in a magazine and the crude graphics of Civilization 2 intrigued me. I bought it, it seemed fantastic.

    It did not disappoint.

It seems earlier Game deisgners were way more original in the developing of their games than now. Mostly nowadays, new games are just a complete copy of the last game in their series, with better graphics (take Heroes of Might & Magic V as an example).

edit: i'd like to take most back of what i just said. More properly phrased, what i wanted to say is that games nowadays are less innovative than before, but are still fun to play :)

Something is wrong with that game. I love HoMM1-3, skipped 4, but 5? Wtf? It takes the computer over an hour to finish it's turn!
