In Wow raiding Shadow priests are rarely wanted. Maybe that changes with TBC. I don't really know or care. But, their class has the best healing in the game thus most guilds want them specialized that way. Yes other classes can heal but not nearly as good. Druids are the closest in power but lack for ways of shedding aggro that the priest has.
A Discipline heavy healer with some holy makes the best WoW healer or it did back when I played it. My point is that in VG, you have 4 classes that can heal equally as good without making them pick healing over offense. You can get both and you aren't the only class that has the best heals. Also, the way the classes go about it are unique to the game and to other games. I don't think I've played a Disciple type character in other MMO's before.
I've only recently started playing WoW again after two years (I originally quit after the free month, and I just reactivated a couple of days ago with one of those prepaid cards just to see how things have changed since then, and to try out TBC), so I really don't have much to go on except the class guides I've read, my experiences as a Priest back then, and my impression of how the class is designed.
Sure, a Shadow priest isn't really wanted in a raid. That's because in a raid, a Priest is wanted for one thing, and one thing only-- raw healing power. But for me, the fact that people can make a Priest and and take them through with Shadow and a helping of Discipline on the side (or hell, vice versa), and solo them somewhat effectively shows me that the class is far stronger than just being a healbot.
It's entirely possible to solo a Priest up to raiding levels, then spec over if you want that. Me personally, I've never really gone for raiding, so if I re-roll one, I'd probably go away from raw healing to a more melee support/backup damage dealer role. That's more my style, and always has been.

Nice post. Also, for PvP the Shadow Priest is one of the top dogs. I will give Blizzard credit in that they didn't make the Priest a complete heal bot. If raiding isn't your thing, the WoW priest is fun to play.
