What style do you like in MMOG Graphics. (poll)

was curious and the other thread didnt mention the third.

cell shading = a few mmos have this, seed for one. jet set/jet grind radio if you have ever played it. zelda: windwaker.

Cartoon = rose, World of Warcraft, scions of fate.

realism = does not have to be super killing graphics, Asherons call, dark age of camelot, everquest 2, vanguard, the matrix online would fall under these categories

There should have been an 'ALL' option which would have made my life much easier.

    This is not a game.

A few examples would be nice too... Im not sure what cell shading is (Ill have to get off my lazy ass and Google it)  and Im not sure what cartoony graphics are, a lot of people consider WoW to have cartooney graphics, I dont. This kind of vagueness will completely distord results of this vote.

How many mmo's does have cell shading? Only remember one game that had that, Seed.
  • kordrialkordrial Member Posts: 160
i don't know of any MMO's that have cell shading, however, when the co. goes for realism, the req specs are usually HUGE, and i dislike cartoony gphx like WoW. so cell shading seems like a happy medium.

    WoW, WAR=Cartoon

    Vanguard, Guild Wars =realism

graphics don't matter to me as long as they convey the point.(yes they do matter a little bit, but its not an issue unless i'd rather play the text version of your game over the graphical version)

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

duno... DAOC graphics look very similar to WoW graphics to me. When you say catrooney, do u mean the art or how it is drawn on the monitor?

It doesnt. That was the point of my question, DAOC does not look cartooney to me. DAOC looks similar to WoW imo. So how can WoW be cartooney? Both WoW and DAOC have a very good fantasy-style artistic graphics. They are not cartooney like flyff  or rose.

Cel shading is more of a way of rendering than a style.

    But anyway

It is going to be used in MMO called "Viki" - which is rip of Zeldas windwalker graphic

Cel shading is rendering used to emulate look if comic book - good example is PC game called "XIII" based on a comic of same name

    Where is 2D?

I've had a better experience with 2D mmo's, than most 3D... simply because in 2D, you can have a better artistic way of style...

Games like Helbreath and Ragnarok online, have a very cool style of graphic... Even though it is getting outdated, i still think it looks better than EQ2, WoW or DDO... Just to name a few.

The thing that is good about 3D, is that you suddenly have a way of putting in other features... but that is another story...

I like realism over all others. However realistic looking graphics doesn't impress when it lags and stutters along. Give me a gorgeous looking MMO that runs at a high constant bit rate and I'm happy. As for Cartoony, I don't mind it, it has it's place. As for cell shading the only MMO I herd of that was cell shaded was SEED. I wouldn't mind seeing more cell shaded games if it was done right. I liked the comic book like style of the game XII.

Monato Esprit is one MMO that i know uses cel-shading.

    This is not a game.

; Eetherean, sorry m8, dont realy see much similarities between Rose grafix and WoW. WoW may be closer to Rose then to EQ2, but i think it is because artistic style is more fantasy then medieval. But fantasy style is not cartoon style.

@ Montaronx, the only game that challenges EQ2 graphics IMO is VSoH. Absolutely stunning graphics, both from technical and artistic standpoints.

I like any non-asian graphics. What's up with all these slim gay looking characters in asian games I do not understand.

I really have no idea why people keep saying EQ2 and Vanguard are realistic graphics.  They are just not done right to be realistic, and alot of the actual assets are placed in the world without thought of how they should be placed there adding into the fake factor.  In the end it always looks like clay cause they don't hit the fundamentals of achieving realistic graphics.  Dirt, Noise, Subtle Spec Maps, Low-saturated colors, and photo-reference.  They really only hit 1 of the things they should, the reference.  In both games there are only a handful of vistas that accomplish what is meant by realistic graphics.  Even Guild Wars which is stylized has more realistic Vistas on a far less advanced engine.  If you want a real contender for realistic graphics in an MMO, its Dungeons and Dragons.  It might be overly brown and desaturated; but thats what realistic graphics look like.

Also I think he shoulda polled it Cell Shaded/Cartoony, Stylized, and Realistic since Cell-Shaded and Cartoony look pretty much the same while Stylized encompasses the gap between realistic and Cartoony while trying the benefit from the aesthetics of Cartoony but the detail of realism.  Usually Stylized Graphics are the most popular like in Guild Wars, Lineage II, and Final Fantasy XI.

meh i hate the the cartoony graphics, it reminds me to much of the 90s, and that means the tecnology is going backwards. Realism is much better to look at, just going along and seeing nice landscape.

Well, imo the most important thing is that the game has a consistant style. Areas or characters should not look out of place in the game. A believable world and believable characters are important as well. Characters don't have to look realistic to be believable, but again, they do have to fit into the world.
For example, I'd prefer the characters from WoW over those in Vanguard or EQ2. In both Vanguard and EQ2 characters seem to move way too stiff and look like puppets, mainly because of the lack of textures in the face. If I have to choose between realistic and cartoony though, I'd choose cartoony as long as the style is still original. Something like ROSE looks way too generic, however I love this:

To me Graphics do not really matter...  Its all about the Game play and community...  Also the PVP! GATTA HAVE THE PVP!
  • indiindi Member UncommonPosts: 149

Environment: realistic and detailed, western style; like EQ2, Vanguard SoH

Character models and armor: colorful and rich textures, no plastic skin, fantasy or anime, eastern style; like Lineage 2, RFO or Zera Nexus (two ss for those who don't know the game, 2nd pic is Davidkim's mage):

Same. I don't really care on the style as long as it looks good and fits the game.

I ended up chosing realism but part of me hopes that it isn't realism like EQ II where everything is just damned boring. Hell, if cool looking armor sets are "cartoony" put me down for that.
