I have a SLI setup with 2 8800 GTXs. I login to EQ2, max group graphics settings and still get jitters. I login to VG at the end of beta with graphics settings maxed out... it ran smoothly.
Having a graphics engine pre-made does help gameplay in this case. Having a stable graphics engine does wonders for smooth play and it also allows the developers to work on the GAME and not focus on graphics development.
Having a known "good" graphics engine is a good thing.

as far as i am aware, the Unreal 3 engine's purpose right now is making insane visual games, not games that ALSO runs smoothly(i ofcourse dont know about that..).
