Has CoH gotten any substance to it yet?

last time i played all the rewards were fluff based.  Like being able to wear a cape, have a badge, or a title, but nothing that really amounted to more than dress up Barbie type of rewards that did absolutely nothing but made you special from other players in appearance alone.  It was the maiin reason i quit.  There was only so much of the gameplay which was fun at first that i could take before looking for other aspects to entertain me and there really wasnt anything else there.

so has CoH changed or is it still a very shallow superficial game?

The awards are still the same, getting badges and rewards for getting cetain levels.

I like the game though, the most fun MMORPG I've played in quite a while.

I'm confused.....you liked the gameplay but wanted more than just fluff?  I think you may not understand CoH.  First of all I think I can speak for every CoH subscriber by saying that we are happy with getting capes, veteran awards, badges, etc.  Why are we happy with this?  Because there isn't any ridiculous uber loot to worry about.  Everything we gain is just for fun and not as a status symbol.  If you want status or to show off then go to a loot based game.  CoH is about being a superhero with powers.  Superheroes don't worry about anything but stopping criminals and that is what this game is about.  The gameplay suits CoH just fine and while it isn't perfect (lots of grinding) things are looking up for the game.  Heroes now have safeguard missions (stopping bank robberies etc) and that has already brought a lot of people back.  If you want to be an uber l33t toon then this just isn't the game for you, but if you just want to have some fun with a smaller but solid community where you can do everything from teleporting to raining down fire on villians then come on in.  This game IS getting better and from what I can tell, is getting new people everyday.  My 2 cents.

This game is not about loot at all.

It is just action rpg. And it is all about combat. Nothing more nothing less.

It is still one of the most fun mmos around

I think it makes a nice change of pace to have an MMO that doesn't obsess on loot.

That is exactly its appeal to those who continue to play it.   Focusing on teaming and playing, and not having to worry about who has better equipment than you, and not having to constantly buy or acquire new things when the old ones break, 'grey-out', or become too low level.  So to the OP, it remains exactly as you remember it, if you're hoping to be 'rewarded' for playing.

Its why I quit EQ2, since I can't raid long evenings (I have a job), I realized I would never have the coolest stuff, no matter how hard I tried or how well I played.  I was locked out of that part of the game, through the design of the game and not through any fault of my own.  City of Heroes and City of Villains is definitely for players who don't need 'rewards' to keep playing.  We're not rats in a maze, running to that bit of cheese at the center.  Gameplaying is its own reward.
