All games have their fair share of good and bad apples. If people want to compare communities, I would like to remind that in a community 5 or 10 times bigger, you're bound to find 5 or 10 times more bad apples. But then again, you'll find the same percentage of good apples as well. It comes down at being biased towards the game itself that make people look at the bad aspects and ignore the good ones.
There is another thing. Some people are insecure. The need to be acknowledged as mature by their peers, the don't want to be ridiculed because they play a game, thus they put tags on games, categorising them in manly games or childish ones. There is alot of hate coming out of insecure people that feel the need to look down on WoW, so they don't have to feel childish for playing their, other, niche game. It seems both hilarious and sad.
For the people that play games as an escape of the harsh reality, such notions are silly. I care little whether a insecure youngster wishes to feel mature by looking down on WoW. All I want is to detach myself from the harsh reality for 30 minutes. WoW is good at this and that's all that matters.
I'm 25, everyone I know in RL that plays WoW is over 20, one guy is 41. There isn't anyone in my current guild that's under 18.
The "kiddie" MMO excuse is used by people who play inferior MMOs with a crap population in some desperate attempt to get more people to their game. Personally I found the EQ2 community to be more immature, EVE online has plenty of "l33t" pirates who pod just to spite you and that's one of the better games for community.
But hey, people love to hate the popular MMO don't they? They don't realize that a lot of WoW players HAVE played the other MMOs, I played EQ1 for 5 years, and I chose WoW, because it's the best game out there by a long way.
I played WoW for a good year, and it is full of kids.
Originally posted by baff WoW is has no different a cross section of age groups than any other pay to play.
But the "decency" of the community differs strongly.
WoW is a fast-paced game which is seen messy and easy, that way the game makes the people. Energic, and annoying people everywhere. That's how it is and that's why the community sucks.
Not at all, all the wankers play pvp games.
Wow players tend be helpful and polite if possible. (Most players in most games do).
Try the community at counterstrike for exampleof indecent. Or Wolfenstein Enemy Teritory. More kids because it's free and more argumentative taunty types.
Wow is fast paced?
I think I recommend you play Eve. Although the communtiy there is not so nice. Lots of elitist types and griefers are encouraged by the game system. More elitist types can be found playing Matrix (I'm a role player from Beta!), more PvP tossers over at Planetside (I owned joo in this conversation i can own joo in ebery aspect of life).
Wow has a good mix of girls and boys of all ages from children to grandparents. All the usual stereotypes can be found if you want to focus oin the idiots, but they hardly dominate the game. It's very rare that i add someone to my ignore list, or make a mental note not to play with someone again.

Just stop ignoring general or the LFG channel.
