Man back after a long way away....but anyways.
Im in college algebra now, and NO ONE in my family will help me. I need help guys....is anyone remotly good at math? Its only the first week and Im already lost. I have this problem where she'll be talking and ill be staring at her but I can't remember anything she says after the class is over....its very annoying. And now Im stuck here with my first homework assignment due Weds and I dont know how to do it. If anyone could help at all it would be much apperciated. I can post the equations or w/e word problems and stuff on here if anyone is willing to help me.
I beg of anyone who knows a little math. Please send your help (means responding).

Ok here we go...Please show most work you can so i can learn and not just copy.
Find all values of x such that y=0.
y=5[x-(3-x)]-9(x+1)
x=?

Ok, lets set Y=0
So, 0=5[x-(3-x)]-9(x+1). Now, to the simplifying.
0=5[2x-3]-(9x+9)
0=10x-15-9x-9 Combine like terms.
0= x-24
x=24
Are you sure this is Collegiate level math? Or am I missing something?

Mith got it right, so that's not needed. Good luck on the rest.
And I know what I did wrong, forgot it was a (-) in part. Damn you tiny print signs!
Mith got it.
Oh and to the OP, E =/= MC^2. COurse we don't know what the equation is, but we know it isn't what Albert thought it was. String theory is the current favorite, but like most things we know today expect it to be proved wrong in the fairly short future.
You said that by the end of class you have forgotten much of what she has said...I would suggest that you start taking lots of notes, and be sure to work out the practice problems that she puts up on the board for yourself. That way you'll have all of the work on your paper and when you go back to look at it while you study you'll be able to recall it in your head better because you'll have actually done the problem, rather than just copy it directly from the board.
I struggle with math as well, my mind is much more geared towards English and critical thinking than it is to linear equations...curiously though, I've always been better at word problems than most of my math loving friends.

Yea this is college math....its only the first week....review and stuff. But because I never had a good math foudation this is not review for me. Thanks for the help and all the adivise....Ill be back with more probs for you guys....Ima try and stump you....youll see.

This is college math? i remember doing this in 8/9th grade..
1:st chapter of my college math course was repetition of algebra and derivations from last part of high-school math.
On this 3rd math course we have started on "binomial equations" & "partial integrals". My tip to OP is to learn algebra like the back of your hand ,seriously without it you will fail.

Frank Zappa was the greatest man who ever lived and his music is amazing also.
I can help you with math any time you like. I've tutored math and the sciences, i also have taught the MCAT for Kaplan, so feel free to send over an email anytime you need help, of course a few days before a test would be helpful. My dad has a Ph.D. in math so if i didn't do well in math, my ass was going to get owned.
The secret about problems like this is that you have to simplify the addition and subtraction parts of the equation first.
y=5[x-(3-x)]-9(x+1)
so if we take [x - (3-x)] and we isolate it and simplify the subtraction portion we get:
x - 3 - (-x)
we know if we get - (- x) it just becomes positive, so we end up with 2x - 3. Then we multiply the 5 through and we get 10x -15.
now go to the other portion it is -9(x+1). There's no sub/add issue to simplify so we just multiply through.
we get - 9x - 9.
Now we combine both subsets of the equation on the right and we get.
10x-15 and -9x - 9 so we put it together and we get 10x -15 - 9x - 9. Now sub/add whatever is the same, as in10 - 9x and -15 - 9
those become: 1x + 6
So we have Y = 1x - 24.
Then it says, what is X if Y = 0.
So now put Y as 0 and you get.
0 = 1x - 24.
So now the question becomes what does X have to be so that 1(x) - 24 will equal zero. In this case it's pretty easy, it's just 24.
But in algebra you can change an equation by adding to both sides of the equation or subtracting or multiplying or dividing.
Therefore. let's add 24 to both sides to eliminate the (-24) on one side and thus leave us with an equation that has 2 integers on one side.
Thus 24 = 1x
Therefore x = 24.
Therefore in a problem like this. You must.
1. Simplify the addition/subtraction subsets so it is easy to multiply/divide them
2. then apply multiplication and/or division and get an equation that only deals with addition/subtraction
3. Then simplify as much as you can.
4. Then isolate the X so it is only one side.
For example if you have:
2x + 4 = 3
You can subtract 4 from each side, "2x +4 (-4) = 3 (-4) and you end up with 2x = -1. At this stage you want to isolate X even more so you divide both sides by 2 and you get x = -1/2.
At 2x + 4 = 3 , your first priority is to isolate X even if it has a coefficient. If you try to divide by 2 at this stage you'll just over complicate the problem, but i'll prove it to you.
(2x+4)/2 = 3/2
thus x + 2 = 1.5 then you can subtract 2 from both sides and you get negative .5 but usually it's easier to take care of the addition/subtraction first.
I'll give you a practice problem but instead of using X and Y, i'll use WoW and EVE .
EVE = 3(WoW) + 2[3(WoW) - (- WoW -1)] + [WoW -(4 - WoW)]/2
If EVE = 10, then what does WoW equal?

Yea Ima try and learn it like the back of my hand. And why cant I use this site and forum for some help every once in a while? If you dont want to participate in the group learning expreiance then dont. But see I got no one else to help me. But I thank the people who did help.
Yea this is the first chapter, but like I said I never even got the first chapter in High school....so i know none of this.
