Needles to say that stratics is owned by IGE, along with all the other mmorpg sitespopular sites, including mmorpg.com.
They wont necessarily give a mmorpg a bad review, especially one where they plan to sell gold, items and account to players.
Actually, IGE are boycotting Vanguard on their owned sites due to Sigil's stance on gold farming... so I'd say this is a pretty glowing review coming from them of all people!no game supports gold farming so dont make that somehow a sigil crusade
Actually, SOE (Vanguard's publisher) does support gold farming. If you didn't know, they were the first major MMO producer to actually set up a "legal" way for their customers to buy and sell in-game characters, cash and items. See EQ2 Exchange if you don't know what I'm talking about it. What they don't support is competition from people that don't share the profit with them.
Anyhow, that is just an aside.
I found the review extremely optimistic, having actually played Vanguard, I can't say that it is a train wreck, but it is certainly far from a 9/10. For example, it's graphics, including models and animations are so outdated that they border on insulting. The game world itself looks great though and makes up for it somewhat.
The adventure gameplay is pretty much the same as is already available in current games like EQ2, CoH and WoW. The designer's refusal to use instancing techonology has come back to bite them in the ass, since their replacement for it (a mob-instancing system as opposed to zone-instancing) is not ready at launch and people are stuck camping a newbie quest mob for what could be hours shortly after starting the game (at least at the location I started). The lack of instancing adds nothing to the immersion, the one dungeon that I had visited would have been exactly the same in it's own zone as it is when you run through it's gates. And even though there is no loading screen, the game still freezes while you wait to zone over to the next "chunk" of the world. There are several other archaic notions in the game that the designers seem to have brought over due to their nostalgia for the original Everquest. While I did hear several people say things like "yay! the grind is back!" and "I love dying 5 times trying to get to my corpse naked!", I believe those to be the sentiments of the minority.
On the other hand, diplomacy is excellent and ready for launch. I am not sure how (or if) if works at higher levels, but there is definitely enough to get you started having fun.
I didn't try crafting.
I would give vanguard an 8 out of 10 maybe 3 years ago if it had come out at the same time as EQ2 and WoW. By today, it should have learned more from those 2 games. Today it's a 6 or maybe a 7 if things improve significantly at high level. One day it might become an 8, but by that day there will be new standards to measure up to.
Awesome, someone else brings their mighty post count to 4 to flame. Secondly, you can recall your corpse at the altar you spawn at when you die, it just costs your equipment some durability. And I am glad you decided not to try crafting since it probably would have been to much for you to handle in the hour you played the game. The models and animations were enchanced a lot in the last few days of the beta.
Wll apparently Sigil have done something right, perhaps they ought to call the Blizzard team and tell them how to stop professional gold farmers, because Blizzard don't seem to have a clue.
Having played in the Closed Beta, Vanguard does have promise but there is a lot of work required, not least the speed with which solo levelling turns from easy (noob zone) to needing groups (level 7 - 8 upwards). Not for casual players who don't guild/group up.
I don't think gold farming can be stopped. The only thing a farmer has to do in game is grind gold somehow which everyone has to do in some form or another, and trade the gold to a person who bought it from ebay or their website. A game company obviously can't police every gold trade in game and look for suspicious activity, so it only leaves one option. The company themselves have to buy gold from the farmers, and try to trace down where it comes from when they are contacted in game by the farmers character. The problem with that is your just swatting flies. You are not preventing them from making more accounts, and farming more gold, plus, I don't think they would be able to get their money back from the initial gold purchase without legal issues. In essence, they would have to spend money every time they wanted to shut down a single gold farmer account.
Farming. Dimishing returns on gold dropped by mobs within an area within a certain redius maybe. So camping one spot and grinding mobs would eventually wield no loot after X hours. This would allow other players to access the mobs and mean the farmers would have to travel to other areas regularly to get loot.
However it couldnt be for all players in the area, (as then non-farmers would get nothing), just the ones getting the loot, so i guess the farmers could just rotate people over few hours .
Dam it was a good idea for all of the 20 secs it took to type it rofl.
Nice that a good review comes out and every single troll of the game chimes in in one thread. I'm going to go read it now, continue the sour grapes bitchfest.
Oh and Vanguard is really a great game, give it a try for yourself. Bring extra ram.
Many fans of the game have dissed the review too. A review HAS to, at all times, be unbiased , mentioning both the flaws and good points, without heaping too much focus on either of them.
That review was not only biased, but it blew even the most trvial of good points way out of proportion, often stating personal opinion (like he has any playtime to go off of) as fact, i.e. "This game is totally complete!".
If he didn't give every section 10/10, then he needs to explain why, using examples and reasoning, not just go "Best MMO ever! 9/10!...oh...sound is 7/10".
I'll base my score on how well i can play it and successfully chat in local whilst being drunk at the weekends. Important factors here are UI/chat interface.
Eh, having to pay to play a game like Vanguard would indeed force someone to drink...
to me it all came down to, i dont hate myself enough to play vanguard, lol...

Who cares if what some crackpot website gave the game a 9/10. It makes as much a difference as if Blizzard released a review saying go play Vanguard, we're crap. If i enjoy the game, I'm going to play it. And I really enjoyed Vanguard.
