Whats in a name?

wolffinwolffin Member UncommonPosts: 193

So many WoW haters have said numerous times that the reason for WoW's success is because of the warcraft name and not because its a quality game.

My only question is if that were true and a name could work such wonders why isn't a game like DDO as popular as WoW?

I mean D&D has millions of fans from what more than 3 decades?

What makes WoW a huge success and DDO barely worth mentioning?

Play the game. Experience the economy vs. some of the other MMO's out there.  I don't give a flying, flippin' monkey wrench about the average age of the gamer.  Who cares!  Most of my guildies are in their 20's and 30's.  It's the fun that matters to me.  I play MMO's for the "escape" value, the ease of movement between areas, the companionship of others, and the FUN, damnit!  WoW  is successful not because of the name, but because people tried it out and stayed.  They got hooked.  Blizzard has designed a very good game no matter what certain people may think.

No one plays DDO cause Turbine made it.  Everything thing they get there hands on fail miserably and gets shut down in a couple of years.  I bet if a different company made it, it would have been alot better.   In my opinion the name doesn't really have any merit on how popular it's going to be.

I'm one of the people that played WoW and never stayed and won't be buying the expansion, not cause I think the game sucks, cause it doesn't.  I was actually pleasently surprised by the actual game, but being a verteran mmo player for the past decade I've pretty much become bored with all of them.  The biggest issue I had with WoW is it's quest system.  very bland and boring in my opinion.  Everything else in the game is very well done, and I can see why so many people play it.

Blizzard did a good job in marketing WoW to the masses.  Just about everyone that I talk to in my game store that plays it, has never played any other mmo before.  WoW is the very first game of it's kind that they have ever played.  Blizzard and WoW brought millions of people into the genre that never was there before.  WoW is easilly accessable and easy to pick up and play.

So, to your question.  I think the name has some merit in a products sales, but at the end of the day, it's all about the quality of the product itself that makes people stay for the long term.  The name will bring people in, but it's the game itself that makes them stay.
